<p>If ever there were a symphonic event in the Pikes Peak Region NOT to be missed, this is it: The Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra presents Sergei Eisenstein's great 1925 film masterpiece, fully remastered, and projected on a giant screen above the live orchestra. The orchestra performs Dmitri Shostakovich's powerful score under the baton of Music Director Lawrence Leighton Smith.

The Soviet film documents the historic mutiny of sailors in the Czar's navy in 1905 and has served as a testament against oppression ever since. Shostakovich based his Eleventh Symphony on the same events as those in the film. A truly unique experience for music lovers, film enthusiasts, students of history, and anyone wanting an exhilarating evening of film and music. First time ever in Colorado Springs! WATCH FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS OF SPECIAL PRE-CONCERT LECTURES AND EVENTS</p>

<p>What do twins, nudes, beaches and cancer have in common? They comprise the spiritual geography and internal and external forces combined in Laura Ross-Paul's paintings and prints at the Coburn Gallery on the Colorado College campus. The abstract backgrounds represent the intellectual and spiritual realm; the incisively depicted figures represent the material and scientific. Situated, but not embedded in their landscapes, Ross-Paul's figures hover between an emotional world and the real world. Her most recent body of work, simply titled Naked, was developed in response to deeply personal experiences of vulnerability and their related emotions. Exhibiting and active throughout the Pacific Northwest for over 20 years, Laura Ross-Paul is among the foremost painters of the region. Her narrative imagery is known for potent, direct emotion.</p>

Tutankhamun
Making the Mummies Dance
The Artful Tommy

One of the most prestigious minds in the art world, Dr. Hoving is a celebrated author, former head of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and passionate connoisseur of the arts. As the “inventor” of the blockbuster exhibition King Tut, he has years of experience and insight into the modern museum and will lend his profound knowledge of art to a variety of events celebrating the Fine Arts Center's new museum.

On Thursday August 2, Dr. Hoving will share his expertise and appreciation of art through tales of his escapades in the world of international art. “The Artful Tommy: Thomas Hoving, America’s Culture Scamp, Reveals How He Zig-Zagged His Way Through the Art World" promises to be both entertaining and enlightening. Lecture ticket-holders will be able to explore the new museum before the lecture begins, starting at 5 pm.

Thomas Hoving joined the Met in 1959, working in the medieval department at The Cloisters until 1965, when he became curator of the department. He left the museum in 1966 to become New York Mayor John V. Lindsay's parks commissioner, but in 1967 returned to the Met as director after the incumbent, James J. Rorimer, died suddenly. Hoving assumed the directorship on March 17, 1967 and presided over a massive expansion and renovation of the museum, successfully adding many important collections to its holdings. Hoving is the author of books on a number of art-related subjects, as well as his memoirs of his time at the Met. His titles include Making the Mummies Dance: Inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Master Pieces: The Curator's Game, False Impressions, Greatest Works of Art of Western Civilization, and Art For Dummies in the "...For Dummies" series. His newest book, The Artful Tommy, will be available during the FAC opening events.

"As director of Manhattan's Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1967 to 1977, brash, energetic Hoving transformed a stodgy, elitist institution into a bottom-line-oriented business enterprise, a modernized, expansive museum that actively engages the public."

Under Trissell's guidance, The Press became one of the finest letterpresses in the country, producing stunningly beautiful books on a variety of subjects, including "Color for the Letterpress," "Twelve Mammal Skulls," "A Selection of Poems by Helen Hunt Jackson and Emily Dickinson" and "Silence," the latter considered one of the most beautiful books ever made. Over the years The Press has published work by some of the best writers in the English language. Since Trissell's death, The Press has continued its work under the supervision of Brian Molanphy, Chris Forsythe and Colin Frazer. <p>There's always been a timeless appeal to a black-masked, swashbuckling defender of the people who can slash a Z! Celebrate the launch of All Pikes Peak Reads 2007 at a special kick-off party for all ages. This year's selection is <i>Zorro.</i>

All Pikes Peak Reads is a community-wide literary program designed to get everyone in El Paso County to read and discuss the same book. The month-long reading program fosters dialogue across social, cultural, and generational lines.

Isabel Allende's <i>Zorro</i> will be used for adult programming;<i>The Mark of Zorro</i> by Johnston McCulley will be used for school curriculum development and children's programming.

Book groups, children's programs, film screenings, and other events based on themes selected from the book will be offered at PPLD and other community sites.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, August 15th at 7:00 p.m., Palmer Lake resident David Stang will present a short documentary film and discussion on the life and work of his sister Dorothy Stang in Brazil.

