    The Confluence String Quartet performs for their third year in a row at Classically Alive.

    The program features Tchaikovsky Quartet No. 1 in D Major. At the time of its composition, Tchaikovsky was comfortably settled in Moscow and gaining international fame as a composer, and his first string quartet conveys little of the anguish and depression so often associated with the composer and his music. The quartet abounds in simple and beautiful melodies, with graceful, balletic lilts. Even its tumultuous passages convey more celebration than angst. The great Russian Romantic master has long been a favorite among classical audiences, and his beautiful quartet consistently delights audiences.

    The program also includes Haydn Quartet Opus, 76 # 3 (“Emperor”). Haydn wrote 67 string quartets, and is regarded as master and father of the quartet. The Opus 76 quartets are of his late period and considered among Haydn’s finest works. Written in 1797 and dedicated to the Hungarian Count Joseph Erdödy, they showcase Haydn’s gift for beautiful melodies, sparkling wit, and ingenious interplay between the four instruments. The third quartet of the set bears the nickname “Emperor” because its second movement quotes Haydn’s song “God Save Emperor Francis,” a melody now well known as Germany’s national anthem.

    Rounding out this varied program is Leos Janacek Quartet No. 2 (“Intimate Letters”). Janacek is a very highly regarded Czech composer from the turn of the 20th century. His musical style is a mixture of lyricism, Eastern Europe folk elements, highly dramatic at times, and with currents of both the romantic and modern. In 1917, Janácek met Kamila Stösslová. He was 62, she was 26, and both were married. He fell in love, and during his remaining eleven years he wrote more than 700 letters to her. Their relationship was apparently never physically consummated, but she accepted his declerations of love and fantasies of their marrying and her bearing his children. His feelings for her found expression in his second string quartet, which he subtitled “Intimate Letters.” It was one of his last completed compositions; in fact, he did not live to hear the premiere performance. It graphically recounts a passionate and obsessive love. Quartet No. 2 (“Intimate Letters”) was written in 1928, the last year of Janacek’s life.
