Winner of seven Tony Awards, EVITA brings to life the dynamic, larger-than-life persona of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator, Juan Peron. Blessed with charisma, Eva Peron captivated a nation by championing the working class. This exuberant production creates a gripping theatrical experience and features Andrew Lloyd Webber's compelling Latin, pop, and jazz influenced score. One of the most popular collaborations between Webber and Tim Rice, this legendary musical features the memorable song "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina."

No need to stop and wonder how John Waters became mainstream. Just get yourself down to the Pikes Peak Center for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical-comedy phenomenon that takes you back to 1962 Baltimore, as 16-year-old Tracy Turnblad sets out to dance her way onto TV's most popular show. Can a big girl with big dreams-and even bigger hair!- change the world... and still have time to win the boy she loves? This mega-hit is piled bouffant-high with laughter and performance, and enough deliriously tuneful new songs to fill a nonstop platter party. It's the winner of eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. As The New York Times says, "If life were everything it should be, it would be more like Hairspray. It's irresistible!"

From the blast of the first trumpet to the last hot spotlight, it's little wonder why GYPSY reigns as one of the greatest Broadway musicals of the 20th century. The big, brassy, funny, and forgettable show with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim gloriously return to the stage. Packing a powerful wallop, GYPSY serves up one popular standard after another, like "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "You Gotta Have a Gimmick," and "Let Me Entertain You." Everyone agrees: Broadway musicals don't get much better than GYPSY.

UCCS THEATREWORKS begins its season with "Hamlet," the most universal play in the world, the play that more than any other speaks to everyone. And for the first time, our Shakespeare Festival includes another play, "Antonio's Revenge" (see separate listing for dates and times). Why? Because it's another version of "Hamlet," by a different playwright, John Marston, a kind of Elizabethan Quentin Tarantino. Performed in repertory, these two plays, written in the same year and telling much the same story, will give our audiences a unique and unprecedented opportunity of seeing "Hamlet" and its own reflection back to back. We think you'll find it most illuminating, most entertaining!

Theatreworks Director Murray Ross wasn't kidding when he likened "Antonio's Revenge" playwright John Marston, a contemporary of Shakespeare's, to Quentin Tarantino. This raucous, bloody, bawdy revenge play is to "Hamlet" what "Reservoir Dogs" is to "Bonnie and Clyde." What's exciting is that "Antonio's Revenge" plays in repertory with "Hamlet" for this season's Shakespeare Festival with the same cast and set. Though it's not for children 13 or under, adults who love "Hamlet" won't want to miss the opportunity to get a broader glimpse of the times and culture in which "Hamlet" was written. Plus, it's just plain fun.

Performed by three local organizations (Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, Colorado Vocal Arts Ensemble, Colorado's Classical Youth Ballet) and presented by two others (The Colorado Springs School and the Colorado College Summer Festival of the Arts)- The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore is an engaging parable of the abuse of power, the tyranny of fashion and the neglect of the artist. Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore was first perfromed in 1956 by the New York City Ballet. Intended for choral ensemble, chamber orchestra and dance, the work is rarely performed with the prescribed ballet.

You've seen and read "Hamlet" enough times to know that it's cultural permutations have gone so far beyond the text and the myriad interpretations and stagings of the play. But how far?

HAMLETMACHINE, a post modern ''meditation on 'Hamlet'' written by East German playwright Heiner Meuller, will take you there.

The performance will be presented as a multi-media work using video and audio as well as live actors.

"HAMLETMACHINE was written by Heiner Meuller in 1977. It is considered one of Meuller's best works. Written in 5 acts, like Hamlet, this experimental take on Shakespeare's tragedy is a mere 6 pages long and yet some productions of this play have lasted eight hours. The work addresses issues such as communism, feminism, The 1956 Hungarian Revolt, consumerism, and of course, "Hamlet".