Internationally renown, Sister Dorothy, born in Dayton, Ohio but a naturalized Brazilian citizen, worked as an advocate for the rural poor beginning in the early 1970's, helping peasants make a living by farming small plots and extracting forest products without deforestation. . She established 21 settlements of farmers committed to conservation farming methods on rainforest land coveted by Brazilian ranchers and loggers and sought to protect them from the criminal gangs who were after their land. Dot, as she was called by her family, friends and most locals in Brazil, is often pictured wearing a t-shirt with the slogan, "A Morte da floresta o fim da nossa vida," which is Portuguese for "The death of the forest is the end of our life." Stang, age 73, was shot by ranching land grabbers on February 12, 2005.
I don't want to flee, nor do I want to abandon the battle of these farmers who live without any protection in the forest. They have the sacrosanct right to aspire to a better life on land where they can live and work with dignity while respecting the environment.

In 2004, Sister Dorothy was named "Woman of the Year" by the state of Para for her work in the Amazon region and also received the Humanitarian of the Year award from the Brazilian Bar Association for her work helping the local rural workers.
Don't Miss Her Amazing Story!</p>

<p>Get a leg up on what's going on in the wider world of visual art as The Gallery of Contemporary Art, UCCS partners with Art21 the leading contemporary art documentary series to preview the fourth season of Art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century for the Pikes Peak region.

Art21 travels across the country and abroad to film 17 contemporary artists, from painters and sculptors to photographers and filmmakers, in their own spaces and in their own words. The result is a rare opportunity for television viewers to experience first-hand the complex artistic process – from inception to finished product – behind some of today’s most thought-provoking art.

The artists profiled in the series speak directly to the audience, describing their passions, impulses and methods. Viewers are invited behind-the-scenes to see artists at work in their studios, homes, communities, and in sites as diverse as an old-growth forest near Seattle, a military base in California, a theater academy in Warsaw, and a film set, in addition to galleries and museums.

“This series not only showcases the contributions of these artists, but also transcends the everyday art experience of a museum or gallery visit,” says Susan Sollins, Executive Producer of the series. “Viewers can discover what goes on inside the minds of these dynamic and thoughtful people, and what they have to say can significantly expand our knowledge and understanding of the world.”

As in the previous three seasons of Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century, each hour-long episode of Season 4 is loosely structured around a theme that unifies the individual artists – as diverse as their mediums may be. Season 4 episodes of Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century include the themes of Ecology, Paradox, Protest, and Romance. The Gallery will premiere two of the four new episodes - one on Friday during lunch and the other Friday evening.</p>

<p>It's only fitting that the two museums that now almost touch each other - the ANA Money Museum and The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center - would host a joint event: "An International Celebration of the Arts" featuring 100 artists from 4 continents and 1,400 handheld sculptures.

The ANA Money Museum and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center will bring together the local arts community and international artists to celebrate the exhibit, "The Medal is the Message: Global Ideas in Handheld Sculpture," from 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Money Museum and the FAC.

Meet artists from around the world and see more than 1,400 examples of their artwork at the Money Museum. Enjoy wine and cheese as well as entertainment by the Colorado Springs Conservatory from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

The event then moves to the adjacent FAC. From 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. in the FAC's SaGaJi Theater, Czech artist Otakar Dusek will present the talk, "Reflections: Artistic Freedom in the Czech Republic."

A catered reception and open bar in the FAC's Art Deco Lounge follows the lecture with entertainment by the Colorado Springs Conservatory. At this time, guests can also tour the newly renovated FAC at member prices. Curators and docents will be on hand to answer questions.

An International Celebration of the Arts is hosted by the American Numismatic Association and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. The event is sponsored by the Colorado Springs Independent.</p>

<p>"The love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth ... the only home we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need -- if only we had the eyes to see," said Edward Abbey.

