<p>Comprised of images recently discovered in a lost cache of photographic negatives, this exhibition presents Muray’s portraits of the artist Frida Kahlo. Muray, whose work appeared regularly in Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair, was a personal friend of Kahlo in the 1930s and 1940s. His photographs capture the essence of Frida Kahlo, significant people in her life and her deep interest in her Mexican heritage.

<p>MARAVILLAS DE LOS TEJEDORES
WONDERS OF THE WEAVERS
Nineteenth Century Rio Grande Weavings
From the Collection of the Albuquerque Museum
Opening May 26, 2007

Hispanic weavings are the epitome of Southwestern art and culture and this summer the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum showcases the Hispanic textile tradition with Wonders of the Weavers (Maravillas de los Tejedores).

This collection of 37 Hispanic Rio Grande textiles brings together a variety of Rio Grande textile styles made between 1820 and 1900 and emphasizes weavings from the Albuquerque area, the historic center of the Rio Grande weaving industry. A Hispanic treadle loom upon which two of the featured early blankets were woven is also featured. Weaving tools including a reed, a spinning wheel bobbin, wool cards and sheep shears illustrate the tools of the early industry.

Since 1598 Spanish entradas into the Rio Grande Valley brought the first sheep into the region. They also brought professional weavers from Spain who introduced the horizontal treadle loom. Through trade, raiding, and other aspects of cultural contact between and among Spanish colonists and native people, traditional Spanish weaving tools and methods spread throughout the Southwest.

<p>Everything but the "oink," an old saying, sums up the dietary and economic importance of hogs to farmers, ranchers and homesteaders. Hogs were processed in the coolest Fall months and everyone participated in this annual event. So come dressed for the weather and join us at the barnyard for this educational demonstration.</p>

<p>The Pikes Peak Watercolor Society’s Watermedia XV will be on view at the Gallery of Contemporary Art. Juried by Frank Webb, a respected artist, author, and instructor, this exhibition highlights the best of aqueous media from around the world. In addition to the exhibition, an instructional workshop series will be hosted at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and taught by Frank Webb.

The Pikes Peak Watercolor Society (P.P.W.S.) was founded to promote excellence in the watercolor media and to encourage artistic achievement in the community. Their first exhibit was held at the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs in March of 1988, with a 2nd exhibit during Christmas of that same year. Today the P.P.W.S. continues to promote and encourage watercolor through its sponsorship of exhibitions, scholarships, workshops, and through its support of other local arts organizations and educational institutions.</p>

<p>Faces of Money:
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

What did Cleopatra really look like? Probably more like Julius Caesar than Elizabeth Taylor, based on her image as portrayed on ancient Egyptian coins.

Visitors to the American Numismatic Association’s Money Museum can see Cleopatra, legendary rulers and explorers, conquerors, tyrants, English queens, American political icons, those who fought for a cause, inventors and entertainers at a new exhibit, “The Faces of Money: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly.”</p>

One of the most prestigious minds in the art world, Dr. Hoving is a celebrated author, former head of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and passionate connoisseur of the arts. As the “inventor” of the blockbuster exhibition King Tut, he has years of experience and insight into the modern museum and will lend his profound knowledge of art to a variety of events celebrating the Fine Arts Center's new museum.

On Thursday August 2, Dr. Hoving will share his expertise and appreciation of art through tales of his escapades in the world of international art. “The Artful Tommy: Thomas Hoving, America’s Culture Scamp, Reveals How He Zig-Zagged His Way Through the Art World" promises to be both entertaining and enlightening. Lecture ticket-holders will be able to explore the new museum before the lecture begins, starting at 5 pm.

Thomas Hoving joined the Met in 1959, working in the medieval department at The Cloisters until 1965, when he became curator of the department. He left the museum in 1966 to become New York Mayor John V. Lindsay's parks commissioner, but in 1967 returned to the Met as director after the incumbent, James J. Rorimer, died suddenly. Hoving assumed the directorship on March 17, 1967 and presided over a massive expansion and renovation of the museum, successfully adding many important collections to its holdings. Hoving is the author of books on a number of art-related subjects, as well as his memoirs of his time at the Met. His titles include Making the Mummies Dance: Inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Master Pieces: The Curator's Game, False Impressions, Greatest Works of Art of Western Civilization, and Art For Dummies in the "...For Dummies" series. His newest book, The Artful Tommy, will be available during the FAC opening events.