"The shrunken head of the Hamlet tragedy" "[HAMLETMACHINE] may be read as a pamphlet against the delusions of innocence in this, our world." - Heiner Meuller

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born in Eppendorf, E Germany. Initially a journalist, he worked at the Maxim-Gorki-Theater in East Berlin (1958-9), was a playwright for the Berlin Ensemble (1970-6), and became one of its directors in 1992. A Communist, his work was influenced by Bertolt Brecht and is vigorously anti-fascist, humanist, and later also critical of the socialist regime in East Germany. He wrote plays together with his wife, Inge Meuller, and adaptations of Shakespeare and classical drama, including Philoktet, Oedipus Tyrann, Hamletmachine and Medea. One of the most significant and much-performed playwrights of the 20th-c, he was awarded the Georg-Buchner-Preis in 1985 and the Kleist Preis in 1990.

The new work from Lucidity Suitcase Intercontinental, follows two journeys. An Indian immigrant, disillusioned with the world he lives, takes off into the American West in a Winnebago, while a young man hits the road searching for his past at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. Road-side attractions and rest stops include: New Mexican pueblos, Acoma Sky City, the Wigwam Motel, Route 66, desert RV parks, ‘Ice Station Zebra’ re-runs, the Satellite Diner, the Las Vegas Casino Monorail, and Korean karaoke.

Created in the flux of a world almost irreversibly out of control, FLAMINGO/WINNEBAGO will also explore the planet’s tipping point: the US’s excessive use of energy and resources, peak oil theory, the rapidly changing weather and the Mayan calendar prediction of a transformation that will happen on December 12, 2012.

A sweeping epic about our past and the future - FLAMINGO/WINNEBAGO represents one last journey before the world changes, unrecognizably, forever. Features alumni Thaddeus Phillips, Jeremy Wilhelm, and Muni Kulasinghe.

October 12 - 28, 2007

Simultaneously poignant and funny. ... An outstanding show ... the best seen on Broadway in too long a time. - Variety.

Here is part one of Neil Simon's autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a Brooklyn teenager in 1937 living with his family in crowded, lower middle class circumstances. Eugene, the young Neil Simon, is the narrator and central character that takes us through a series of trenchant observations and insights that show his family meeting life's challenges with pride, spirit, and a marvelous sense of humor.

The New York Daily News raves that this is in many respects Neil Simon's funniest, richest and consequently the most affecting of his plays.

One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, this moving study of the enigmatic painter Georges Seurat won a Pulitzer Prize for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of life through art and the artist. Act one follows the inarticulate Seurat as he fights a losing battle to maintain a relationship with his mistress, Dot, as he creates his painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” amid the scorn of the artistic community. The second act takes place 100 years later, introducing us to his American descendant, also an artist, burned out and uncertain of the path he must take.

This production was specifically chosen to correspond with the Fine Arts Center Museum’s traveling exhibition Impressionist and Modern Masters from the New Orleans Museum of Art. Call the box office or visit our website for more information on this tremendous exhibit.

This poignant and brutal new comedy traces one woman's attempt to regain her memory while surrounded by a curio-cabinet of alarmingly bizarre characters. Every twist and turn in this funhouse plot brings Claire (a suburban housewife and mother who has a rare form of psychogenic amnesia that erases her memory whenever she goes to sleep) closer to revealing her past life and everything she thought she'd forgotten. It's one harrowing and hilarious turn after another on this roller coaster ride through the day of an amnesiac trying to decipher her fractured life. This production includes adult language and subject matter.

In old California, the masked man with cape, sword, and whip mounted his stallion Tornado to rescue many a poor native from the brutalities of the rich and powerful. But what can that clashing old fox do here and now, for a young immigrant transplanted into an alien Anglo world?

Is he still the people's champion? Surprising answers are forthcoming in the world premiere of a brand new Zorro play by a noted Latino playwright, especially commissioned for our annual collaboration with our library's All Pikes Peak Reads project.

A young man wanders into a pub on the rural coast of Ireland and tells the tale of how he killed his father with a spade. His story thrills the women of the village, especially the lovely bar-maid, Pegeen. But then his dad turns up, very much alive and the son will have to kill him all over again. This lovely wacky play caused riots in Dublin when it first premiered in 1907. Now it's a bona fide classic, but just as fresh as ever in the exuberant and talented hands of our UCCS students.