William Rogers and Suzanne Jones will discuss both sides of the debate over the adequacy of our region's wilderness areas and other wildlands. Rogers is president of the Trust for Public Lands, and Jones is the Colorado-Utah regional director for The Wilderness Society. This is the first of a four-part State of the Rockies Project wilderness/wildlands speaker series. Sponsored by the Colorado College State of the Rockies Project.</p>

<p>Akira kicks off Anime Nation, presented by the Gallery of Contemporary Art and the UCCS Film Studies program. Based on the 2,182 page manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, Akira (1988) is a landmark film that blazed a trail into Western culture for modern anime. Set in 2019 in Neo-Tokyo, Akira follows a group of teenage bikers as they clash with rival gangs and eventually the military when Tetsuo, the runt of the motorcycle gang, collides with a psychically-charged child. Tetuso is whisked away by the military where he is subjected to scientific testing to release his innate psychic abilities. Tetsuo's psychic and physical powers eventually spiral out of control and it is up to Kaneda, the leader of the biker gang, to reel-in Tetsuo before Tokyo is destroyed once more.

Akira will be broken up into two parts. Part one will screen on Thursday, September 20th. Part two will screen on Thursday, September 27th.

"Easily the most breathtaking and kinetic anime ever made." - Michael Atkinson, Village Voice

"The most expensive animated feature ever made in Japan and it's easily the most impressive, as well." - Richard Harrington, Washington Post

<p>"A dreaded sunny day, so I'll meet you at the cemetery gates," crooned Morrissey. Now's your chance! The annual Historic Reenactment & Benefit Walking Tour at Evergreen Cemetery will take place on Saturday, September 22, 2007. Guided walking tours from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. will take you on a 1.2-mile stroll through the beautiful and historic cemetery. The last tour leaves at 12:30 p.m.

The event, sponsored by the Evergreen Cemetery Benevolent Society, will introduce you to characters of the past who helped shape Colorado Springs into what it is today. Costumed reenactors will bring to life many of the early pioneers, the famous and not so famous, who each contributed to the building of this community. They will share their stories of what it was like to live in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region 150 years ago.

The $7 admission fee (children 12 and under are free) helps fund restoration and preservation projects in the pioneer sections of Evergreen Cemetery, as well as continued restoration of the Historic Evergreen Chapel.
Evergreen Cemetery is located at 1005 S. Hancock Avenue (at the corner of Fountain & Hancock). For more information call 630-7328 or 578-6646.</p>

<p>Ron Jeremy, the "Porn King," and Craig Gross, the "Porn Pastor," will face off in a debate. Pornography is a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States alone, but serious discussion of the issue is rare. Is it degrading to women, or empowering? Is it an addictive and destructive habit, or a window to a fun fantasy world? In this intelligent and multi-faceted debate, all aspects of the pornography issue will be discussed and examined. Sponsored by the CC chaplains' office, CRU and Pulpit Rock Church.</p>

<p>Manitou's become even more of a cultural hub in the past few years, shirking souvenir shops for arts and crafts. It's little wonder that they're hosting events like the Second Author Fest of the Rockies on October 19 at the historic Cliff House in Manitou Springs. The event, held by the Friends of the Manitou Springs Library, is one of a series of fundraisers aimed towards preserving, restoring and building an addition to the Manitou Springs Carnegie Library.

The two-day event features over 30 Colorado authors. Among the keynote authors are Joanne Greenberg (<i>I Never Promised You a Rose Garden</i> and <i>The Monday Voices</i>) and science fiction writer Connie Willis (<i>Bellwether, Doomsday Book, Fire Watch, Lincoln's Dreams, To Say Nothing of the Dog.</i>)

In an event that promises something for everyone, participants will enjoy additional activities, including a short story/poetry contest for children and adults, an art gallery walk, poetry readings and an Author Showcase for book-signings. Tickets for the event are $5 Thursday night for a viewing of "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden" and "Q & A with Joanne Greenberg," $25 for the general sessions, $15 for Friday lunch with Joanne Greenberg, and $15 for Saturday lunch with Connie Willis.</p>

<p>A delightful, exuberant, documentary by Tobias Wendl and Nancy du Plessis about the role of photography, photographers and the art of image making in Ghana. We meet the photographers, sculptors and painters including Manifest: Colonial Tendencies of the West artist, Philip Kwame Apagya. These artists tell us in their own words about the economic, social, cultural, aesthetic, and spiritual motivations of their work. Innovation and improvisation abound, from the traveling photographer who has been making and selling his own cameras out of wood and scrap since the 1930's to the studio photographers who specialize in providing elaborate backdrops that inspire their customers poses (Apagya). Families commission life-size, lifelike, powerful sculptures of loved ones, crafted from small photographs as reference, to honor and remember the dead. Issues of gender arise when we realize all the artists and photographers are men but their customers are both men and women. The influence of American print media on local artists exists but the resulting work is so transformed in the process that the original source is almost unrecognizable.
