Hear the shrill whistle of the Western Museum of Mining & Industry’s 1928 Osgood Steam Shovel. Learn how compressed air locomotives replaced the poor mule in hauling mountains of ore, and then see one rumble out of the past and down the track. Last, but not least, walk into the Museum’s operating gold refinery. Listen to the stories describing the dangers of being a mill man. Understand how technology from the industrial revolution helped our ancestor’s hew a living out of Colorado’s hard rock, and then brace yourself as the kinetic energy of the 1890’s refinery vibrates alive. Customary Admission applies. Members free.

MARAVILLAS DE LOS TEJEDORES
WONDERS OF THE WEAVERS
Nineteenth Century Rio Grande Weavings
From the Collection of the Albuquerque Museum
Opening May 26, 2007

Hispanic weavings are the epitome of Southwestern art and culture and this summer the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum showcases the Hispanic textile tradition with Wonders of the Weavers (Maravillas de los Tejedores).

This collection of 37 Hispanic Rio Grande textiles brings together a variety of Rio Grande textile styles made between 1820 and 1900 and emphasizes weavings from the Albuquerque area, the historic center of the Rio Grande weaving industry. A Hispanic treadle loom upon which two of the featured early blankets were woven is also featured. Weaving tools including a reed, a spinning wheel bobbin, wool cards and sheep shears illustrate the tools of the early industry.

Since 1598 Spanish entradas into the Rio Grande Valley brought the first sheep into the region. They also brought professional weavers from Spain who introduced the horizontal treadle loom. Through trade, raiding, and other aspects of cultural contact between and among Spanish colonists and native people, traditional Spanish weaving tools and methods spread throughout the Southwest.

Faces of Money:
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

What did Cleopatra really look like? Probably more like Julius Caesar than Elizabeth Taylor, based on her image as portrayed on ancient Egyptian coins.

Visitors to the American Numismatic Association’s Money Museum can see Cleopatra, legendary rulers and explorers, conquerors, tyrants, English queens, American political icons, those who fought for a cause, inventors and entertainers at a new exhibit, “The Faces of Money: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly.”

In 1949, Sayyid Qutb came from Egypt to Greeley, Colorado, to take a master's degree in education. There he found American life primitive and shocking, full of green lawns, bad hair cuts, and sorority girls. Our brand new production, written by Theatreworks artistic director Murray Ross, imagines what might have happened between the founder of Islamic radicalism and some mischievous coeds, who introduce him to a new chaotic world, the land of Dar al-Harb.

The Estemere Estate consists of six buildings nestled against the mountains on 6-1/2 acres on the west side of Palmer Lake – the main residence, the carriage house, chapel, cottage, garage and shed – all finished in yellow clapboard siding with red asphalt shingled roofs. The main residence is a Queen Anne Victorian built in 1887 by William Finley Thompson, the founder of the Town of Palmer Lake. It contains seven original fireplaces complete with carved mantles and imported tiles, a billiards room with original stained glass windows, a second floor containing five bedrooms and walk-in closets, a third floor with sitting room and observatory, a fourth floor consisting of a “widow’s walk” with awesome views of Monument and Elephant Rock, and a fifth floor tower that still has a section of the original roofing and siding. The residence has been fully restored and furnished with period pieces.

TOUR GUIDES: Roger & Kim Ward. The Wards are the owners and restorers of The Estemere Estate. Roger is a physicist who worked for Hewlett Packard for many years, then was CEO/President of a company that manufactured quartz-related components for the oil and gas field; he is published widely in scholarly technical journals. Kim is a neuroscientist, specializing in schizophrenia research. The restoration of The Estemere Estate is a labor of love for the Wards.

NOTE: This Tour is NOT handicapped accessible.

DIRECTIONS: 380 Glenway St., Palmer Lake, Co. Travel I-25 North to Monument, take Highway 105 West (Exit 161) to Palmer Lake. Turn Left onto Glenway Street to its End and enter the Estemere Estate via the tree-lined drive. Carpooling fom Colorado Springs is highly recommended.