In 1949, Sayyid Qutb came from Egypt to Greeley, Colorado, to take a master's degree in education. There he found American life primitive and shocking, full of green lawns, bad hair cuts, and sorority girls.
This is the long awaited Colorado premier of this enthralling , Pulitzer-Prize winning play by John Patrick ShanleyIn that tells the story of a warm and charismatic priest at a Bronx Catholic High School who is suspected of sexual abuse by a determined nun. Shanley's play is a thrilling investigation of moral uncertainty conducted with the compelling logic of a detective mystery, and it's probably the most gripping play you'll see all year. Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for drama!

by David Sedaris
adapted by Joe Montello

A slacker gets a job as a full time elf during the Christmas season at Macy's and tells us all about it. David Sedaris' autobiographical memoir has become a new holiday classic, and for very good reason. It's fabulously funny, especially when recounted by Kelly Walters, who reprises his smash hit performance of two years ago. His elf name is Crumpet.

Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit" tells of an elegant socialite, recently married, who seeks the advice of an eccentric medium named Madame Arcati. He's hoping for help with his new book, but what he gets instead is the ghost of his former wife who turns out to be quite eager to wreck his current marriage. The resulting sex romp is the most hilarious menage-a-trois ever to grace a seance ... or a stage!

by Heather Raffo
A co-production with Curious Theatre Company.

The very wonderful Karen Slack, so sensational in las season's Syringa Tree, returns to play several Iraqi women in this play inspired by the author's 1993 return to Baghdad after the Gulf War. The women include a sexy painter, a Bedouin wife, a doctor, a mullaya, an exile and a girl. Together, as the Wall Street Journal says, they bring us "closer to the inner life of Iraq than a thousand slick-surfaced TV reports.

Inspired by several Iraqi women she encountered in Iraq after the first Gulf War in 1993, playwright Heather Raffo explores the inner life of the country around which global politics have swirled for close to 20 years. As relevant now as it was when it was written, the play follows a sexy painter, a Bedouin wife, a doctor, a mullaya, an exile and a girl whose stories penetrate beyond the sensationalistic surfaces of media hype. The very wonderful Karen Slack, so sensational in las season's Syringa Tree, returns to play the women.

A co-production with Curious Theatre Company.

Don't miss this opportunity to see what may be one of the most socially important plays now touring the world. Based on the experiences of the translators at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa after the end of apartheid, "Truth in Translation" explores the possibilities of healing after a legacy of oppression and violence. "Truth" was created by Michael Lessac with music by Hugh Masekela, the most acclaimed jazz and blues musician in Africa. An extraordinary company of South African actors and musicians tells the story of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This moving and passionate experience, presented in partnership with Colorado College, will touch many current issues being faced in the world today. As one critic observed "this production will change the world."

Daniel Beaty, international award winning artist who performed his outstanding original show, Emergence-SEE! last year, will return with a stunning new cabaret show entitled, The Broadway Songs I Love. After the glowing reception he received during the Festival last July, it was no surprise to learn Daniel's New York Public Theatre performances of Emergence-SEE! last fall earned him an OBIE for Outstanding Solo Performance, a Drama Desk Award nomination, and one of New York magazine's 2006 Culture Awards for Best in Theater.

Be ready to LAUGH! Avner the Eccentric is bringing his side-splitting humor and crazy antics to Woodland Park. Your entire family will enjoy his hilarious, take no prisoners comedy.

Avner Eisenberg studied in Paris with Jacques Lecoq, taking a year off in the middle of the two-year course to tour as a puppeteer with Vagabond Marionettes. While street performing in Paris he was once arrested for buffoonery in public. On returning to the United States Avner taught at Carlo Mazzone Clementis DellArte School of Physical Comedy in California. Avner is greatly indebted to these two men: Lecoq who taught me everything I know, and Carlo who taught me the rest. Avner is probably best known for his endearing portrayal of The Jewel, the scene-stealing holy man, in The Jewel of the Nile, co-starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

After he made his mark as a stand-up comedian, Jerry Seinfeld went on to create, write and star in one of the most successful television programs of all-time. Seinfeld was one of a handful of shows throughout history to leave an indelible mark on popular culture. By virtue of a show about "nothing," Jerry Seinfeld has carved a permanent place in contemporary society.

