Beauty and the Beast, A Celebration of the First Simpich Show

For its summer performance season, the Simpich Showcase Marionette Theatre will present a unique retelling of a classic fairy tale: Beauty and the Beast, A Celebration of the First Simpich Show.

Puppeteer David Simpich initially designed and performed this story in the mid 1980’s while living in Seattle. He and his wife, Debby, then presented the show in Washington State and Colorado into the early 1990’s. “This project was what led me into the art of puppetry nearly thirty years ago. In reviving it for our theatre, I decided to present the story on two levels: my original pre-Disney adaptation based on the old French fairy tale; and the unique set of circumstances that impelled me to venture in and commit completely to this theatre medium. As the fairy tale unfolds onstage, I also take the audience back to my early years of experimentation; the difficulties of building the characters, designing a portable stage; and my gamble and hunch that clay and cloth string puppets might really ‘have what it takes’ to perform as effective and affecting actors.” Simpich dialogues with the story’s heroine, Beauty, as they each must venture forth to confront their own “Beasts.” “So many things fed my insecurities as I was first starting out,” says Simpich, “it’s amazing this show was ever realized.” David has gone on to design fifteen more marionette productions, each taking nearly a year to develop. “Beauty and the Beast will always hold a special place in my repertoire. To this day, the building process is still palpable to me. Now that story is part of what happens on stage.”

The production includes his complete original cast of marionettes and settings restrung and reworked for this solo theatre piece.
