<p>Comprised of images recently discovered in a lost cache of photographic negatives, this exhibition presents Muray’s portraits of the artist Frida Kahlo. Muray, whose work appeared regularly in Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair, was a personal friend of Kahlo in the 1930s and 1940s. His photographs capture the essence of Frida Kahlo, significant people in her life and her deep interest in her Mexican heritage.

<p>MARAVILLAS DE LOS TEJEDORES
WONDERS OF THE WEAVERS
Nineteenth Century Rio Grande Weavings
From the Collection of the Albuquerque Museum
Opening May 26, 2007

Hispanic weavings are the epitome of Southwestern art and culture and this summer the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum showcases the Hispanic textile tradition with Wonders of the Weavers (Maravillas de los Tejedores).

This collection of 37 Hispanic Rio Grande textiles brings together a variety of Rio Grande textile styles made between 1820 and 1900 and emphasizes weavings from the Albuquerque area, the historic center of the Rio Grande weaving industry. A Hispanic treadle loom upon which two of the featured early blankets were woven is also featured. Weaving tools including a reed, a spinning wheel bobbin, wool cards and sheep shears illustrate the tools of the early industry.

Since 1598 Spanish entradas into the Rio Grande Valley brought the first sheep into the region. They also brought professional weavers from Spain who introduced the horizontal treadle loom. Through trade, raiding, and other aspects of cultural contact between and among Spanish colonists and native people, traditional Spanish weaving tools and methods spread throughout the Southwest.

<p>“A lust for life” characterizes the work of Mary Chenoweth (1918-1999). A prolific artist working in a remarkably contemporary style for her time, Chenoweth served as Professor of Art at Colorado College for thirty-plus years. This exhibit, curated by Daisy McConnell, of Chenoweth’s work will survey both the incredible breadth of media the artist employed during her career, and explore recurrent themes within her work.
A hardworking and self-effacing artist, Chenoweth quietly built an enduring legacy that remains visible at Colorado College and within the Colorado Springs community. She is remarkable for her work ethic—she created art almost every day for 80 years—and her successful career as an exhibiting artist and Professor of Art during a time when very few women artists broke through the art world’s gender barriers.
Chenoweth’s work employed many media, from traditional Printmaking to sculpture; from collage to pen and ink drawing; from painting to artist books. Her artwork is characterized by vibrant colors, lively abstract and stylized shapes, and keen observations from the world around her.
Chenoweth traveled extensively, and evidence of her travels is apparent in her paintings, artist books, and sketch books, many of which will be on display in Coburn Gallery during this exhibit. The ports of Australia, North Africa, and the Orient, among other locales, were highly influential on her choice of colors, collage, and forms.
The exhibit will feature artwork from the Colorado College Art collection, the recently acquired Mary A. Chenoweth Collection in Tutt Library’s Special Collections, and Colorado Springs area collectors and friends of the artist. A highlight of the exhibition will be a hand-carved door recently donated by the estate of Peggy Marshall, a long-time patron and friend of the artist.
Sponsored by the Colorado College Summer Festival of the Arts.

<p>Smokebrush and www.freehub.us are proud to present ROLL, the 3rd Annual Bike Art Show. The exhibit will include works by favorite returning artists such as Taliah Lempert, Larry Diskin, and John & Jennifer Ellis, as well as many new artists, including Canadian Sculptor David McCelvey and local photographer Holly Conlon.

We will also debut 108 Medicine Wheels for Peace at the show's opening. This community-based project will center on a giant, kinetic sculpture to be installed on the roof of Smokebrush's building. Composed of donated bicycle rims that have been transformed into pieces of artwork by local artists and students from FutureSelf & the Children's ARC, the installation will celebrate art, collaboration, peace, and the environment.

Entertainment for the First Friday opening will be provided by the band mumbo-jumbo and beverages are generously provided by Bristol Brewing Company and Southwest Wine & Spirits. The event is free and open to the public, but we will take donations to raise money for the Medicine Wheel Trail Group.</p>

<p>The Pikes Peak Watercolor Society’s Watermedia XV will be on view at the Gallery of Contemporary Art. Juried by Frank Webb, a respected artist, author, and instructor, this exhibition highlights the best of aqueous media from around the world. In addition to the exhibition, an instructional workshop series will be hosted at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and taught by Frank Webb.

