Some people climb Pikes Peak because it is there. Other more competitive types race up that mountain to be the fastest one to the summit. That second group of people has been racing up Pikes Peak since 1916. They include the Unsers, the Dallenbachs, Tajima and scores of other leading drivers from around the world. The race they have put on the world’s map of motor sport events is the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. On July 21st,2007, over 150 racers will vie to be king of the mountain in the 85th running of the Race to the Clouds. Pikes Peak Hill Climb is America’s second oldest race next to the Indy 500. It starts higher and higher than any other race in the world (9,400 feet to 14,110 feet). It has 156 turns and halfway up the road turns from asphalt to gravel. The Colorado Balloon Classic is one of the most visually spectacular events of the year in the entire Pkes Peak Region. Organized in 1977, it's grown to be the largest and the longest continuously running hot air balloon festival in the Rocky Mountain Region as well as the State of Colorado. It's free and it's held in Memorial Park off Pikes Peak Avenue between Hancock Ave. and Union Blvd near the shores of Prospect Lake. Mass ascensions of approximately 90 balloons are scheduled for 7 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings with a Balloon Glo (very cool-they fill and light them up from inside with the burners!) scheduled for Saturday and Sunday evenings. You’ll need to brush up on Aussie slang, because this summer’s star attraction is a flock of budgies. Budgies? Yanks over here know them better as parakeets. In the wilds of Australia budgies are everywhere. The word budgie is short for budgerigar – the indigenous green and Budgerigar birdyellow bird of Australia. And they don't occur naturally anywhere else in the world. But the “Budgie Buddies” experience is more than just seeing lots of birds. Imagine being in an indoor, walk-thru aviary surrounded by more than a hundred free-flight budgies, Australian finches and cockatiels – and having a bird or two land on your arm or shoulder to nibble on a seed stick, which will be available for $1. And making a return engagement will be the hugely popular wallabies, along with a couple of baby “joeys” that kids can meet and touch. The marsupials, a mix of Parma and Bennett wallabies, will be located in the same area as last year – across from the elephant yard. And like last year, visitors will have to stay on the pathway while the wallabies can go wherever they please, which might very well be on the sidewalk in front of you or the grass next to you! From I-25 take the Cimarron Street exit west. Cimarron Street will turn into Highway 24. After the 31st light, turn left onto Ridge Road. Red Rock Canyon will be on the south side of the street. The parking lot is located at the end of Ridge Road. THE TOUR: Red Rock Canyon Open Space consists of 789 acres of dramatic ridges and beautiful canyons located at the western edge of Colorado Springs. The site was acquired by the City of Colorado Springs in 2003; prior to that time the land was privately owned. It was the site of numerous commercial ventures that left an indelible mark on this natural scenic treasure. This 90-minute walking tour will examine the geology, paleontology, archaeology, and history of Red Rock Canyon. It will include a trip into one of the quarries that extracted the red sandstone for building materials. There will also be a discussion of planned improvements for the Open Space, efforts to protect its cultural and natural resources, and the development of interpretive signage and other materials.

If the Pikes Peak ascent and marathon are not your cup of tea, why not try this? For entry and race information visit, www.runpikespeak.com. The start is at 7 a.m. on Ruxton Avenue by the COG railway depot at an elevation of 6,570'. The race will proceed 6 miles up the Barr Trail gaining 3,630' where it will turn around at Barr Camp at 10,200'. Runners will then head back down the Barr Trail to Hydro Street where they will turn left and UP with the finish being in the pullout to the right for a total of 12 miles. The cut-off for the race is 3 hours and 30 minutes. There will be 9 aid stations located at the start/finish, 1.5/10.5 mile, 2.75/9.25 mile, 4/8 mile, and the 6 mile point at Barr Camp. The Barr Trail Mountain Race is put on by RunPikesPeak, Inc., a 501c(3) nonprofit organization. It is important to the race committee to not just put on a running event, but to stage a competitive race. We had top fields in the inaugural race and the 2001 race was even more competitive because the BTMR was designated as a selection race to pick the US World Mountain Running Team. In both 2002 and 2003 seven age-group records were set. Six records were set in 2004 and another five went down in 2005. From comp entries and hospitality for competitive runners to primes and prize money, the BTMR is doing what it takes to bring in the top competition! Just as important to the committee is what the BTMR accomplishes when it comes to giving back to the community and mountain on which we live and play! 100% of entry fees are donated to area nonprofit and/or volunteer organizations with additional money going to the High School Aid Station Challenge. In all, the BTMR has given back over $87,500 in donations with $36,000 going to area high school running programs!

ROLL 2007 picks up the pace The Smokebrush Foundation for the Arts and freehub.us are proud to present Colorado Springs' 3rd Annual Bike Art Show. Formerly known as the All Dimensions Bicycle Art Show, the exhibit of Bicycle Art is back, now as ROLL 2007, for an extended showing of 6 weeks including two First Friday Art Walk Receptions from 5-8 pm on July 6th and August 3rd. The show runs July 6 - August 11, 2007 at Smokebrush Gallery, which is located under the Colorado Avenue Bridge in the Depot Arts District of Colorado Springs, at 218 W. Colorado Avenue, Suite 102. Favorite artists such as Taliah Lempert and John & Jennifer Ellis will be returning this year, and many new artists will be featured, including Canadian Sculptor David McCelvey and local photographer Holly Conlon. New for this year is the "108 Prayer Wheels for Peace" project. This community-based project began with the donation of used bicycle rims. Guided by Mary Beth Hamilton of Children's ARK, students in the nearby town of Green Mountain Falls produced wheels with themes of peace as a art of their Spring curriculum. The remaining 30 wheels were created by local youth at the Pikes Peak Arts Festival under the direction of Amber Cote and the kids of FutureSelf. The wheels will be fitted into a sculptural framework crafted by Tim Eckert, who created Smokebrush's Giant Driving Toaster, and the final piece, a kinetic sculpture celebrating art, collaboration, peace, and the environment, will be installed on the roof of Smokebrush Gallery. "108 Prayer Wheels for Peace" will be unveiled at the July 6 opening. The band "mumbo-jumbo" will perform on July 6 and Ray de Mers will perform on his mandolin August 3. "mumbo-jumbo," currently on tour in NY and Washington DC, features Michelle Webb and Joe Seltzer with fusion dub jazz.