LOCATION: Meet in the parking lot of Congregational Church, 103 Pawnee Avenue in Manitou Springs.

TOUR GUIDES: Rev. David Hunting, Deborah Harrison
TOUR COORDINATOR: Cathy Mundy

THE TOUR: Built in 1880, the Community Congregational Church is the oldest church in Manitou. The first stage, now the Nave, was erected at a cost of $3400 by Angus Gillis and George Snider. The stone was quarried from Williams Canon behind the Cave of the Winds. On the National Register of Historic Places, it continues to reflect a classic and quaint style of sacred architecture. Its rare Anderson Pipe Organ is one of only four left in the country. We will also visit Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the quaint shingle-style Catholic Church, which was first erected on Ruxton Avenue in 1889 by the Gillis Brothers. The building was badly burned in 1903 but rose again to its former appearance within just three months, thanks to generous donors such as General Palmer, and continues to serve the citizens of Manitou well. Colorado Gray Lines Tours is generously furnishing shuttle busses at no cost for this Tour.

LOCATION: 104 E. Rio Grande St., Colorado Springs

THE TOUR: In 1897, fourteen visionary Colorado Springs women founded the Day Nursery Association, now known as the Child Nursery Centers. One of the founders was Alice Bemis Taylor, who moved to Colorado Springs in the late 1800s for health reasons. Ms. Taylor had a keen interest in architecture and a strong desire to bring beauty and elegance into the lives of those who had little or none. With this in mind, she built the Historic Day Nursery located at 104 E. Rio Grande, which was dedicated in December of 1923, as a tribute to her mother and as a permanent facility for less fortunate young children. The dedication reads “to all mothers and all children”. Mrs. Taylor donated the land and building to the Day Nursery.

From I-25 take the Cimarron Street exit west. Cimarron Street will turn into Highway 24. After the 31st light, turn left onto Ridge Road. Red Rock Canyon will be on the south side of the street. The parking lot is located at the end of Ridge Road.

THE TOUR: Red Rock Canyon Open Space consists of 789 acres of dramatic ridges and beautiful canyons located at the western edge of Colorado Springs. The site was acquired by the City of Colorado Springs in 2003; prior to that time the land was privately owned. It was the site of numerous commercial ventures that left an indelible mark on this natural scenic treasure. This 90-minute walking tour will examine the geology, paleontology, archaeology, and history of Red Rock Canyon. It will include a trip into one of the quarries that extracted the red sandstone for building materials. There will also be a discussion of planned improvements for the Open Space, efforts to protect its cultural and natural resources, and the development of interpretive signage and other materials.

LOCATION: 701 S. CASCADE AVENUE

TOUR GUIDE: Michael Collins Architecture

THE TOUR: The Maytag Aircraft Corporation building, designed by Jim Wallace, AIA of Lusk & Wallace Architects in 1957, was placed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties in 2006. The building is significant as an exceptional example of Modern architecture in Colorado Springs. Contributing features include its folded plate roof, cantilevered walls, recessed foundation (which makes it appear to be floating above the ground), and use of an exterior courtyard as an integral part of the building. The building is also historically significant for serving as the Maytag Aircraft Corporation’s headquarters from 1957 through 1982. The company specialized in providing aircraft refueling services to the military, and maintenance and servicing of executive aircraft and the manufacture of aircraft parts. Its current owner is Court Appointed Special Advocates of the Pikes Peak Region (CASA), a non-profit organization dedicated to serving our area’s victimized children.

TOUR GUIDES: Michael Collins, AIA Michael Collins Architects will speak to us of the building’s architectural features. Trudy Strewler has been the Executive Director of CASA since its inception in 1989; Roz Stouffer as Operations Manager took on the project of getting the Maytag Building on the State Register of Historic Properties, which was granted to the Maytag Building in December 2005.

