This exhibit is comprised of acrylics by Corina Garcia and oils by Kaelyn Tischer It opens 5-9 pm June 21 and runs through Aug 3 in Venue 515’s Grand Hallway The artists’ statements:

Corina Garcia: “My work portrays human emotions and identity issues I use my insecurities as the fuel for inspiration to dig deeply into myself I put my flaws and vulnerability on display in order to show my audience who I am and the common insecurities humans have, especially women These feelings are hidden and kept to myself until released into the artwork This exposure creates a sense of calmness after the burden of keeping an emotion locked inside for so long Explosions of pain are unraveled I focus on my identity as a young female because it is a pivotal state of my life as I believe it is for others as well The identity aspect of my work focuses on the female gender and the dis-empowerment role we play to society My exposure of emotions shows both, a helplessness and bring out the empowerment of moving forward with knowledge and acceptance of flaws and vulnerability”

Kaelyn Tischer: “My work depicts figures that exist in a liminal state—transitioning between two phases of life and are not entirely whole Caught between the known past and the unknown future These paintings elucidate the sensation of being reborn again after bouts of darkness, as well as disintegrating back into said darkness”

Steve graciously donated the work to Colorado Springs Together, the nonprofit organization led by citizens that is coordinating the rebuilding in Mountain Shadows
Steve's work will be auctioned and all proceeds will be used to help build the Waldo Canyon Fire Memorial: Monday, June 24, Garden of the Gods Club 3320 Mesa Rd, inspect artwork 6 pm, auction at 7 See the work and RSVP on the CST website

"Half as Common," Short Film by Mimi Cave
"There's Still Hope for Dreams," produced by PHAMALY actor Mark Disette
Panel discussion to include both artists, Dragon Theatre Productions, PHAMALY Theatre Company, UCCS' Theatreworks, and GOCA staff
Documentation features three photographers and their compelling personal narratives - two of them will be a part of this event:
Matt Chmielarczyk's iPhone-generated and social-media shared photography of his young daughter's life-changing surgery explores the line of personal versus public and invites our viewers to become a part of one family's community of support and empathy
Bill Starr has for the past 30 years captured movement in dance, theater, performance art and most recently Colorado's indie/electronic/folk music scene Starr's physical and social challenges from living with acute rheumatoid arthritis since the age of nine inform how he observes and translates movement into his prolific photographic practice

Now in its 82nd year, Donkey Derby Days tops the list of favorite Cripple Creek events People from all over the world descend on downtown, drawn by a chance to watch a race inspired by the town’s resident donkey herd, believed to be distant relatives of the original donkeys from the town’s Gold Rush days Enjoy games, live entertainment, heritage competitions and other fun family activities that will make your visit one to remember!
The origins of this popular Colorado donkey festival date back to the 1930s, when local businessman Charley Lehew thought a Cripple Creek festival would attract people in the summer months It wasn’t long before he and two business partners settled on donkey racing Together, they built a race track, solicited advertising and arranged concessions and entertainment in time for the first-ever Donkey Derby Days festival

Today, this two-day jamboree is one of the most popular of all the Cripple Creek events held throughout the year, and admission to this exciting Cripple Creek festival is 100% FREE!

The donkey races aren’t the only things going on this weekend, however Visit our street vendors, enjoy our live entertainment and participate in a host of other family activities such as our heritage competitions or our activities for the children - guaranteed to make this weekend the best Donkey Derby Days ever Don't forget Fido - we have a dog show where your best friend can compete for prizes!

Al Eberhardt’s Changing Times Quintet might be described as “Southern Colorado’s Fabulous Five” This group plays standards and some originals that appeal to jazz and dance crowds of all ages The Changing Times was created by Al Eberhardt in 1976 and was at that point a six piece band made up of all Air Force Academy band musicians who wanted to “moonlight” with gigs off base After the arrival of John Turner as pianist for the group, it added more vocals to it’s repertoire and dropped from a sextet to a quartet format for most engagements, to make the group more affordable The group’s popularity grew through the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s and was featured as a house band in the Broadmoor Hotel for almost two decades during that period The band even once embarked on a special “fan’s musical cruise” of the Caribbean for the group’s loyal followers, and band family members The Changing Times has also made three

recordings
The national magazine monthly publication, “Dancing USA” and the Denver Post, have both given Changing Time’s albums high reviews Currently, the original band members now mostly perform with other groups, but still are featured with “The Changing Times” quintet for occasional local special engagements that demand their unique skills and abilities
For the July 3, 2013 concert at The Broadmoor Community Church, The Changing Times Quintet will feature Al Eberhardt on trumpet and vocals, John Turner on piano and vocals, Carlos Crull on Tenor sax and vocals, Wayne Wilkinson on guitar, and Eric Eberhardt on drums and vocals This highly versatile group will perform a variety of musical styles of jazz and swing tunes