The Pikes Peak Watercolor Society (P.P.W.S.) was founded to promote excellence in the watercolor media and to encourage artistic achievement in the community. Their first exhibit was held at the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs in March of 1988, with a 2nd exhibit during Christmas of that same year. Today the P.P.W.S. continues to promote and encourage watercolor through its sponsorship of exhibitions, scholarships, workshops, and through its support of other local arts organizations and educational institutions.</p>

<p>The vivid shapes in Laura Ross-Pauls paintings and monotypes symbolize the point at which the internal and external forces combine. The paintings abstract backgrounds represent the intellectual and spiritual realm; the incisively depicted figures represent the material and scientific. Situated, but not embedded in their landscapes, Ross-Pauls figures hover between an emotional world and the real world. Her most recent body of work, simply titled Naked, was developed in response to deeply personal experiences of vulnerability and their related emotions. Exhibiting and active throughout the Pacific Northwest for over 20 years, Laura Ross-Paul is among the foremost painters of the region. Her narrative imagery is known for potent, direct emotion.</p>

<p>Cyberskins are technologically wired powwow garments that draw from traditional and high tech cultures.

The Cyberskins worn by performers in the Tekcno Powwow take on a new life in a gallery installation created by Bently Spang. Spang is a multi-disciplinary visual artist whose work focuses on his experience as a contemporary Cheyenne. His mixed media sculpture, video, performance, and installation pieces explore contemporary Native existence with pragmatism, humor, and deep introspection. Spang has a BA in art and business from MSU-Billings, and a MFA in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has exhibited widely in the US, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and South America.</p>

<p>Let's get this out of the way: "cyberskins" are technologically wired powwow garments that draw from traditional and high tech cultures.

Says artist Bently Spang: "The term "redskin", as Native peoples on this continent were called at one time (and which certain sports teams continue to use), emerges from a time in this country when one could collect a bounty for the skin of a dead Native person. Cyberskins, in direct contrast to this brutal act, is the act of creating a new skin. Cyberskins are technologically advanced exteriors that draw inspiration from current powwow regalia, traditional information and high tech culture to form an impenetrable shield. They are designed specifically to meet the demands of today's Native American Indian Aboriginal Indigenous Native person, as they continue to morph and grow."</p>

One of the most prestigious minds in the art world, Dr. Hoving is a celebrated author, former head of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and passionate connoisseur of the arts. As the “inventor” of the blockbuster exhibition King Tut, he has years of experience and insight into the modern museum and will lend his profound knowledge of art to a variety of events celebrating the Fine Arts Center's new museum.

On Thursday August 2, Dr. Hoving will share his expertise and appreciation of art through tales of his escapades in the world of international art. “The Artful Tommy: Thomas Hoving, America’s Culture Scamp, Reveals How He Zig-Zagged His Way Through the Art World" promises to be both entertaining and enlightening. Lecture ticket-holders will be able to explore the new museum before the lecture begins, starting at 5 pm.

Thomas Hoving joined the Met in 1959, working in the medieval department at The Cloisters until 1965, when he became curator of the department. He left the museum in 1966 to become New York Mayor John V. Lindsay's parks commissioner, but in 1967 returned to the Met as director after the incumbent, James J. Rorimer, died suddenly. Hoving assumed the directorship on March 17, 1967 and presided over a massive expansion and renovation of the museum, successfully adding many important collections to its holdings. Hoving is the author of books on a number of art-related subjects, as well as his memoirs of his time at the Met. His titles include Making the Mummies Dance: Inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Master Pieces: The Curator's Game, False Impressions, Greatest Works of Art of Western Civilization, and Art For Dummies in the "...For Dummies" series. His newest book, The Artful Tommy, will be available during the FAC opening events.

"As director of Manhattan's Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1967 to 1977, brash, energetic Hoving transformed a stodgy, elitist institution into a bottom-line-oriented business enterprise, a modernized, expansive museum that actively engages the public."

<p>This is your chance to see what High School kids from all over the country have created this summer at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Summer Art Program at Packard Hall on the Colorado College campus.