"As director of Manhattan's Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1967 to 1977, brash, energetic Hoving transformed a stodgy, elitist institution into a bottom-line-oriented business enterprise, a modernized, expansive museum that actively engages the public."

<p>The May Natural History Museum of the Tropics, located southwest of Colorado Springs, is a unique museum - there is not another like it on the continent.

Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week.

Beginning in 1929, John M. May and his late father, James F. W. May, started exhibiting their Tropical display at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, Canada, and at Flower Shows and Sports Shows in many large American cities. These showings were so popular and won the Mays so much attention that they have continued them right up to the present. Over the past sixty-five years they have put on their exhibitions in almost every U.S. state and every province of Canada.

Fifty-seven years ago the May family came to Colorado Springs and made this their headquarters. In the 1940's John May built a permanent Museum and headquarters building on their ranch nine miles southwest of Colorado Springs and one mile west of Highway 115. It is near Fort Carson and today a replica of the Hercules Beetle of the West lndies marks the turnoff to the Museum. Over all these years this fabulous exhibition has been improved and enlarged. Even though the main collection contains over one hundred thousand invertebrates, about 8,000 are all that are shown to the general public because this is all a person can look at in one visit - even then some people spend two or three hours and return many times to see what they missed on previous visits. Generally speaking, the largest, the most beautiful and the most valuable are the ones on display; exhibits are changed from year to year.

Almost everyone is curious about the invertebrates that can harm them and there are many of the most poisonous on display. One of these is the 9 inch scorpion of the Congo in Africa. There are many other kinds capable of poisoning and even killing some people. The very large purple Tarantula spiders of Peru are on display. They are the world's largest spiders and can actually catch and kill mice and small birds.

There are Colombian Beetles so large that they can break street lights and knock a man down if they hit him while flying. Among the hundreds of unusual creatures, one is the locust with colors that rival the rainbow; another, the moths that rob beehives and creatures that build log houses around themselves.</p>

<p><p>The Old Homestead House Museum is a peek into the shadier side of Cripple Creek's history. The Homestead House was once the most famous brothel in Cripple Creek. Owned and operated by Pearl DeVere, the opulent parlor bustled with activity and became known for its impeccable service, high-powered customers and its glamorous madams. At a time when $3 a day was considered a good wage for a miner, Pearl charged $250 a night, and got it. Today, the Homestead House is a museum that has been lovingly restored with velvet bedspreads and handmade furniture. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days a week.</p></p>

<p>Pax Quaeritur Bello
(Let Peace be Sought through War)
– Oliver Cromwell’s personal motto

Coins, Crown & Conflict: An Exploration of Cromwell’s England explores the period from the reign of Charles I and the English Civil Wars to the first years of the restored British monarchy under Charles II, through the coins, medals, people and objects associated with Oliver Cromwell.

Oliver Cromwell has been the subject of speculation and research over the 350 years since his death. Some have praised him as a great reformer and supporter of religious freedom while others have reviled him as a ruthless tyrant. One thing we know is true – during his life (1599 – 1658) there was great change in England in religious, economic and political terms. Cromwell’s own actions and the events of his lifetime form one of the pivotal points in the history of Great Britain and her colonies.

The exhibit features the Petition Crown, one of England's most rare and valuable coins. This marks the first time the coin has been displayed in the United States. Other artifacts include Oliver Cromwell's death mask, spectacles, and gauntlets.</p>

<p>How and why did money originate? What famous ancient leaders helped define how money looked and was used – then and now? What do the words and artwork on ancient coins tell us about the people who used them – and about ourselves? Travel back in time over 2,000 years and find out.

Invented in the 7th century BC in the Kingdom of Lydia, coins replaced cows and sheep as the standard for trade. Soon hundreds of mints in ancient Greece were using dies to produce silver coins similar to our own, with mint marks and two-sided imagery. Explore the foundations of modern money with a trip to ancient Greece.

