If you long for the good old days, those seemingly bygone days when your community could get together over pie and ice cream and celebrate the long and lazy days of summer, then long no more.

The Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce presents the 6th annual Pie Baking Contest and the 12th annual Ice Cream Social held in Soda Springs Park from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Little London winds will perform at the park as they have every Monday this summer, but this time you'll be able to eat pie and ice cream and talk to your Manitoid neighbors.

Contact the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce at 719-685-5089 for contest rules and entry information if you fancy yourself a pie baker and would like to participate.

Buy some juicy Colorado Grown Melons while listening to the musical stylings of Dakota Blonde.

The Gettin' Down, Downtown summer concert sponsored by Classic Companies will be held at America the Beautiful Park. The Farm and Art Market starts at 4 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m. The music will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Both the Market and music are free.

People can enjoy shopping for locally grown produce while listening to great music. Both are free and open to the public. The market also has original unique art by juried artists. The market has fruit and vegetables grown only in Colorado. Some are organic and naturally grown and there exists a touch of the conventional. We are the only farmers market in Colorado Springs that accepts Quest/EBT and debit cards. So remember, buy fresh, buy local!

At Colorado Springs PrideFest, there is something for everyone!
Complete with an all-ages dance floor, beer garden and live entertainment throughout the day, Colorado Springs PrideFest is one of the Pikes Peak region’s most exciting summer events. Whether you’re 21 or 81, PrideFest is the place to get your groove on.
Fun for the entire family, PrideFest boasts a fun-filled parade, food and beverages, vendors and educational information, and even a safe space for kids to play, including Uncle Wilber’s Water Fountain, Bounce House and lots of bubble machines.
And what would PrideFest be without honoring the activists of yesterday and today!?! Whether you’re marching in the parade, chanting in the streets, or watching the PrideFest Rally, Colorado Springs PrideFest creates positive visibility for the GLBT community, while providing a safe space for our community to come out with pride and demand equality!
Colorado Springs PrideFest is the Proud Host of Colorado’s Mass Same-Gender Wedding Service, Commitment Ceremonies, Unions & Anniversary Celebrations! Each year we invite couples to celebrate their commitments to one another among friends, family and the entire community!

Fans of TESSA’s annual Pasta in the Park – a summer evening featuring a pasta cook-off, local-celebrity chefs dressed in crazy themes, fantastic food and wine, outstanding auction items and great live music all in a stunning setting – have long said it’s the most fun fundraiser of the year in Colorado Springs.
This year, the organization’s 15th annual Pasta in the Park celebration will also be a long-awaited chance to experience one of Colorado Springs’ historic gems – the grounds of the beautiful Myron Stratton campus, where TESSA’s operations have just moved. Until recently, few have had access to the Stratton property. Now it is home to TESSA, as well as Partners in Housing and Peak Vista Community Health Centers.
Pasta in the Park begins at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Myron Stratton Home, 2525 S. Highway 115 in Colorado Springs. Tickets cost $75 per person ($25 of it tax deductible), available at www.tessacs.org or by calling (719) 785-6808. The event is the main fundraiser each year for TESSA, the only agency dedicated specifically and solely to the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault in El Paso and Teller Counties in Colorado.

The festivities will include a pasta cook-off featuring local-celebrity chefs; dinner; a silent and traditional auction featuring hundreds of excellent items including great wines, a flat-screen television and a trip to Hawaii; and live music by Soul School. Proceeds from the evening will help TESSA provide safety and services to a growing number of women and children in the community affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.

The onomatopoeically named 2007 Fiddles, Vittles and Vino festival will be held at Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site in Garden of the Gods Park on Saturday, August 25. A great way to get back in touch with the spirit of the harvest, the festival will surely take you back to a time when our lives were a bit more in tune with the cycles of nature!

Gates open at noon, and chef's demonstrations will begin at 12:15 and continue on until 3. Music will be performed between 3 and 9 p.m. this year, with the exception of all-day music at the Homestead Cabin. The food and wine tasting will be held between 4 and 6 p.m.