Exhibition from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Summer Seminar, is a scholarship program, available nationally to artistically gifted high school juniors (2006-07) in public and private schools. The Summer Seminar, held on the campus of The Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colorado, is designed as an art institute offering an intensive visual art studio program for the students.

This program allows each student to gain a stronger foundation of skills and understanding in the visual arts through experiencing college-level drawing and painting classes in a group setting. Artists-in-residence serve as the primary instructors. The artists provide instruction, giving specific problems to solve and assignments to complete.</p>

<p>The Business of Art Center in collaboration with Accent Photo Imaging, are seeking Colorado Artists to exhibit in a special digital output exhibition in the BAC's Spencer Hall gallery. This unique exhibition project, entitled Pret-a-Giclee, is designed to exemplify the advantages of and utilize archival digital output for any 2-D art form. The term Giclee is a French word referring to spraying. A Giclee print, simply put, is a fine, archival ink jet print. The term Pret-a-Giclee is a play on the fashion term pret-a-porter, meaning ready-to-wear. Pret-a-Giclee therefore, means Ready-to-Spray!

This call is open to all residents of Colorado. Any artwork in 2-D media that will be output to archival digital form for this exhibition. Artwork must be for sale. work previously shown in any of the BAC galleries may not be submitted. Artists are required to sign Loan and Terms & Condition Agreements if accepted. The BAC reserves the right to reproduce artists' images for all media and publicity purposes. Applicants need not be members of the BAC to submit.

For more information, visit www.thebac.org, or call 719-685-1861.</p>

<p>Matthew Crawford and Caron O’Neil, featured artists

In a departure from his usual work, Matthew will explore the beauty of imperfect materials in the show Diamonds and Rust. He will incorporate rusted steel, diamonds, and textured/unpolished gold to create ornament from what would otherwise be considered unusable material.
Most pieces will be small jewelry items, however some will incorporate small pedestals, so that the wearable portion may be displayed as part of a unified sculptural work.

Caron O’Neil, with her fun imagination, finds disgarded items both man-made and natural for her mixed media sculpture and jewelry, bringing life and creativity back into things once lost or forgotten. Caron likes to call her work echo art.

Please join us for an opening reception on Friday, July 20, 2007 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Commonwheel Gallery.</p>

<p>ROLL 2007 picks up the pace

The Smokebrush Foundation for the Arts and freehub.us are proud to present Colorado Springs' 3rd Annual Bike Art Show. Formerly known as the All Dimensions Bicycle Art Show, the exhibit of Bicycle Art is back, now as ROLL
2007, for an extended showing of 6 weeks including two First Friday Art Walk Receptions from 5-8 pm on July 6th and August 3rd. The show runs July 6 - August 11, 2007 at Smokebrush Gallery, which is located under the
Colorado Avenue Bridge in the Depot Arts District of Colorado Springs, at 218 W. Colorado Avenue, Suite 102. For directions, go to www.smokebrush.org.
Favorite artists such as Taliah Lempert and John & Jennifer Ellis will be returning this year, and many new artists will be featured, including Canadian
Sculptor David McCelvey and local photographer Holly Conlon. Be sure not to miss the Fourth of July Bike and the Santa Claus bike, courtesy of Steve Stevens of the Colorado Bicycle History Museum in Golden, Colorado.

New for this year is the "108 Prayer Wheels for Peace" project. This community-based project began with the donation of used bicycle rims. Guided by Mary Beth Hamilton of Children's ARK, students in the nearby
town of Green Mountain Falls produced wheels with themes of peace as a art of their Spring curriculum. The remaining 30 wheels were created by local youth at the Pikes Peak Arts Festival under the direction of Amber Cote and
the kids of FutureSelf.
The wheels will be fitted into a sculptural framework crafted by Tim Eckert, who created Smokebrush's Giant Driving Toaster, and the final piece, a kinetic
sculpture celebrating art, collaboration, peace, and the environment, will be installed on the roof of Smokebrush Gallery. "108 Prayer Wheels for Peace"
will be unveiled at the July 6 opening.
The band "mumbo-jumbo" will perform on July 6 and Ray de Mers will
perform on his mandolin August 3. "mumbo-jumbo," currently on tour in NY and Washington DC, features Michelle Webb and Joe Seltzer with fusion dub jazz.
Listen online at <www.myspace.com/nobsjustmusic> Drum Academy USA returns in 2007 to present soloists, a duet and a quintet on July 6 and Aug 3.

