An HO scale modular railroad – the Colorado East Central Railway – will be operating and running from open to close during Territory Days, May 25th to 27th at the Old Colorado City History Center
This portable layout is 28 feet long and will fill the main display area of the museum
In the spirit of Territory Days and early Colorado City, some model Colorado Midland steam locomotives will be pulling both passenger and freight trains The display will also include freight and passenger trains of the 1920's to 1950's pulled by Santa Fe, Rio Grande, and Union Pacific steam locomotives This would include the smaller lighter steam engines of the early years to the mighty Challenger and Mountain types needed for the long freight trains of the 40's and 50's
The diesel years, from the 1950’s to the present, will also be operating Like the steam engines, they were promptly put to work in both passenger and freight service
Chris Fox, model railroader and chief engineer, built the CEC layout in 2010 He has been modeling trains for 53 years and has been a member of several public and private model train groups

This year marks the 50th Annual Pikes Peak Gem & Mineral Show, and it will be an eventful weekend! Produced by the museum’s partners from the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society, and supported by the Colorado Meteorite Society, the event centers around meteorites (extraterrestrial rocks) that have CRASHED into our planet from outer space!

This event will feature the largest exhibit of meteorites ever assembled in Colorado and will include: A “Hammerstone” that traveled through space to crash through a garage roof in Canyon City, CO - terrifying the only one home on that night in 1973: Little Misty the cat! Fragments of the meteorite that created four huge explosions, and rudely interrupted a funeral in 1924 near Johnstown, CO - nearly scaring 200 mourners to death! Meteorites that have been proven to be from the Moon and event Mars! And…for the first time on exhibit in Colorado, you will see meteorite stones from the fireball that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in February of 2013!

But wait…this adventure doesn’t stop at meteorites You can also shop! We will have over 25 vendors with gemstones, jewelry, and minerals to get your rock collection stared The Gold Prospectors of Colorado will teach you how to gold pan and you can “Keep All You Find!”

Finally, the Mining Museum will operate all of its spectacular equipment: steam engines, air trammers, steam shovel, and the truly unique, rumbling, thundering and shaking - 1890’s Yellow Jacket Stamp Mill Gold and Silver Refinery!

Food and refreshments will be available on site

Let’s face it: Bartering is no picnic Once humans realized a medium of exchange might be useful in figuring out how much an ax was worth compared to a cow, money has made the world go ‘round

Visitors to the American Numismatic Association’s Money Museum can see the many different forms, shapes and uses money has taken in the past 10,000 years in a new exhibit, “History of Money”

“History of Money” poses the question: What qualifies as money? In essence, money is anything people will accept as payment in exchange for goods and services From there, the exhibit traces money’s earliest origins and highlights money’s evolution across the ages – from cowrie shells to credit cards and beyond

See “History of Money” for free during an opening reception on April 26 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Money Museum One lucky visitor will win a 2,000-year-old ancient coin during the opening Visitors can take home a special National Coin Week medallette made in the museum’s Mini-Mint

“History of Money” is a permanent exhibit in the museum’s lower gallery Sections of the exhibit displays will change on a regular basis to highlight historically important items from the museum’s 275,000 piece collection