Tickets are now available online, as well as at the Ranch and Tejon Street Music!

Colorado Springs has a surprisingly rich, yet underrecognized Chinese-American community. No time like the present to change that! The Colorado Springs Chinese Cultural Institute (CSCCI) will hold its premier annual fundraiser the evening of Saturday, September 22nd. The event celebrates the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, which is one of the most important festivals in Chinese Culture.

CSCCI is delighted to announce that Gus Lee, a renowned Chinese-American author, will return as the featured speaker as a result of overwhelmingly positive feedback following his participation in 2006. A variety of talented local musicians will round out the evening's entertainment.

Those in attendance can expect to enjoy banquet style cuisine featuring various Chinese dishes as well as wine, beer and other beverages. Dessert options will include traditional moon cakes and other selections. A variety of donated items will also be on display for silent auction with proceeds benefiting CSCCI.

The event will be held on Saturday, September 22nd from 6:00pm – 9:00pm at the residence of June Chan in Black Forest, CO. Tickets to the event are available immediately. Attendance is capped at 75 and RSVPs must be received by Friday, September 7th. Ticket prices are as follows: Members $40, Non-Members $50, Couples $90. All are welcome to attend.

Some quotes about Ruthie:
"Her voice is a typhoon, bold and rich...superb." Jeff Mccord, Texas Monthly
"Foster's deeply soulful vocals dip into gospel and swing toward contemporary folk with R&B panache. When she sings a cappella, the heavens part." - Margaret Moser, Austin Chronicle

"her talent is universal with no pretense. ...she is a holy Anita Baker ... as bold as Nina Simone... The evocations go on and on..." - Roberta Penn, Seattle Post Intelligencer (PA)

"a songwriter and singer as good as Foster doesn't fit in genres- She creates her own." - James Porter, Time Out Chicago

Superlatives are rare in album titles, and for good reason: unless you're a living legend or a legend-in-the-making like the Man in Black (1958's The Fabulous Johnny Cash) or the Queen of Soul (1962's The Electrifying Aretha Franklin), you're all but begging for a crash course in humility. So if you're going to stick a word like "phenomenal" in front of your name on a record cover, you damn well better have the goods to back it up.

Foster admits to initially having "quite a few reservations" about calling her fifth album " The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster," crediting both her producer, noted Austin-based "swamp music" guitarist Malcolm "Papa Mali" Welbourne, and her label, Houston's Blue Corn Records, for making that particular gutsy call. As for how they came up with it, well ... just give it a listen, and you'll understand. Calling this particular record by this particular woman at this particular time in her life and career anything but "phenomenal" would be akin to false advertising.

If you haven't yet been introduced to the music of this prodigiously gifted singer and songwriter from Texas, you're in for a major epiphany. And if you've been following Foster's career ever since her self-released, 1997 debut, Full Circle, or even since her 2002 breakthrough, Runaway Soul, you're in for an even bigger surprise, because you really haven't ever heard Foster until you hear her now.

