Hear the shrill whistle of the Western Museum of Mining & Industry’s 1928 Osgood Steam Shovel. Learn how compressed air locomotives replaced the poor mule in hauling mountains of ore, and then see one rumble out of the past and down the track. Last, but not least, walk into the Museum’s operating gold refinery. Listen to the stories describing the dangers of being a mill man. Understand how technology from the industrial revolution helped our ancestor’s hew a living out of Colorado’s hard rock, and then brace yourself as the kinetic energy of the 1890’s refinery vibrates alive. Customary Admission applies. Members free.

The Colorado Balloon Classic is one of the most visually spectacular events of the year in the entire Pkes Peak Region. Organized in 1977, it's grown to be the largest and the longest continuously running hot air balloon festival in the Rocky Mountain Region as well as the State of Colorado.

It's free and it's held in Memorial Park off Pikes Peak Avenue between Hancock Ave. and Union Blvd near the shores of Prospect Lake. Mass ascensions of approximately 90 balloons are scheduled for 7 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings with a Balloon Glo (very cool-they fill and light them up from inside with the burners!) scheduled for Saturday and Sunday evenings. Each year a variety of concessions are available and entertainment is provided during each event. See the website for full details.

Le Chat Lunatique plays a combination of Gypsy Swing, Western Swing, and anything else they please! Filthy, mangy jazz is their forte. The band was formed due to a shared love for the great Hot Club of France, a gypsy swing group from 1940s Paris, which included the combined genius of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. This Albuquerque-based quartet, which features CC alum Muni Kulasinghe ('97) was recently voted Best Jazz Act by the Weekly Alibi.

On Sunday, June 24 at 2:30 p.m., First Christian Church is presenting Drew Mays, one of those dedicated musicians called an “amateur pianist.” By day, Drew is an ophthalmologist. After work, he spends time with his wife and four children, then practices piano until midnight. The second-place winner of the 2006 Amateur Pianists International competition, Drew will play selections by Bach, Beethoven, Ravel, Schumann and Liszt. A free will offering will be taken, and all are welcome at a reception hosted by API following the concert.

Many years ago, Drew Mays received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Alabama. He studied further at the Conservatory of Music in Hanover, Germany and at the Manhattan School of Music with Nina Svetlanova. But at some point, the necessity of having a job with a substantial income and security overcame his love of music, and he changed career paths. Drew is currently an ophthalmologist sub-specializing in glaucoma, but his passion for music has led him back to the piano, which he practices diligently. He lives with his wife, Therese and four children in Birmingham, Alabama.

From May 28-June 3, he will be competing in the International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in Fort Worth, Texas. For his concert at First Christian Church on June 24, Drew will perform the Prelude and Fugue in G Major from J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier Book I, Ludwig von Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata, Maurice Ravel’s Jeux d’Eau, Robert Schumann’s Toccata, and the Mephisto Waltz by Franz Liszt.

For more information on Amateur Pianists International, please visit their website at www.apiano.org.

On Friday, June 22 at 7:00 p.m., First Christian Church is presenting the African Children’s Choir. Composed of children ages 7-12 from Uganda, the choir will perform folk songs and spirituals both in English and their own language, dressed in native costumes and accompanied by ethnic instruments. Come and enjoy a heart-warming encounter with the children of another culture. A free-will offering will be taken for the choir.

The African Children’s Choir features delightful African children ages 7 through 11. Many have lost one or both parents through the devastation of war, famine and disease. Their voices sing out on behalf of Africa’s 12 million AIDS orphans. They represent the future of the entire continent, demonstrating the potential to become strong leaders for a better future in their homeland. In spite of the tragedy that has marred their young lives, these musically gifted children are radiant with hope and wonderfully entertaining. They melt the hearts of audiences with their charming smiles and joyful African melodies and dance. The primary goal of the African Children’s Choir is to raise awareness of the need of destitute and orphaned children in Africa and to raise funds for continued development and support of the Choir’s relief and development programs. Once Choir members have completed a concert tour, they will return to their homelands with the support, care and education necessary for bettering their future and that of their brothers and sisters.

In old California, the masked man with cape, sword, and whip mounted his stallion Tornado to rescue many a poor native from the brutalities of the rich and powerful. But what can that clashing old fox do here and now, for a young immigrant transplanted into an alien Anglo world?

Is he still the people's champion? Surprising answers are forthcoming in the world premiere of a brand new Zorro play by a noted Latino playwright, especially commissioned for our annual collaboration with our library's All Pikes Peak Reads project.

You’ll need to brush up on Aussie slang, because this summer’s star attraction is a flock of budgies. Budgies? Yanks over here know them better as parakeets.

In the wilds of Australia budgies are everywhere. The word budgie is short for budgerigar – the indigenous green and Budgerigar birdyellow bird of Australia. And they don't occur naturally anywhere else in the world.

But the “Budgie Buddies” experience is more than just seeing lots of birds. Imagine being in an indoor, walk-thru aviary surrounded by more than a hundred free-flight budgies, Australian finches and cockatiels – and having a bird or two land on your arm or shoulder to nibble on a seed stick, which will be available for $1.

And making a return engagement will be the hugely popular wallabies, along with a couple of baby “joeys” that kids can meet and touch. The marsupials, a mix of Parma and Bennett wallabies, will be located in the same area as last year – across from the elephant yard. And like last year, visitors will have to stay on the pathway while the wallabies can go wherever they please, which might very well be on the sidewalk in front of you or the grass next to you! The budgies are located adjacent to the wallabies.

The Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce presents Little London Winds at the Soda Springs Park Pavilion from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday night. Soda Springs Park is located at the intersection of Park Street and Manitou Avenue in Manitou Springs, CO.

The Little London Winds is Colorado Springs' premier Wind Ensemble. It was established in August 1992 by a small group of musicians who wished to play quality literature and maintain a high level of performance. The idea behind the ensemble was to gather together serious amateur musicians who enjoy working toward a high standard of performance.

When the wind ensemble formed, the members wanted a name that would connect the group to the area. Back before Colorado Springs decided to use the "Springs" from Manitou Springs, the city was called Little London. Hence, the name Little London Winds was chosen based on history. The performers liked the fact that the name Little London Winds also reflected the wonderful tradition of band music founded by the British.

If you long for the good old days, those seemingly bygone days when your community could get together over pie and ice cream and celebrate the long and lazy days of summer, then long no more.

The Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce presents the 6th annual Pie Baking Contest and the 12th annual Ice Cream Social held in Soda Springs Park from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Little London winds will perform at the park as they have every Monday this summer, but this time you'll be able to eat pie and ice cream and talk to your Manitoid neighbors.

Contact the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce at 719-685-5089 for contest rules and entry information if you fancy yourself a pie baker and would like to participate.