The Old Homestead House Museum is a peek into the shadier side of Cripple Creek's history. The Homestead House was once the most famous brothel in Cripple Creek. Owned and operated by Pearl DeVere, the opulent parlor bustled with activity and became known for its impeccable service, high-powered customers and its glamorous madams. At a time when $3 a day was considered a good wage for a miner, Pearl charged $250 a night, and got it. Today, the Homestead House is a museum that has been lovingly restored with velvet bedspreads and handmade furniture. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days a week.

The Press at Colorado College, founded by Jim Trissell in 1978, is a letterpress dedicated to the art of making limited edition books and broadsides. Under Trissell's guidance, The Press became one of the finest letterpresses in the country, producing stunningly beautiful books on a variety of subjects, including "Color for the Letterpress," "Twelve Mammal Skulls," "A Selection of Poems by Helen Hunt Jackson and Emily Dickinson" and "Silence," the latter considered one of the most beautiful books ever made. Over the years The Press has published work by some of the best writers in the English language. Since Trissell's death, The Press has continued its work under the supervision of Brian Molanphy, Chris Forsythe and Colin Frazer. From its inception, The Press has served as a classroom for students interested in book arts and literature.

Pax Quaeritur Bello
(Let Peace be Sought through War)
– Oliver Cromwell’s personal motto

Coins, Crown & Conflict: An Exploration of Cromwell’s England explores the period from the reign of Charles I and the English Civil Wars to the first years of the restored British monarchy under Charles II, through the coins, medals, people and objects associated with Oliver Cromwell.

Oliver Cromwell has been the subject of speculation and research over the 350 years since his death. Some have praised him as a great reformer and supporter of religious freedom while others have reviled him as a ruthless tyrant. One thing we know is true – during his life (1599 – 1658) there was great change in England in religious, economic and political terms. Cromwell’s own actions and the events of his lifetime form one of the pivotal points in the history of Great Britain and her colonies.

The exhibit features the Petition Crown, one of England's most rare and valuable coins. This marks the first time the coin has been displayed in the United States. Other artifacts include Oliver Cromwell's death mask, spectacles, and gauntlets.

How and why did money originate? What famous ancient leaders helped define how money looked and was used – then and now? What do the words and artwork on ancient coins tell us about the people who used them – and about ourselves? Travel back in time over 2,000 years and find out.

Invented in the 7th century BC in the Kingdom of Lydia, coins replaced cows and sheep as the standard for trade. Soon hundreds of mints in ancient Greece were using dies to produce silver coins similar to our own, with mint marks and two-sided imagery. Explore the foundations of modern money with a trip to ancient Greece.

In ancient Rome, money was used to pay salaries, purchase slaves and spread propaganda. Soldiers made more than professors, a day at the coliseum was free, and emperors used coins to announce their rise to power and promote their policies and accomplishments. Enter a Roman temple and learn about life, money and mass media during history’s most famous and infamous empire.

The Spanish Peaks stand apart from the mass of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, near Walsenburg, Colorado. Because these twin mountains are visible far out on the plains they have served for centuries as a beacon for American Indians, Spaniards, fur trappers, traders, soldiers, and travelers. In their new publication Spanish Peaks: Land and Legends, author Conger Beasley Jr. and photographer Barbara Sparks collaborate to tell the story of these remarkable peaks, the legends they have inspired, and the people who created them. On Saturday, July 21, at 2 p.m. Beasley and Sparks will read selections from their book in an illustrated free program at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. A book sale and signing follows the presentation.

