<p>Performed by three local organizations (Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, Colorado Vocal Arts Ensemble, Colorado's Classical Youth Ballet) and presented by two others (The Colorado Springs School and the Colorado College Summer Festival of the Arts)- The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore is an engaging parable of the abuse of power, the tyranny of fashion and the neglect of the artist. Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore was first perfromed in 1956 by the New York City Ballet. Intended for choral ensemble, chamber orchestra and dance, the work is rarely performed with the prescribed ballet.</p>

<p>Le Chat Lunatique plays a combination of Gypsy Swing, Western Swing, and anything else they please! Filthy, mangy jazz is their forte. The band was formed due to a shared love for the great Hot Club of France, a gypsy swing group from 1940s Paris, which included the combined genius of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. This Albuquerque-based quartet, which features CC alum Muni Kulasinghe ('97) was recently voted Best Jazz Act by the Weekly Alibi.</p>

<p>On Sunday, June 24 at 2:30 p.m., First Christian Church is presenting Drew Mays, one of those dedicated musicians called an “amateur pianist.” By day, Drew is an ophthalmologist. After work, he spends time with his wife and four children, then practices piano until midnight. The second-place winner of the 2006 Amateur Pianists International competition, Drew will play selections by Bach, Beethoven, Ravel, Schumann and Liszt. A free will offering will be taken, and all are welcome at a reception hosted by API following the concert.

Many years ago, Drew Mays received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Alabama. He studied further at the Conservatory of Music in Hanover, Germany and at the Manhattan School of Music with Nina Svetlanova. But at some point, the necessity of having a job with a substantial income and security overcame his love of music, and he changed career paths. Drew is currently an ophthalmologist sub-specializing in glaucoma, but his passion for music has led him back to the piano, which he practices diligently. He lives with his wife, Therese and four children in Birmingham, Alabama.

From May 28-June 3, he will be competing in the International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in Fort Worth, Texas. For his concert at First Christian Church on June 24, Drew will perform the Prelude and Fugue in G Major from J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier Book I, Ludwig von Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata, Maurice Ravel’s Jeux d’Eau, Robert Schumann’s Toccata, and the Mephisto Waltz by Franz Liszt.

<p>On Friday, June 22 at 7:00 p.m., First Christian Church is presenting the African Children’s Choir. Composed of children ages 7-12 from Uganda, the choir will perform folk songs and spirituals both in English and their own language, dressed in native costumes and accompanied by ethnic instruments. Come and enjoy a heart-warming encounter with the children of another culture. A free-will offering will be taken for the choir.

The African Children’s Choir features delightful African children ages 7 through 11. Many have lost one or both parents through the devastation of war, famine and disease. Their voices sing out on behalf of Africa’s 12 million AIDS orphans. They represent the future of the entire continent, demonstrating the potential to become strong leaders for a better future in their homeland. In spite of the tragedy that has marred their young lives, these musically gifted children are radiant with hope and wonderfully entertaining. They melt the hearts of audiences with their charming smiles and joyful African melodies and dance. The primary goal of the African Children’s Choir is to raise awareness of the need of destitute and orphaned children in Africa and to raise funds for continued development and support of the Choir’s relief and development programs. Once Choir members have completed a concert tour, they will return to their homelands with the support, care and education necessary for bettering their future and that of their brothers and sisters.

<p>If ever there were a symphonic event in the Pikes Peak Region NOT to be missed, this is it: The Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra presents Sergei Eisenstein's great 1925 film masterpiece, fully remastered, and projected on a giant screen above the live orchestra. The orchestra performs Dmitri Shostakovich's powerful score under the baton of Music Director Lawrence Leighton Smith.

The Soviet film documents the historic mutiny of sailors in the Czar's navy in 1905 and has served as a testament against oppression ever since. Shostakovich based his Eleventh Symphony on the same events as those in the film. A truly unique experience for music lovers, film enthusiasts, students of history, and anyone wanting an exhilarating evening of film and music. First time ever in Colorado Springs! WATCH FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS OF SPECIAL PRE-CONCERT LECTURES AND EVENTS</p>

<p>The Black Rose Acoustic Society hosts an open stage event with featured performers, The Rifters. Performances start at 7:00 p.m. with three open stage acts, each doing five songs, followed by a featured performer.

The Rifters formed in 2002 in the creative music scene of Taos, New Mexico from members of two popular bands in the area: Jim Bradley and Don Richmond of Hired Hands, plus Rod Taylor and Steve Garry of the Rounders. And just what sort of music do The Rifters play? From their self-titled first CD on Howlin’ Dog Records:

“It’s music that comes from where we come from – both from the high desert and mountain landscape of our home and from the background and experiences of our lives – sort of a laid-back high-energy gentle giant old blue-buffalo-grama-grassy, cowboy, folky, shake-a-leg with a smile sort of thing.”