Seinfeld returns to his standup roots with his observational humor routines. He plays the Pikes Peak Center Saturday, August 18 at 7:00 PM.

Of all the festivals celebrated in India, Diwali is the most glamorous one. Homes are decorated with lighted lamps to create a magical atmosphere of joy and festivity. And every year, in the fall, the Indian community of Colorado Springs joins together to celebrate Diwali with songs and dances highlighting the rich cultural heritage of India. The performance features Indian classical, folk and modern dances along with beautifully performed live music covering many, many years of Indian history. These programs have been highly praised for their professional presentations and traditionally, the tickets are sold out well in advance.

Diwali celebrations in India are similar to Christmas celebrations in the USA. In the north, Diwali is celebrated for king Rama's return after his epic war with Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. In the south, legend concerns the victory of good over evil. Narakasura, the demon of hell, challenged Krishna for a battle. After a fierce fight lasting two days, the demon was killed.

"Dad is great--give us the chocolate cake!" Bill Cosby has long been the yin to Richard Pryor's yang--somone the whole family can love. His humor often centers on the basic cornerstones of our existence, seeking to provide an insight into our roles as parents, children, family members, and men and women. Without resorting to gimmickry or low-brow humor, Bill Cosby's comedy has a point of reference and respect for the trappings and traditions of the great American humorists such as Charlie Chaplin, Will Rogers, W.C. Fields and Groucho Marx.

Theatregasm promises to be "sheer unadulterated theatrical madness," or at least a close facsimile thereof. It is a collection of short, experimental, comedic, dramatic and just plain weird plays. Featuring new and old works directed by: Angela Kinnett, Jonathan Sargent, Elijah Atkins, Cyndi Parr, Jon Margheim, Tom Condas, Colin Gregory and Brian Mann.

Highlights include: Several of Michael McClure's "Gargoyle Cartoons." The strangest version of a David Mamet play ever: "Deer Dogs" as performed by puppets. A modern, and perhaps more realistic retelling of "Alice in Wonderland." "Silence," a retelling of the classical Greek myth of Hippodamia by Jonathan Sargent, and the return of the insanity that is Brian Mann's "A Very Nice Play About Love .... (Maybe)."

Profoundly intellectual? Perhaps! Truly emotional? It's sorta possible! Fantastically wondrous? Stranger things have happened! Theatregasm will be fun for everyone! Bring the kids, they might even get some of the jokes! Bring your inner punk rocker, social commentary is fun! Bring your local cheep beer lover, you won't be able to imbibe but you can pretend! Bring your boring friends who are into math and science, because these plays have nothing to do with either of those things!

Imagination Celebration is proud to present the illuminating energy of David Taylor Dance Theatre's "A Children's Rainforest Odyssey," in partnership with Colorado Springs Dance Theatre. Created from the David Taylor Dance Theatre's nationally acclaimed multi-media production of "Rainforest," this spellbinding one-hour performance will be presented at the Pikes Peak Center at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 . In addition, children and adults are invited to come as their favorite rainforest creatures and enjoy creative hands-on art experiences one hour prior to the performance.

An awe-inspiring, multi-media, contemporary dance performance specifically created for school children and families, "A Children's Rainforest Odyssey" features four major excerpts from the David Taylor Dance Theatre's (DTDT's) full-length "Rainforest" production, combined with an environmental/educational narrative. The performance takes audiences on a magical journey through different levels of life in a tropical rain forest. Combining a brilliant original musical score, evocative choreography, special lighting effects, and stunning costumes and props, "A Children's Rainforest Odyssey" has developed into one of the most popular performance programs in the company's 27-year history.

Founded by choreographer David Taylor in 1979, DTDT remains Colorado's only professional contemporary ballet company. The company tours extensively nationally and within Colorado. "Dance Magazine" has recognized DTDT nationally for its innovative staging of "The Nutcracker" (1991), the company's 1996 Spring Season, and for its acclaimed multi-media production of "Rainforest" (1997). The DTDT's full-length production of "Rainforest" has become the most successful regular-season event in the company's history. After five years of record-breaking performances in Denver, the multi-media collaborative production "took the show on the road," touring it throughout the United States.