Simply put, mama's gotta brand new bag.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Critics Speak.....
"She's got a right to brag. Foster is a natural-born singer with a voice that is potent, unfussy, and, at times, deeply moving." - Renee Graham, Boston Globe
"The disc serves up 57 varieties of soul... In Ms. Foster's wailing voice, "Fruits of My Labor" is the greatest tune Sam Cooke never recorded." -Thor Christensen, Dallas Morning News
"Foster has a deep gritty voice with a little Janis and some Aretha that will please discerning soul and rock fans. Her cover of Lucinda Williams' 'Fruits of My Labor' tops the original." -Dan Aquilante, NY Post "New Faces For '07
Now in its 13th year, Gingerbread and Jazz has become one of the premier events of the holiday season. It is seen by many as the unofficial holiday kick-off. The gala is held on the Historic Day Nursery, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The building is transformed into a magical gingerbread house with jazz bands performing throughout the building. This year, the entertainment will include a piano bar. Guests mingle in different rooms where they enjoy the live music, celebrity bartenders and a selection of hors d'oeuvres and desserts. Servers who move from room to room offer guests additional appetizers and sweets. A highlight of the evening is our Gingerbread Masterpiece Challenge which is similar to an "Iron Chef" competition where teams of professional chefs build gingerbread creations in front of a LIVE audience. The houses are judged and prizes awarded that evening. This year's festivities will include a drawing for fabulous prizes. All proceeds benefit CNC's education programs.
The Festival is sponsored by Blue Moon Belgian White, Pepsi, Boelter, The Gazette, Y96.9, and Hyatt Summerfield Suites.
Brewers from across Colorado (over 20 are expected) will bring 60 to 75 different beers to sample. Some of the brewers already planning to attend include Coors, Blue Moon, Bristol, Breckenridge, Phantom Canyon, Boulder, Twisted Pine, Bull & Bush, Odells, Rockyard, Flying Dog, Steamworks, Shamrock, Wolf Rock, and Glenwood Canyon.
The Festival will also include live entertainment and a merchandise area to get the latest brewer shirts, hats, and pint glasses. For those who don't drink, the Festival will provide a Designated Driver program with a special $10 admission fee that includes unlimited soft drinks.
For those that want a closer relationship to the Festival, the volunteer program is the answer. Volunteers get free admission, a Festival t-shirt, and all the beer samples they want. To volunteer visit the Festival web site (www.AllColoradoBeerFestival.org/volunteer).
In addition to providing Colorado Springs area residents a great opportunity to sample Colorado beers, the Festival will benefit both THEATREWORKS and the USO.
THEATREWORKS is a professional theatre company resident at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. THEATREWORKS produces eight to ten shows in Colorado Springs annually ranging from the annual Shakespeare Festival with free tickets to residents and collaboration with the Pikes Peak Library District's All Pikes Peak Reads program to classics by the world's greatest playwrights and new works by award winning playwrights of today.
For more than 66 years, the USO has provided morale and recreational services for U.S. military personnel and their families only made possible through the generosity of the American public. Today, the USO's 26,000 volunteers operate more than 132 centers around the world, providing such diverse services as free international phone cards (Operation Phone Home), care packages for deploying troops (Operation USO Care Package), support to wounded troops (Operation Enduring Care), and keeping deployed troops connected with their children (United Through Reading program). This summer a new USO center was established at Fort Carson, which will provide much-needed services to military families arriving on post and to military personnel passing through on their way to or from assignments around the world. Now, more than ever, the USO is the way for Americans to show their support for the nation's troops.
In honor of the great French chef Georges Auguste Escoffier (1846 –1935) who popularized and updated traditional French cooking method and was one of the most important leaders in the development of modern French cuisin, the culinary staff of The BROADMOOR presents the 6th Annual "Salute to Escoffier" Weekend, February 8-10, 2008.
With cooking demonstrations, discussions and a wine seminar, the event is capped off with the only Grand Buffet presented in the United States honoring the cuisine that Escoffier made famous. The Salute draws guests from across the country to participate in this event for the Education Fund of the Colorado Restaurant Association and The BROADMOOR's Culinary Training Program and Scholarship Fund.
Saturday evening's Grand Buffet features five separate courses with more than a hundred varied offerings from the Opening Champagne and Caviar Reception, to Grand Buffet Froid, Grand Buffet Chaud, Fromage and Dessert. In honor of Escoffier, French wines and champagnes are served to complement the courses. The evening is enhanced with live entertainment by Broadmoor entertainers Ken Miller and Miss Lila Mori.
