The Britten Serenade for tenor voice, horn and piano was composed during World War II (1943) at the request of the horn player Dennis Brain. It is a setting of a selection of six poems by British poets on the subject of night, including both its calm and its sinister aspects.

The Lennox Berkeley Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano was written in 1952. Berkeley was a good friends with Britten, and studied Ravel. Once one of the most popular horn trios, the Berkeley deserves more performances and Classically Alive is glad to do so.

The program rounds out with the Myra Hess piano transcription of Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. Pianist Dame Myra Hess garnered special fame during World War II when, with all concert halls blacked out at night to avoid being targets of German bombers, she organized what would turn out to be some 1700 lunchtime concerts spanning a period of six years. The concerts were held at the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square; Hess herself played in 150 of them. For this contribution to maintaining the morale of the populace of London, King George VI awarded her with the Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE) in 1941; having previously been created a CBE in 1936.
