Prior to the widespread use of cameras, naturalists trained as artists to hone observational skills and facilitate the accurate recording of data. Artists also frequently accompanied scientific explorations (Two artists joined Darwin's exploration of the Galapagos Islands.) Although the roles of artist and naturalist have diverged in the modern era, the practices contine to inform each other in significant ways. In this IDEA Cabaret presentation, Assistant Professor of History Jane Murphy and Assistant Professor of Philosophy Marion Hourdequin will explore the historical and philosophic intersections of art and natural science.