Don't miss this awe-inspiring, multi-media, contemporary dance performance that explores the magic, mystery and fragility of South America's rain forests and the Amazon's indigenous peoples.

Tickets are only $10, $15 and $25 and may be purchased by calling 799-4139. Imagination Celebration Season Ticket Subscribers receive a 10 percent discount off these prices.

Also check the Imagination Celebration Web site at www.imaginationcelebration.org for details about its ongoing Rainforest Exhibit at Celebration Place, which runs through Oct. 5. Celebration Place is located in the upper level of The Citadel mall, in the Burlington wing.

Imagination Celebration of Colorado Springs invites families to get swept off their feet into a world of learning, literacy and laughter during its seventh spectacular season of Family Theater at the Pikes Peak Center. This year's season once again offers an affordable opportunity to enjoy delightfully entertaining, literacy-based productions performed by nationally known touring companies.

Kicking off the season is "The Brand New Kid," based on the popular children's book by Katie Couric and produced by the Kennedy Center on Tour from Washington, DC.

New teachers ... new books ... new faces! It's the very first day of second grade and Lazlo S. Gasky is the new kid in school who, well, doesn't look or speak quite like the others. This uplifting 60-minute musical teaches the important lessons of tolerance, kindness and friendship.

In addition to the performance, Imagination Celebration flings open the lobby doors one hour before showtime, offering children a chance to create their own artwork related to the show at fun, interactive hands-on art stations.

Our second stunning performance of the season is "Aesop's Fables," based on the classic stories by Aesop himself and produced by the award-winning Manitou Art Theatre.

Leap into a world where tortoises outrun hares, geese lay golden eggs and wolves dress up in sheep's clothing. The wisdom and wit of some of Aesop's best-loved fables come to life in this original and hilarious world-premiere adaptation blending breath-taking puppetry, live music and physical comedy.

Our third thrilling performance of the season is "Miss Nelson Has a Field Day," based on the book by Harry G. Allard and produced by the Omaha Theater Company for Young People.

The big football game is approaching and the situation appears to be hopeless. Even the school faculty is convinced the team will lose until Miss Nelson calls in a secret weapon: the dreaded Viola Swamp!

This is the beloved tale of the friendship of a young boy and his toy rabbit.
With his cry of "Git-R-Done!" and "Lord, I Apologize?" Larry the Cable Guy begins his daily radio commentaries in cities around the country. You might not think a cable installer could be hilariously funny - until you see Larry the Cable Guy, the church-going, strip bar-going, know-it-all comedian in theatres and arenas across the United States.

Although there's no question that Larry is opinionated, he is very likable and has repeatedly demonstrated that he has very wide appeal. His commentaries are as fresh as today's headlines.

As part of Mainfest: Colonial Tendencies of the West, Soul Mechanics (a Colorado Springs b-boy group) will present an "informance" (lecture/performance) at the Gallery of Contemporary Art. Soul Mechanics' tight breakdancing moves reveal the myriad of cultural influences that created the phenomenon in 1970's urban environments. Join us as we learn more about breakdancing, its culture, and roots.

Latin American women with chutzpah! "Tres Vidas" is a work of chamber music theatre that celebrates the life, times and work of three significant Latin and South American women: painter Frida Kahlo of Mexico, peasant activist Rufina Amaya of El Salvador and poet Alfonsina Storni of Argentina. With storylines including Frida Kahlo's dramatic and passionate relationship with painter Diego Rivera, Rufina Amaya's astounding singular survival of the massacre at El Mozote and Alfonsina Storni's lifelong challenges as Argentina's first great feminist poet, "Tres Vidas" presents dramatic situations timeless in their emotional appeal and connection to audiences across all gender and ethnic spectrums. Sponsored by SOMOS, the Venture Grant Committee, Southwest Studies, American Cultural Studies, the music, drama/dance and anthropology departments and the office of minority student life.