Beverages will be provided by Bristol Brewing Company. ROLL 2007 is a
fundraising event and last year we raised $400 for Medicine Wheel Trail Group, contributing to the new Freeride Park in Red Rock Canyon State Park!

ROLL 2007 will wind down with a closing party on August 3 with popular local band Head Full of Zombies, from 9 pm - 2 am at the Ritz. ROLL 2007 will celebrate the first annual Pikes Peak Classic race, pikespeakclassic.com,
Colorado Springs' first organized Century Ride, as it closes on August 11.</p>

<p>FIDEM is celebrating its 30th Art Medal World Congress at the American Numismatic Association in Colorado Springs!

For the first time in 20 years, The International Medal Federation (FIDEM) is holding its Art Medal World Congress in the United States. FIDEM XXX will bring together over 150 of the world’s finest handheld sculpture artists for a series of lectures, workshops, receptions and other activities.

Events include a banquet at the 5-star Broadmoor Resort celebrating FIDEM’s 70th birthday, and a special reception bringing together visiting artists and the Colorado Springs art community. The ANA Money Museum is preparing an exhibit featuring 1,500 handheld sculptures from 35 countries. Edmund Moy, Director of the United States Mint, will deliver the congress’ keynote address on Sept. 19.

Colorado Springs is home to Pikes Peak and a vibrant local art scene, and serves as a fitting home for FIDEM XXX. Several activities are planned to take advantage of this picturesque location. A post-congress trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico explores the heart of American Southwestern art & culture.

For more than half a century, FIDEM has held a biennial congress and exhibition of medallic art. This year’s theme, Passages to Reconstruction, conveys a message of strength and hope following Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami that devastated South and Southeast Asia.</p>

<p>Thomas Hirschhorn-esque is the next installment in the Bad Art Night series. The artist Thomas Hirschhorn is known for his room-size installations made of tin-foil, magazines, packing tape and other non-traditional materials. Hmmm. . . those are precisely the types of materials that make a fantastic Bad Art Night. Come help create a giant installation in the painting studio next to the Gallery that knocks-off Hirschhorn's style in the worst possible way.

The Bad Art Night series is an aesthetically liberating experience where artist and non-artist alike get together to make terrible, horrible, no good, very bad art. Painting, collage, drawing, sculpture, performance, video, abstraction, figuration - no medium or genre is safe in the hands of our participants. If you feel a bit timid dipping your toe into the choppy waters of high aesthetics, fear not, Bad Art Night is all about splashing around the shallow end of the artistic pool. Come and join us for a fun filled evening. Remember, no good art is ever allowed to be made at Bad Art Night. Check your aesthetic sensibilities at the door.

Materials Fee:
$3 - GoCA Supporters, UCCS Students & Staff, Children (6-12)
$4 - Adults</p>

<p>Did you catch the buzz after last year's groundbreaking FLAUNT: Fashion Under the Bridge event?

Last year's fundraiser, which rocked over 300 people with edgy fashion, art and entertainment, was named "Best New Event" by the Gazette and "Best Use of an Unconventional Space" by The Independent.
This year, FLAUNT will again raise the bar for Springs' events. This benefit raises funds for the dynamic organization FutureSelf: Youth Discovering Success Through Art.
This year's "cirque" theme will combine music and dance performances in collaboration with Idoru's high energy, progressive fashion show - more like theatre, less like a boring fundraiser! There will be food, beer and wine, and a sculpture garden including art from the youth participating in FutureSelf. The fun will continue into the night with a private V.I.P. after-party at a hip, downtown Colorado Springs nightclub.
Ticket prices are $30 for General Admission and $60 for a VIP pass. Tickets will be available at Idoru (218 N. Tejon, Ste. 100), at two Toni and Guy locations (750 Citadel Dr E # 2292 & 1710 Briargate Blvd #143), and at www.flauntfashionunderthebridge.com
This year's sponsors include Samuel Adams, Toni and Guy Salon, American National Bank, The Gazette, Manitou Arts Theater, Sonterra Grill, & Nosh.

