A contemporary travelogue with historical story-telling of five historic forts of the U.S. Southwest. Through historical and contemporary photographs Phil McDonald will examine the missions and personalities of Old Bent’s Fort and Fort Garland in Colorado, Forts Union and Craig in New Mexico and Fort Verde in Arizona. He will discuss their histories, introduce larger-than-life personalities such as Kit Carson, the Bent Brothers, Henry Hopkins Sibley and James Carlton and explore the lifestyles and daily routines of the men (and women) stationed at these isolated outposts.

Phil received his B.A. and M.S.E. degrees from Drake University and retired after a 30-year career teaching government, U.S. history and psychology. He is an instructor for PILLAR and as a Historical Society member, enjoys portraying historical characters each year at the Society’s Cemetery Crawl.
