Thin Air Jazz Concert
January 15, 2012
Add Review/Comment
Thin Air Jazz plays a mixture of original compositions and arrangements made popular by the great big bands that came before it. Audiences are treated to music from the Basie Band, Woody Herman's Band, Buddy Rich's Band and Maynard Ferguson's bebop band of the ‘50s and ‘60s.
Thin Air Jazz is a 12-piece big band led by composer/arranger/valvetrombonist Phil Allen, who is joined by some of the finest musicians in southern Colorado. Butch Eversole, Brad Eastin, Dennis Hoshijo, and Chris Wojtecki make up the saxophone section. The brass section is Scott Crump on trombone, as well as Bud Gordon, Bob Rheam, and Mark Raphael on trumpet and flugelhorn. The rhythm section--Tom Taylor (leader of the Needlewood Orchestra) on guitar; Jay Hahn, electric bass; and Michael Woods on drums--provides the perfect foundation for soloists as well as full-band ensemble sections. Each member of the band is a gifted jazz soloist and is given several opportunities to be heard. The combination of great jazz solos and great ensemble playing by the band makes every performance by Thin Air Jazz a unique jazz listening experience.