In ancient Rome, money was used to pay salaries, purchase slaves and spread propaganda. Soldiers made more than professors, a day at the coliseum was free, and emperors used coins to announce their rise to power and promote their policies and accomplishments. Enter a Roman temple and learn about life, money and mass media during history’s most famous and infamous empire.</p>

<p>The Spanish Peaks stand apart from the mass of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, near Walsenburg, Colorado. Because these twin mountains are visible far out on the plains they have served for centuries as a beacon for American Indians, Spaniards, fur trappers, traders, soldiers, and travelers. In their new publication Spanish Peaks: Land and Legends, author Conger Beasley Jr. and photographer Barbara Sparks collaborate to tell the story of these remarkable peaks, the legends they have inspired, and the people who created them. On Saturday, July 21, at 2 p.m. Beasley and Sparks will read selections from their book in an illustrated free program at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. A book sale and signing follows the presentation.</p>

<p>This year the tours include:
·	The Lowell Thomas Museum, which is offering a special guided tour of early mining artifacts, early 20th Century furnished rooms, and the doctor’s office equipment of Dr. A. C. Denman. A full-sized model of an early settler’s cabin reveals another more primitive way of living in that day.
·	The Fortune Club, a long-time favorite ice cream fountain gathering place which is presently being restored. The second floor has rooms for rent, furnished much as they were in the early 20th Century. Notice the original primitive painting and the brass sign on the double doors leading to the Ladies Room.
·	An Edwardian house, built in 1914, which features spacious rooms and a second story. It is currently being lovingly restored true to the period. The kitchen still has the original wood/coal burning stove, but is otherwise a modern dream kitchen.
·	A Victorian house whose outside architecture is completely respected. However, the interior is delightfully modern—light steams in on the open spaces. You will see how the best of both worlds can be combined.
·	A home, built next to where the Midland Terminal Railroad used to wend its way, enjoys a site punctuated by a decorative iron fence and has one of the best views in town. Edwardian accents and a large living room window mark the style of the interior rooms.

Buy your $5 ticket for the Tour at the Victor Hotel,
the Lowell Thomas Museum, the Fortune Club, and Nana’s Attic. (Children 10 and under are welcomed free.)
Proceeds will support and preserve Victor’s early 20th Century architecture.</p>

<p>ROLL 2007 picks up the pace

The Smokebrush Foundation for the Arts and freehub.us are proud to present Colorado Springs' 3rd Annual Bike Art Show. Formerly known as the All Dimensions Bicycle Art Show, the exhibit of Bicycle Art is back, now as ROLL
2007, for an extended showing of 6 weeks including two First Friday Art Walk Receptions from 5-8 pm on July 6th and August 3rd. The show runs July 6 - August 11, 2007 at Smokebrush Gallery, which is located under the
Colorado Avenue Bridge in the Depot Arts District of Colorado Springs, at 218 W. Colorado Avenue, Suite 102. For directions, go to www.smokebrush.org.
Favorite artists such as Taliah Lempert and John & Jennifer Ellis will be returning this year, and many new artists will be featured, including Canadian
Sculptor David McCelvey and local photographer Holly Conlon. Be sure not to miss the Fourth of July Bike and the Santa Claus bike, courtesy of Steve Stevens of the Colorado Bicycle History Museum in Golden, Colorado.

New for this year is the "108 Prayer Wheels for Peace" project. This community-based project began with the donation of used bicycle rims. Guided by Mary Beth Hamilton of Children's ARK, students in the nearby
town of Green Mountain Falls produced wheels with themes of peace as a art of their Spring curriculum. The remaining 30 wheels were created by local youth at the Pikes Peak Arts Festival under the direction of Amber Cote and
the kids of FutureSelf.
The wheels will be fitted into a sculptural framework crafted by Tim Eckert, who created Smokebrush's Giant Driving Toaster, and the final piece, a kinetic
sculpture celebrating art, collaboration, peace, and the environment, will be installed on the roof of Smokebrush Gallery. "108 Prayer Wheels for Peace"
will be unveiled at the July 6 opening.
The band "mumbo-jumbo" will perform on July 6 and Ray de Mers will
perform on his mandolin August 3. "mumbo-jumbo," currently on tour in NY and Washington DC, features Michelle Webb and Joe Seltzer with fusion dub jazz.
Listen online at <www.myspace.com/nobsjustmusic> Drum Academy USA returns in 2007 to present soloists, a duet and a quintet on July 6 and Aug 3.

Beverages will be provided by Bristol Brewing Company. ROLL 2007 is a
fundraising event and last year we raised $400 for Medicine Wheel Trail Group, contributing to the new Freeride Park in Red Rock Canyon State Park!