FutureSelf provides under-served, low-income youth ages 12 - 19 in the Pikes Peak region with arts-based workshops, exhibition, and performance opportunities. Young people experience connectedness, self-expression and success, and this results in increased self-efficacy, improved academic performance and hope for the future. For more information about FutureSelf, visit their website at: www.futureself.org</p>

<p>What's the function of art in Society? Can art save the world? Come gather at Venue 515 on The Business of Art Center campus every Wednesday night from 6 to 8 PM as we attempt to uncover the truth about art and its place in the world. What are the spiritual benefits, if any, to art? How has religion influenced art and vice-versa? All religious practices and artistic disciplines are respected. Everyone is welcome. The idea is to build community through dialogue. This is a structured discourse with a different facilitator each week. The discussion group will also have guest speakers, occasional movies and critiquing sessions. Bring your art, your thoughts, and your ideas. Let's talk about it.</p>

<p>Myra Epstein has been painting in Los Angeles since 1982. She received her formal art education at Hornsey College of Art in London, England. Her work is distinct in her use of vibrant color. Her still life collections range from reflections on the English countryside to the ethnic diversity of Southern California. Myra states, “I love painting still lifes because they allow me to put together objets d’art that especially appeal to me in any variation I choose. I am fascinated by the way the still life genre draws upon social and cultural history.”</p>

Road Tested will exhibit in the BAC's Hagnauer Gallery, August 3 - September 15, 2007. This exhibition will open to the public with a reception on Friday, August 3, 5-8pm. Artists will be in attendance. The opening reception hours will be extended until 8pm for this event as a part of the First Friday community art opening events. A shuttle service from the downtown Art Mill area (Smokebrush Gallery) will serve the Old Colorado City art district and Manitou Springs on this evening.</p>

<p>The Gallery of Contemporary Art, UCCS and the Smokebrush Foundation for the Arts present the second installment of The Incubator Series, a quarterly panel discussion with visual arts professionals, practitioners, and advocates about their vision for the Pikes Peak region community.

Each Incubator panel discussion will be held quarterly with a different group of arts advocates: directors/curators, artists, art critics/media/publishers, and art collectors. The public is invited to attend and join the discussion. The panel discussions will attempt to make the Pikes Peak region art scene more transparent for the public to encourage dialogue, participation, and camaraderie. The public will be able to meet their local museum/gallery directors, art writers, artists, publishers, and collectors face-to-face and join with them in making the region a more artistically active place to live and work.

This is the second installation of the Incubator series and features members of the media and publishing arenas of the Pikes Peak region. Each will address his/her institutions mission and role in the community followed by a panel discussion and then Q&A from the audience. The panelists are as follows:

    * Mark Arnest: Arts Writer, The Gazette; Musician
    * Noel Black: Publisher, Newspeak and Newspeakblog.com
    * Kirk Woundy: Managing Editor, The Independent
    * Don Goede: Creative Director, Smokemuse (COS); Co-Founder, Soft Skull Press (NYC)
    * Klayton Elliot Kendall: Executive Producer, Springs Culture Cast
    * Eve Tilley: Columnist, Springs Magazine; President of Pikes Peak Arts Council

The panel will be moderated by Christopher Lynn, Director of the Gallery of Contemporary Art, UCCS.

The Incubator Series 2: Media / Publishing is FREE and open to the public.

This event is sponsored in part by the Gazette.</p>

Most of MacLaren's work is still standing in Colorado Springs and throughout the state, including Colorado Springs City Hall, City Auditorium, Grace Episcopal Church, Sacred Heart Church, and the Orchard House at Rock Ledge Ranch. MacLaren brought artistic creativity, beauty and technological innovation to the design of public and residential buildings in Colorado Springs. From his his arrival in Colorado Springs in 1894 until his death in 1928, MacLaren defined architectural style in our City. Most of MacLaren's work is still standing in Colorado Springs and throughout the state, including Colorado Springs City Hall, City Auditorium, Grace Episcopal Church, Sacred Heart Church, and the Orchard House at Rock Ledge Ranch. Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site celebrates the life and career of noted architect Thomas MacLaren with a public exhibition of his work, as shown in stunning photos by photographer Paul Allen. The exhibit, curated in partnership with the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum is on display at the Carriage House at Rock Ledge Ranch.