Even though Opera Theatre of the Rockies is presenting Carmen in Pikes Peak Center in March, no event this season will have more excitement and glitz than La Fiesta Carmen: the 10th Anniversary Gala. “We’ll be pulling out all the stops for this one,” promised Kathleen Fox Collins, President of the Opera Theatre’s Board of Directors. “Carmen is such an exciting opera that we’ve decided to ride its coattails and spice our Gala with a Spanish theme: decorations, fashion, music and of course, cuisine. I can’t wait to see what Martile (Rowland) comes up with for our entertainment.” Besides dinner and a complete program of entertainment, there will also be a silent auction.
The Pikes Peak Division of the American Heart Association is celebrating its 25th Annual Heart Ball on March 1, 2008 at the International Center at the Broadmoor. As Colorado Springs’ premier black tie event, the Heart Ball attracts over 500 guests including many of Colorado Springs top business leaders and professionals.
This year, the theme of the Gala is A Night to Shine. Guests will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the Colorado Springs Heart Ball, and will join us in honoring Dr. David and Paulette Greenberg for their 25 years of service to the American Heart Association. This extravagant evening will include festive entertainment and fine dining coupled with a silent and live auction where guests can bid on a variety of fantastic auction items donated by local vendors.
Our goal this year is to raise $425,000 in the fight against heart disease and stroke. We are partnering with local companies, like yours, and offering several sponsorship opportunities and benefits to leverage your business needs with our mission. Your sponsorship will benefit both the American Heart Association as well as your company.
Heart disease and stroke are the number one and number three killers respectively in the United States. They affect one in five Americans, claiming the lives of nearly one million of our family members, friends, and co-workers each year. Each day in Colorado, 18 deaths occur from heart disease and 5 deaths occur from stroke. Our goal is to reduce these killers by 25 percent by the year 2010. Your sponsorship for the 2008 Heart Ball will help us achieve that goal and save lives in our community.
New York Times best-selling author Jeffery Deaver is coming to Pikes Peak Writers! Called "the most clever plotter on the planet" by Publisher's Weekly, Jeffery Deaver is the author of twenty-two novels and two collections of short stories. Translated into 25 languages, his novels have appeared on a number of bestseller lists around the world, including the New York Times, The Times of London, and the Los Angeles Times. In 2004, he was awarded the Crime Writers Association of Great Britain's Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award for "Garden Of Beasts" and the Short Story "Dagger" for "The Weekender." "The Bone Collector" was a feature release from Universal Pictures, starring Denzel Washington as Lincoln Rhyme. "A Maiden's Grave" was made into an HBO film retitled "Dead Silence," starring James Garner and Marlee Matlin. Several other of his novels have been optioned by major production studios.
There will also be a writers workshop titled "Writing a Page-Turning Commercial Novel" in which Jeffery Deaver explains how he uses a left-brained approach to structuring a popular novel, following several well-defined tracts--plotting, pacing, character development and market-based input. He will describe how to be a reader-oriented writer, writing for the audience, not for yourself.
An Evening with Jeffery Deaver A no-host reception begins at 5:00 PM in the Lobby Lounge and Tequileria at the Colorado Springs Marriott. Dinner begins in the Marriott's ballroom at 6 PM, followed by Jeffery Deaver's keynote address, "My Life as a Writer." He’ll describe his research and writing process, offer tips and lessons learned over a lifetime of writing, and share anecdotes from his experiences. After a brief question and answer period, Mr. Deaver will sign his books at the Pikes Peak Writers bookstore set up in the lobby outside the ballroom. A special VIP package is available on a first-come, first-served basis for those who wish to sit at Jeffery Deaver’s table during the dinner. Autographed promotional items will also be presented to VIP package purchasers. If you are interested, please register soon, because these $75 seats will go fast! We encourage all Colorado fiction writers interested in writing a page-turning commercial novel to register for both the workshop and the dinner. Don’t miss this opportunity to rub elbows with and learn from a bestselling author. To register for either or both events, go to pikespeakwriters.com or call the PPW Registrar at (719) 531-5723. Saturday March 1, 2008 Marriott Colorado Springs, 5580 Tech Center Drive Writers Workshop 1:00pm – 5:00pm: Members $35, Public $45 Evening Cocktails, Dinner, Speech and Signing: Members $45, Public $50 Total Package: $80 Members, Public $95 Special VIP Packages Available! VIP Seats are Sold Out! Set aside the afternoon and evening of Saturday March 1st, 2008, for a writing workshop, Q&A session, dinner, keynote speech, book sale and signing. Register NOW!