For more information on playing on the open stage, contact Moira Theriault, email: openstage@blackroseacoustic.org or phone: 719-494-0666.</p>

<p>One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, this moving study of the enigmatic painter Georges Seurat won a Pulitzer Prize for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of life through art and the artist. Act one follows the inarticulate Seurat as he fights a losing battle to maintain a relationship with his mistress, Dot, as he creates his painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” amid the scorn of the artistic community. The second act takes place 100 years later, introducing us to his American descendant, also an artist, burned out and uncertain of the path he must take.

This production was specifically chosen to correspond with the Fine Arts Center Museum’s traveling exhibition Impressionist and Modern Masters from the New Orleans Museum of Art. Call the box office or visit our website for more information on this tremendous exhibit.</p>

<p><p>Based on the Academy Award winning animated feature, this stage version includes all of the wonderful characters and songs from the film, written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, the team responsible for Little Shop of Horrors, which was seen last season at the SaGaJi Theatre. There are also additional songs which were written especially for the Broadway version by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Chess, Aida). You won't want to miss this classic tale that is sure to entertain adults and children alike.</p></p>

<p>The Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce presents Little London Winds at the Soda Springs Park Pavilion from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday night. Soda Springs Park is located at the intersection of Park Street and Manitou Avenue in Manitou Springs, CO.

The Little London Winds is Colorado Springs' premier Wind Ensemble. It was established in August 1992 by a small group of musicians who wished to play quality literature and maintain a high level of performance. The idea behind the ensemble was to gather together serious amateur musicians who enjoy working toward a high standard of performance.

When the wind ensemble formed, the members wanted a name that would connect the group to the area. Back before Colorado Springs decided to use the "Springs" from Manitou Springs, the city was called Little London. Hence, the name Little London Winds was chosen based on history. The performers liked the fact that the name Little London Winds also reflected the wonderful tradition of band music founded by the British.</p>

<p>If you long for the good old days, those seemingly bygone days when your community could get together over pie and ice cream and celebrate the long and lazy days of summer, then long no more.

The Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce presents the 6th annual Pie Baking Contest and the 12th annual Ice Cream Social held in Soda Springs Park from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Little London winds will perform at the park as they have every Monday this summer, but this time you'll be able to eat pie and ice cream and talk to your Manitoid neighbors.

Contact the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce at 719-685-5089 for contest rules and entry information if you fancy yourself a pie baker and would like to participate.</p>

<p>The Pikes Peak Derby Dames present the Roller Derby Season Opening Bout between the Danger Dolls and the Candy Snipers at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium.

Watch as Snow White Trash, Fanny Fister, Brat Benatar and Count Smacula of the Danger Dolls take on Slugs-N-Kisses, Yuk Foo, Peaches & Scream and Swiss Missile of the Candy Snipers.

The Mansfields will also be performing at this bone crushing, skin tearing, eye gouging extravaganza.

Has anyone else seen that Roller Derby-ish movie with James Caan playing a futuristic Roller Derby star? I wonder if the movie portends any of the action you'll see here.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Bout starts at 7 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased at the City Auditorium and Park Paralegal, 608 S. Nevada Ave.</p>

<p>Buy some juicy Colorado Grown Melons while listening to the musical stylings of Dakota Blonde.

The Gettin' Down, Downtown summer concert sponsored by Classic Companies will be held at America the Beautiful Park. The Farm and Art Market starts at 4 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m. The music will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Both the Market and music are free.

People can enjoy shopping for locally grown produce while listening to great music. Both are free and open to the public. The market also has original unique art by juried artists. The market has fruit and vegetables grown only in Colorado. Some are organic and naturally grown and there exists a touch of the conventional. <p>Students participating in the Colorado College Summer Music Festival perform a chamber concert.

Tickets: free
This event is open to the general public.

The festival brings professional artists of rare ability and international reputations together with talented and motivated students for three weeks of intensive performance and study. Scott Yoo, conductor, Music Director, Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra; Steven Copes, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra; Jon Manasse, Principal, American Ballet Theater, Mostly Mozart, Eastman School of Music; and Phillip Ying, Ying String Quartet, Eastman School of Music are some of the members of the 2007 Festival faculty. Our faculty and their colleagues will present an acclaimed series of chamber music concerts, which give students and Colorado Springs audiences an opportunity to hear outstanding performances of the world's greatest chamber music.

The 47 advanced student musicians who attend the Festival participate in small chamber ensembles, chamber orchestra, master classes, auditioned concerto readings with the orchestra, and private lessons. The Festival student concert series presents three chamber orchestra concerts and numerous small ensemble performances, all open to the public. Students range in age from high school seniors to graduate students. </p>

<p>Don't miss this opportunity to see what may be one of the most socially important plays now touring the world. Based on the experiences of the translators at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa after the end of apartheid, "Truth in Translation" explores the possibilities of healing after a legacy of oppression and violence. "Truth" was created by Michael Lessac with music by Hugh Masekela, the most acclaimed jazz and blues musician in Africa. An extraordinary company of South African actors and musicians tells the story of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This moving and passionate experience, presented in partnership with Colorado College, will touch many current issues being faced in the world today. As one critic observed "this production will change the world."</p>
