A widely-collected, self-taught artist, Clifford T. Bailey, joins the art scene again in Colorado Springs with the “Best of Bailey”. Twenty years have passed since he exhibited at Mike Ament’s gallery and held a prominent position in Colorado Springs. After Ament’s gallery
closed, Bailey decided to sell his work closer to home in Greeley and in several out-of-state galleries where he has enjoyed an enviable following. Because he paints daily to satisfy his followers’ thirst for his art, Bailey frequently looks for inspiration near home where he is
surrounded by hundreds of acres of grazed pasture bordering the Platte River with Long's Peak in the background. Anyone familiar with Bailey's paintings quickly recognizes the view that often appears in his traditional landscapes. These pastures have provided Bailey with an endless source of material over the years. He constantly observes changes to Long's Peak and the other Front Range mountains in all seasons, weather and times of day for their atmospheric conditions and moody presence.
The “Best of Bailey” collection now shown at Hunter-Wolff Gallery features a variety of sizes and subject matter in oil on canvas, smaller studio paintings and larger masterpieces which reflect his ability to capture a hint of misty fog settling over a light-filled and shadowy landscape. Gallery Owner Sharon Wolff says, “What distinguishes Bailey from many other artists is his sense of light and dark. Strong contrast between light and dark is essential for impact and for setting a mood. Conceptually, artists understand the importance of contrast but mastering it takes a keen eye and expert skill. Regardless of how skilled an artist is at the other elements of painting, creating lights that are “kind of light” and darks that are “kind of dark”, often results in mediocre or boring work.” Bailey is well-known for his Old Master’s style and technique with its intensity of dark and light tones and subject matter such as perfectly rendered fruits and flower blossoms at
their peak. These are often rendered in brilliant, true colors with subtle reflections on a black tabletop with realistic droplets of water. Each is a careful study not only of the objects painted, but also of the technique and art of applying oil paint to canvas.
“I have been painting since I was 19 years old and am very excited to be at Hunter- Wolff Gallery in a community where fine art is valued. Sharon Wolff and her staff share my enthusiasm and bring a level of expertise I am delighted to find in Colorado Springs. Hunter- Wolff Gallery offers an impressive collection of art by some of today’s top award-winning artists. I am honored to be among them,” said Bailey.