ROLL 2007 will wind down with a closing party on August 3 with popular local band Head Full of Zombies, from 9 pm - 2 am at the Ritz. ROLL 2007 will celebrate the first annual Pikes Peak Classic race, pikespeakclassic.com,
Colorado Springs' first organized Century Ride, as it closes on August 11.</p>

<p>So, you would like to see the Albertosaurus Libratus, the Bambiraptor Feinbergi, Edmontosaurus Annectens, and, of course, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, but you're far to lazy to the whole H.G. Welles thing. Let the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center do the time traveling for you. You'll see the dino-buddies mentioned above, or what's left of them, and much more.

The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Center (RMDRC) was founded in 2004 by Mike and J.J. Triebold, of Triebold Paleontology Incorporated (TPI). All of the specimens contained in our exhibits are on loan from TPI. RMDRC is located right in downtown Woodland Park, Colorado and encompasses 20,000sq. ft. of which 12,000sq. ft. is dedicated to exhibits.

RMDRC holds over 30 life sized specimens, primarily skeletons, and houses TPI operations that directly contribute to the RMDRC.

Global Business

TPI is an independent company that has been in operation since 1989. The company provides services for museums and individuals ranging from paleontological exploration, data collection, excavation, preparation, restoration, skeletal mounting, mold making and casting. Specimens and replica casts collected, prepared, and restored by TPI can be seen in museums the world over. Triebold Paleontology works with academic paleontologists to ensure the preservation of fossil specimens from North America.

Mike Triebold has been collecting fossils for more than 20 years and has been featured on The Learning Channel's "Paleoworld," the Discovery Channel's "Bone Head Detectives," Fox television specials, US News and World Report, Newsweek, National Geographic and others. Currently, Triebold Paleontology Inc. (TPI) maintains the traveling exhibit, "Savage Ancient Seas" featuring marine reptiles from Kansas.

TPI operates dig sites in South Dakota, North Dakota, Kansas and Montana. Mr. and Mrs. Triebold have been residents of Woodland Park since 1996.</p>

<p>FIDEM is celebrating its 30th Art Medal World Congress at the American Numismatic Association in Colorado Springs!

For the first time in 20 years, The International Medal Federation (FIDEM) is holding its Art Medal World Congress in the United States. FIDEM XXX will bring together over 150 of the world’s finest handheld sculpture artists for a series of lectures, workshops, receptions and other activities.

Events include a banquet at the 5-star Broadmoor Resort celebrating FIDEM’s 70th birthday, and a special reception bringing together visiting artists and the Colorado Springs art community. The ANA Money Museum is preparing an exhibit featuring 1,500 handheld sculptures from 35 countries. Edmund Moy, Director of the United States Mint, will deliver the congress’ keynote address on Sept. 19.

Colorado Springs is home to Pikes Peak and a vibrant local art scene, and serves as a fitting home for FIDEM XXX. Several activities are planned to take advantage of this picturesque location. A post-congress trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico explores the heart of American Southwestern art & culture.

For more than half a century, FIDEM has held a biennial congress and exhibition of medallic art. This year’s theme, Passages to Reconstruction, conveys a message of strength and hope following Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami that devastated South and Southeast Asia.</p>

<p>Thomas Hirschhorn-esque is the next installment in the Bad Art Night series. The artist Thomas Hirschhorn is known for his room-size installations made of tin-foil, magazines, packing tape and other non-traditional materials. Hmmm. . . those are precisely the types of materials that make a fantastic Bad Art Night. Come help create a giant installation in the painting studio next to the Gallery that knocks-off Hirschhorn's style in the worst possible way.

The Bad Art Night series is an aesthetically liberating experience where artist and non-artist alike get together to make terrible, horrible, no good, very bad art. Painting, collage, drawing, sculpture, performance, video, abstraction, figuration - no medium or genre is safe in the hands of our participants. If you feel a bit timid dipping your toe into the choppy waters of high aesthetics, fear not, Bad Art Night is all about splashing around the shallow end of the artistic pool. Come and join us for a fun filled evening. Remember, no good art is ever allowed to be made at Bad Art Night. Check your aesthetic sensibilities at the door.

