The FCC Concert Series is presenting Abendmusik, a chamber choir directed by Rob Ryder. The program “And This is Love” explores musical expressions of the various dimensions of love – emotional, spiritual, relational and romantic - and features works by notable composers of the last century such as Samuel Barber, Carl Orff, Stephen Paulus and C.H.H. Parry. The program culminates with two iconic pieces heard by millions during last spring’s royal wedding. The choir will be accompanied by organ, harp, flutes, recorder and percussion. Come for a light-hearted afternoon rich in beauty and feeling. A free will offering will be taken.

Abendmusik is an auditioned community choir founded in 1974. Originally formed as an in service performing group for music educators from School District 11, the choir now consists of accomplished singers and musicians from all walks of life. Many charter members of the group remain as members today. Membership includes singers who range in age from early 20s to mid 80s, and all share a common love of performing choral music and creating musical experiences for audiences throughout the region. The group has been featured in performance for the Colorado Music Educators Conference on multiple occasions, most recently in January, 2011, and has performed and toured with the United States Air Force Academy Band. Recently Abendmusik has made guest appearances with the Arapahoe Philharmonic in Denver and with the Pueblo Symphony. Abendmusik’s local concerts are always open and free to the public.

Rob Ryder received his B.A. degree in Music Theory and Composition from Stanford University, where he studied with Leland Smith and John Chowning. His graduate studies in Music were at Colorado College where he studied with Don Jenkins. He taught vocal music in the Colorado Springs public schools for six years. Rob’s compositions and arrangements have been performed by numerous community, university, military, church, and school groups throughout the country. He is a past winner of the Colorado Music Educators Association award for composition, and has been a featured composer for the Colorado All-State Choir and the Colorado Vocal Arts Ensemble. Rob has been a member of Abendmusik since the group’s inception in 1974, and has served as co-director of the choir since 2001. In addition to his musical pursuits, he pursues a full-time career as CEO of St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo, Colorado.

Featured selection on the program will include: And This Is Love by Bob Kauflin; Ave Verum by Philip Stopford; Welcome All Wonders by Stephen Paulus; Oculus non vidit by Rihards Dubra; Rytmus by Ivan Hrusovsky; Agnus Dei by Samuel Barber; A Mighty Fortress is Our God arr. Bob Kauflin; Goodnight My Angel by Billy Joel, arr. Lawson; Role Model by Rob Ryder; Dulaman by Michael McGlynn; In Trutina (from Carmina Burana) by Carl Orff, arr.