Part of Stargazers Summer Fun Friday Free Concerts! The Glory days of the American cowboy have been relegated to a bygone era that ended over 100 years ago Yet, the romantic legend of the cowboy lives on in song Around the campfire, the cowboy sang of life on the trail with all the challengers, hardships and dangers encountered while pushing contrary critters endless miles up the legendary dusty trails that headed north While much of what is included in the genre of “cowboy music” is “traditional," a number of songs have been written in the last 75-plus years and made famous by groups like the “Sons of the Pioneers” and “Riders in the Sky” and individual performers such as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Michael Martin Murphey and other “singing cowboys” Singing in the “wrangler style” these entertainers have served to preserve the cowboy as a unique American hero
The Flying W Wranglers have been a part of the tradition for 60 years, making them the world’s second oldest western singing group In 2009 the Western Music Association inducted the Flying W Wranglers into the Hall of Fame Definitely not “drug store” cowboys, the lines of these men are interwoven in rural communities around horses, cattle and the great outdoors, And, when it’s time for branding at the Flying W each fall, these cowboys get down and dirty and take care of business There is definite “authenticity” in their performances whether during the Chuckwagon Season, the Winter Steakhouse or performing concerts abroad January and February find them working in an on-site recording studio and putting together new shows for the upcoming year The Flying W Wranglers are an integral part of preserving our great western heritage

All all media show celebrating Outsider Art and Steampunk - Juried by Phil Lear and Timothy C Flood

Featuring work by Myles Pinkney With Kathleen Reed and Henna by Laurie Covney

Costumes and themed dress are encouraged

Show runs through July 12
The term outsider art was coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English synonym for “art brut” which is French for “raw art” or “rough art,” a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture The English term “outsider art” is often applied to include self-taught or naïve art makers Typically, those labeled as outsider artists have little or no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century Steampunk works are often set in an alternate history of the 19th century’s British Victorian era or American “Wild West”, in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era’s perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art
Pieces in this show reflect these themes and include paintings, sculptures, worn art, jewelry, and more Costumes and themed dress are encouraged for the opening of the show

Art On the Run rolls into a second year

Patty Jewett Neighborhood Association Taps Uber-Local Talent for Free Performance Series Along Historic Shooks Run Trail

The Patty Jewett Neighborhood Association’s (PJNA) second installment of Art on the Run, a musical and theatrical series that will surprise trail users along the Shooks Run Trail with a delightful, and unexpected, engagement with the arts, will kick off June 5th

Every Wednesday evening, from June 5 – July 17 (no show July 3) from 6-7 pm, Art on the Run will host six free events along the Shooks Run Trail between Columbia and San Miguel in the Patty Jewett neighborhood, just south of Dogtooth Coffe Performances include:

June 5: Rare Ould Times http://the-rare-ould-timescom/author/rareouldtimes/(Celtic)

June 12: Millibo Art Theatre http://wwwthematorg/

June 19: Burn the Maps http://burnthemapscom/ (Indie-folk)

June 26: Colorado Springs Conservatory http://wwwcoloradospringsconservatoryorg/

July 10: Colorado Springs Conservatory http://wwwcoloradospringsconservatoryorg/

July 17: Mr Kilroy's Bus (Americana)

Knowing that the Patty Jewett neighborhood is rich with talent, PJNA tapped into artists who live within the neighborhood to build out the series schedule, growing the project from four performances in 2012 to six this year

Funded by Pikes Peak Community Foundation’s ingenuity grants, each performance will benefit The Stink Bug Project which supports families who have a child diagnosed with a life-threatening illness The Stink Bug Project provides well-trained, loving companion dogs from the Colorado Correctional Industries (CCI), Prison Trained K-9 Companion Program (PTKCP)

Bex Marshall’s unique style of guitar playing is a combined technique of slide, blues rock, ragtime and roots pickin’

Her voice is a powerful melting pot of old black woman’s heartache and rock diva soul Bex is a writer of distinction and notability, she pushes the boundaries of blues, her songs have been called timeless, touches of genius, and now with her 7 piece band, she is literally a musical tornado

On Bex’s latest recordings you will find swamp blues, splashes of gospel and colorful bluegrass all with an exciting lyrically British twist

This is a homegrown Pub Quiz modeled after those in Ireland and the UK

What is a Pub Quiz? Good question, find out more here Or read about us in Westword

Our quizzes cover everything from celebrities in trouble to local lore to bad television You can get a feel for the questions we ask by playing a sample round here

We’re the only pub quiz that has audio questions: "Name that Tune,” and one comprised of soundbites from movies and TV

Play in teams of up to six or by yourself if you're some kind of savant

If you want to play but don’t have a team, come anyway We can usually get single players recruited onto an existing team Others have had success wrangling teammates on the Strictly Platonic section of Craigslist

Winning team gets street cred, bar cash and other prizes depending on the venue Bonus Questions for free pints are sprinkled throughout the quiz

You don’t have to be a trivia God to enjoy the quiz Since you’re playing on a team, the collective knowledge base makes for more fun, less pressure It’s not Final friggin Jeopardy