Materials Fee:
$3 - GoCA Supporters, UCCS Students & Staff, Children (6-12)
$4 - Adults</p>

<p>You may not recognize the name Thomas McLaren, but if you've lived in the Pikes Peak region for any time, you surely recognize his architectural style. Most of MacLaren's work is still standing in Colorado Springs and throughout the state, including Colorado Springs City Hall, City Auditorium, Grace Episcopal Church, Sacred Heart Church, and the Orchard House at Rock Ledge Ranch. MacLaren brought artistic creativity, beauty and technological innovation to the design of public and residential buildings in Colorado Springs. From his his arrival in Colorado Springs in 1894 until his death in 1928, MacLaren defined architectural style in our City. Most of MacLaren's work is still standing in Colorado Springs and throughout the state, including Colorado Springs City Hall, City Auditorium, Grace Episcopal Church, Sacred Heart Church, and the Orchard House at Rock Ledge Ranch. Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site celebrates the life and career of noted architect Thomas MacLaren with a public exhibition of his work, as shown in stunning photos by photographer Paul Allen. The exhibit, curated in partnership with the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum is on display at the Carriage House at Rock Ledge Ranch. It inspires and gives insight into to life of a man who had an enormous and lasting impact on the City of Colorado Springs.</p>

<p>With all the excellent programming he's been doing, it's hard to believe that Gallery of Contemporary Art Director Christopher Lynn has yet to show off his curatorial skills! Well the wait is almost over, and you can get a preview taste as Lynn expounds on the artists and themes in the upcoming exhibition, Manifest: Colonial Tendencies of the West. Impress your family and amaze your friends with the insightful knowledge you will display at the opening reception - knowledge you picked up weeks earlier at the Pre-Show Appetizer.

Lynn will talk about the exhibit artists Philip Kwame Apagya, Amy Chan, Luis Gispert and Jeffrey Reed, Patti Hallock, Danny Ledonne, Louise Noguchi, and Kehinde Wiley, and how their work relates to the colonial tendencies of Western culture. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session.

Manifest: Colonial Tendencies of the West will be on view September 14 - November 17, 2007.

The Pre-Show Appetizer is open to the public</p>

<p>It's finally time to get a glimpse of GCA Director Christopher Lynn's curatorial talents with "Manifest: Colonial Tendencies of the West." The show will feature approximately thirty works by artists from around the globe who take the benign and aggressive aspects of Western colonization and makes manifest the resulting mixtures of culture, politics, and commerce.

Manifest presents work by Philip Kwame Apagya, Amy Chan, Luis Gispert and Jeffrey Reed, Patti Hallock, Danny Ledonne, Louise Noguchi, and Kehinde Wiley. The exhibition features documentary photographs of Wild West recreation villages, a film that hypes American sterotypes, paintings of franchise restaurants dropped into pastoral landscapes, a video game that deals with the Columbine Massacre, paintings and sculpture of hip-hop culture, photographs that document suburban basements, and portraits of Ghanaian citizens taken in front of backdrops depicting their dream lives filled with Western exports.</p>

<p>Get a leg up on what's going on in the wider world of visual art as The Gallery of Contemporary Art, UCCS partners with Art21 the leading contemporary art documentary series to preview the fourth season of Art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century for the Pikes Peak region.

Art21 travels across the country and abroad to film 17 contemporary artists, from painters and sculptors to photographers and filmmakers, in their own spaces and in their own words. The result is a rare opportunity for television viewers to experience first-hand the complex artistic process – from inception to finished product – behind some of today’s most thought-provoking art.

The artists profiled in the series speak directly to the audience, describing their passions, impulses and methods. Viewers are invited behind-the-scenes to see artists at work in their studios, homes, communities, and in sites as diverse as an old-growth forest near Seattle, a military base in California, a theater academy in Warsaw, and a film set, in addition to galleries and museums.

“This series not only showcases the contributions of these artists, but also transcends the everyday art experience of a museum or gallery visit,” says Susan Sollins, Executive Producer of the series. “Viewers can discover what goes on inside the minds of these dynamic and thoughtful people, and what they have to say can significantly expand our knowledge and understanding of the world.”

As in the previous three seasons of Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century, each hour-long episode of Season 4 is loosely structured around a theme that unifies the individual artists – as diverse as their mediums may be. Season 4 episodes of Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century include the themes of Ecology, Paradox, Protest, and Romance. The Gallery will premiere two of the four new episodes - one on Friday during lunch and the other Friday evening.</p>

<p>It's only fitting that the two museums that now almost touch each other - the ANA Money Museum and The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center - would host a joint event: "An International Celebration of the Arts" featuring 100 artists from 4 continents and 1,400 handheld sculptures.

