In this two-day workshop we will explore the fundamentals of typography and letterpress printing The first day will cover the basics of composition and setting metal type by hand The second day will be spent printing a collaborative, multiple color type specimen broadside

Students at The Press learn to design books and broadsides, make polymer plates from photographs, set type, print on the letterpress, and bind books The Press also creates "keepsake" broadsides and books for events connected to visiting writers and lecturers, including work by figures like Seamus Heaney, Richard Wilbur, Billy Collins, David Quammen, and Darren Wershler
The number of participants for this class is limited to 10

This class will look at various versions of Charlotte Bronte’s classic novel Jane Eyre (1848) We will identify some key themes and features of the novel, and ask how they translate into film Why has this novel been filmed so many times? Are there inherent limitations to this process? Why is it so difficult for films to give us the “plain Jane” that Bronte described? We’ll talk about novel form, film form, and Victorian feminism too We’ll look at examples from various film adaptations, from Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine in 1944, to Zeffirelli’s 1996 film with William Hurt And of course there are the various BBC television serials Just to let you know, Professor Butte's favorite is George C Scott and Susannah York (1970; it’s a little hard to find) Finally, what do we learn about Bronte’s great story? We'll end class with a British High Tea
George Butte has taught in the English department at Colorado College since 1974 He specializes in the 18th and 19th century British novel, and teaches many film theory courses, with special interests in Hitchcock and film comedy His most recent book is “I Know That You Know That I Know: Narrating Subjects from Moll Flanders to Marnie” (Ohio State Press, 2004) Professor Butte received his PhD from Johns Hopkins University He was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow from 1967-1968 and Rhodes Scholar from 1968-1970

“We may feel bitterly how little our poems can do in the face of seemingly out of control technological power and seemingly limitless corporate greed, yet it has always been true that poetry can break isolation, show us to ourselves when we are outlawed or made invisible, remind us of beauty where no beauty seems possible, remind us of kinship where all is represented as separation"

Adrienne Rich
In this one-day workshop we will explore the power of poetry Through exercises designed to uncover our most compelling material and through discussion of technique in writing, we will cultivate the ability to write poetry that has the power to connect us with ourselves and with others
Through our own writing and through reading the work of contemporary poets, we will also investigate the power of poetry to bring pleasure, to transform experience, and to enlarge our understanding of one another
No prior writing experience or knowledge of poetry is necessary The number of students for this class is limited to 12
“I know nothing in the world that has as much power as a word Sometimes I write one, and I look at it, until it begins to shine”

Emily Dickinson

The creative nonfiction writer — whether a journalist, an essayist, or a memoirist — doesn't merely do the research on a subject and put it all down on the page At the heart of good creative nonfiction is the spirit of discovery Opening up complexity in the act of writing Accepting the possibility of a new narrative that has previously gone unrecognized At the heart of this process lie curiosity, honesty and compassion partnered with a deep hunger to pursue the hidden parts of a true story and an understanding of the fundamentals of good storytelling In this one-day session, we will explore examples of memoir, personal essay and literary journalism in which creative nonfiction writers take the creative aspect seriously We will discuss aspects of craft that elevate these works and the writers' openness to discovery And we will do writing exercises that encourage the creative process of pushing past surface truths to deeper meaning in our own work The instructor will provide reading materials
The number of participants for this class is limited to 18