This year the tours include:
·	The Lowell Thomas Museum, which is offering a special guided tour of early mining artifacts, early 20th Century furnished rooms, and the doctor’s office equipment of Dr. A. C. Denman. A full-sized model of an early settler’s cabin reveals another more primitive way of living in that day.
·	The Fortune Club, a long-time favorite ice cream fountain gathering place which is presently being restored. The second floor has rooms for rent, furnished much as they were in the early 20th Century. Notice the original primitive painting and the brass sign on the double doors leading to the Ladies Room.
·	An Edwardian house, built in 1914, which features spacious rooms and a second story. It is currently being lovingly restored true to the period. The kitchen still has the original wood/coal burning stove, but is otherwise a modern dream kitchen.
·	A Victorian house whose outside architecture is completely respected. However, the interior is delightfully modern—light steams in on the open spaces. You will see how the best of both worlds can be combined.
·	A home, built next to where the Midland Terminal Railroad used to wend its way, enjoys a site punctuated by a decorative iron fence and has one of the best views in town. Edwardian accents and a large living room window mark the style of the interior rooms.

Buy your $5 ticket for the Tour at the Victor Hotel,
the Lowell Thomas Museum, the Fortune Club, and Nana’s Attic. (Children 10 and under are welcomed free.)
Proceeds will support and preserve Victor’s early 20th Century architecture.

So, you would like to see the Albertosaurus Libratus, the Bambiraptor Feinbergi, Edmontosaurus Annectens, and, of course, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, but you're far to lazy to the whole H.G. Welles thing. Let the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center do the time traveling for you. You'll see the dino-buddies mentioned above, or what's left of them, and much more.

The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Center (RMDRC) was founded in 2004 by Mike and J.J. Triebold, of Triebold Paleontology Incorporated (TPI). All of the specimens contained in our exhibits are on loan from TPI. RMDRC is located right in downtown Woodland Park, Colorado and encompasses 20,000sq. ft. of which 12,000sq. ft. is dedicated to exhibits.

RMDRC holds over 30 life sized specimens, primarily skeletons, and houses TPI operations that directly contribute to the RMDRC.

Global Business

TPI is an independent company that has been in operation since 1989. The company provides services for museums and individuals ranging from paleontological exploration, data collection, excavation, preparation, restoration, skeletal mounting, mold making and casting. Specimens and replica casts collected, prepared, and restored by TPI can be seen in museums the world over. Triebold Paleontology works with academic paleontologists to ensure the preservation of fossil specimens from North America.

Mike Triebold has been collecting fossils for more than 20 years and has been featured on The Learning Channel's "Paleoworld," the Discovery Channel's "Bone Head Detectives," Fox television specials, US News and World Report, Newsweek, National Geographic and others. Currently, Triebold Paleontology Inc. (TPI) maintains the traveling exhibit, "Savage Ancient Seas" featuring marine reptiles from Kansas.

TPI operates dig sites in South Dakota, North Dakota, Kansas and Montana. Mr. and Mrs. Triebold have been residents of Woodland Park since 1996.

You may not recognize the name Thomas McLaren, but if you've lived in the Pikes Peak region for any time, you surely recognize his architectural style. Most of MacLaren's work is still standing in Colorado Springs and throughout the state, including Colorado Springs City Hall, City Auditorium, Grace Episcopal Church, Sacred Heart Church, and the Orchard House at Rock Ledge Ranch. MacLaren brought artistic creativity, beauty and technological innovation to the design of public and residential buildings in Colorado Springs. From his his arrival in Colorado Springs in 1894 until his death in 1928, MacLaren defined architectural style in our City. Most of MacLaren's work is still standing in Colorado Springs and throughout the state, including Colorado Springs City Hall, City Auditorium, Grace Episcopal Church, Sacred Heart Church, and the Orchard House at Rock Ledge Ranch. Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site celebrates the life and career of noted architect Thomas MacLaren with a public exhibition of his work, as shown in stunning photos by photographer Paul Allen. The exhibit, curated in partnership with the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum is on display at the Carriage House at Rock Ledge Ranch. It inspires and gives insight into to life of a man who had an enormous and lasting impact on the City of Colorado Springs.