The ANA Money Museum and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center will bring together the local arts community and international artists to celebrate the exhibit, "The Medal is the Message: Global Ideas in Handheld Sculpture," from 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Money Museum and the FAC.

Meet artists from around the world and see more than 1,400 examples of their artwork at the Money Museum. Enjoy wine and cheese as well as entertainment by the Colorado Springs Conservatory from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

The event then moves to the adjacent FAC. From 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. in the FAC's SaGaJi Theater, Czech artist Otakar Dusek will present the talk, "Reflections: Artistic Freedom in the Czech Republic."

A catered reception and open bar in the FAC's Art Deco Lounge follows the lecture with entertainment by the Colorado Springs Conservatory. At this time, guests can also tour the newly renovated FAC at member prices. Curators and docents will be on hand to answer questions.

An International Celebration of the Arts is hosted by the American Numismatic Association and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. The event is sponsored by the Colorado Springs Independent.</p>

<p>What is chiseled, stitched, dyed, and sanded, turned, embroidered, appliqued, and painted? It's the 22nd Annual Quilts and Fine Woodworking Exhibition at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum.

From September 1 through October 27, the finest in contemporary regional woodworking and quilting will be on display in this popular exhibit. Co-sponsored by the Colorado Quilting Council and the Friends of the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, this annual exhibition features woodwork and quilts of both abstract and traditional designs. This annual exhibition is all about color, texture, and design, and it is a favorite of the residents of the Pikes Peak Region, says Matt Mayberry, Director of the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum.

Dozens of one-of-a-kind quilts and original creations in wood fill the gallery making it awash with color and energy. Museum visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite piece. Independent professional judges review all woodworking and quilt entries for acceptance into the show. This helps to maintain the overall quality and beauty from year to year.

The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum is free and open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.</p>

<p>They say and say and say that picture is worth a thousand words, so why don't they just make a picture about it? Well, that's because there is so much science behind the art of photography that it'd be hard to do. Venture to the Museum to experience an afternoon filled with hands-on activities related to the geology and physics of photography. Additionally, Museum visitors will explore the science of art, identifying the elements of art while browsing the Museum's new photography exhibit: "Changing Mines in America."

Family Exploration Days introduce families to the myriad of educational resources available at WMMI (all programs meet State education standards), and provide another reason for families to become Museum Members! Customary Museum admissions apply to this program, and reservations are requested. Please call 719-488-0880.

Location: Just off I-25 at the Gleneagle exit, #156A. Just across from the north entrance to the U.S. Air Force Academy.</p>

<p>"A dreaded sunny day, so I'll meet you at the cemetery gates," crooned Morrissey. Now's your chance! The annual Historic Reenactment & Benefit Walking Tour at Evergreen Cemetery will take place on Saturday, September 22, 2007. Guided walking tours from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. will take you on a 1.2-mile stroll through the beautiful and historic cemetery. The last tour leaves at 12:30 p.m.

The event, sponsored by the Evergreen Cemetery Benevolent Society, will introduce you to characters of the past who helped shape Colorado Springs into what it is today. Costumed reenactors will bring to life many of the early pioneers, the famous and not so famous, who each contributed to the building of this community. They will share their stories of what it was like to live in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region 150 years ago.

The $7 admission fee (children 12 and under are free) helps fund restoration and preservation projects in the pioneer sections of Evergreen Cemetery, as well as continued restoration of the Historic Evergreen Chapel.
Evergreen Cemetery is located at 1005 S. Hancock Avenue (at the corner of Fountain & Hancock). For more information call 630-7328 or 578-6646.</p>

<p>Colorado Springs has long been a hotbed of hot air ballooning. Now you can learn about the history and adventures of this oldest form of air travel in this free, illustrated lecture. The USAFA's Head of Special Collections, Mary Elizabeth Ruwell, will introduce us to the history of ballooning using images from the internationally known Gimble Collcetion of Aeronautical History housed in the Academy's McDermott Library. Nationally recognized pioneer balloonist and Colorado Springs resident Dewey Reinhard, a founder of the local Ballon Classic, will describe his high altitude adventures and share tales form his 1977 attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a hot air balloon.</p>
