Entwined is a broad concept, so let’s look at some ways to define it: Literally, when things are entwined they are brought together, as in relationships among people, places, things and ideas It could be a permanent melding or a fleeting moment of joining When two pieces of twine are joined they are twisted together, suggesting another take on the concept Entwined is also the theme of the next group show at Commonwheel Artists' Co-op!

A Peoples’ Choice Award of a $100 Commonwheel Gift Certificate will be determined by popular vote For more information call 719-685-1008

Join us First Friday, February 5 from 5-8 pm for the opening reception for Boulder photographer James Balog's Extreme Ice Survey, a sublime and compelling series of large-scale photographs and time-lapse animations

The Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) brings art and science together with stunningly sublime photographic imagery and time-lapse animations illustrating the rapid changes happening to Earth's glacial ice It is at once visually captivating, educational, and compelling And it is the perfect beginning to Smokebrush Gallery's 2010 programming EIS is the most wide-ranging glacier study ever conducted using ground-based, real-time photography EIS uses time-lapse photography, conventional photography, and video to document the rapid changes now occurring on the Earth's glacial ice

James Balog and his EIS team have specially customized and installed 27 time-lapse cameras at 15 sites in Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, and the Rocky Mountains EIS supplements this ongoing record with annual repeat photography in Iceland, the Alps, and Bolivia Mr Balog recently presented his work at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen in December 2009, was featured on the cover of National Geographic and was recently appointed as the ECO-Ambassador to the Samsung Corporation for the Vancouver Olympics, and his one-hour documentary will release this Spring on PBS's NOVA These credentials merely support the value and timeliness of this contemporary image-maker's work Although the science world has given Mr Balog more attention than the art world at this point, the work itself shares no exclusive borders with either world and certainly stands up on its own in the gallery and museum settings

The American Civil War evokes many strong thoughts and emotions to this day – the end of slavery in our country, the great and terrible battles that saw more that 600,000 men perish, and the secession –– and eventual reunion –– of 11 states Amid brilliant and incompetent generals, vast military campaigns and political turmoil, the impact of money on the war often gets overlooked A House Divided: Money of the Civil War, a new exhibit opening Oct 9 at the American Numismatic Association's Money Museum, takes a unique look at this epic, bloody time, while showcasing the era's coins, paper money, medals, and new ideas in war financing that helped lead to the North's victory The Civil War changed the country forever, including its monetary and economic system: a system based on bullion coinage and privately issued paper money was replaced by a central system controlled by the federal government To pay for the war, the North and South were forced to issue huge amounts of money not backed by gold or silver – a fragile concept in the 1860s The emergence of Union "greenbacks" and "war bonds" helped create a solid economy; in the Confederacy, inflation ran rampant and made it impossible to continue the war effort Visitors to the exhibit are given keepsake Identity Cards featuring one of 34 real people, some famous and some not, who were involved in the war The card includes a photo and information about the person Visitors are encouraged to look for additional interesting facts about their identities while exploring the exhibit Some of the identities include John Wilkes Booth, Clara Barton, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and William Jackson Palmer A House Divided: Money of the Civil War is sponsored by First Community Bank, and runs through Fall 2009
