<p>The first Native American newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix, was published from 1828 to 1834 in what is today northern Georgia. Newspaper articles were printed in English and in Cherokee using the Sequoyan syllabary. While the Phoenix is a prized asset to any library, scholarship describing the newspaper's print shop is scarce. Frank Brannon's research regarding the Phoenix explores three primary items used in printing the newspaper: the metal printing type, the press and the paper used in printing. Brannon will present his research on the Phoenix print shop and the Cherokee syllabary. A special focus of the talk will be a description of the limited edition monograph produced from the research, which was printed in traditional letterpress manner with handmade paper and bound in a style evocative of early 19th-century bindings west of the Appalachians. Visit Brannon's Web site at www.speakeasypress.com. An exhibit of Brannon's work will be in Tutt Library from June 25-July 13.

<p>The Press at Colorado College, founded by Jim Trissell in 1978, is a letterpress dedicated to the art of making limited edition books and broadsides. Under Trissell's guidance, The Press became one of the finest letterpresses in the country, producing stunningly beautiful books on a variety of subjects, including "Color for the Letterpress," "Twelve Mammal Skulls," "A Selection of Poems by Helen Hunt Jackson and Emily Dickinson" and "Silence," the latter considered one of the most beautiful books ever made. Over the years The Press has published work by some of the best writers in the English language. Since Trissell's death, The Press has continued its work under the supervision of Brian Molanphy, Chris Forsythe and Colin Frazer. From its inception, The Press has served as a classroom for students interested in book arts and literature.

<p>The Spanish Peaks stand apart from the mass of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, near Walsenburg, Colorado. Because these twin mountains are visible far out on the plains they have served for centuries as a beacon for American Indians, Spaniards, fur trappers, traders, soldiers, and travelers. In their new publication Spanish Peaks: Land and Legends, author Conger Beasley Jr. and photographer Barbara Sparks collaborate to tell the story of these remarkable peaks, the legends they have inspired, and the people who created them. On Saturday, July 21, at 2 p.m. Beasley and Sparks will read selections from their book in an illustrated free program at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. A book sale and signing follows the presentation.</p>

<p>So, you would like to see the Albertosaurus Libratus, the Bambiraptor Feinbergi, Edmontosaurus Annectens, and, of course, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, but you're far to lazy to the whole H.G. Welles thing. Let the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center do the time traveling for you. You'll see the dino-buddies mentioned above, or what's left of them, and much more.

The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Center (RMDRC) was founded in 2004 by Mike and J.J. Triebold, of Triebold Paleontology Incorporated (TPI). All of the specimens contained in our exhibits are on loan from TPI. RMDRC is located right in downtown Woodland Park, Colorado and encompasses 20,000sq. ft. of which 12,000sq. ft. is dedicated to exhibits.

RMDRC holds over 30 life sized specimens, primarily skeletons, and houses TPI operations that directly contribute to the RMDRC.

Global Business

TPI is an independent company that has been in operation since 1989. The company provides services for museums and individuals ranging from paleontological exploration, data collection, excavation, preparation, restoration, skeletal mounting, mold making and casting. Specimens and replica casts collected, prepared, and restored by TPI can be seen in museums the world over. Triebold Paleontology works with academic paleontologists to ensure the preservation of fossil specimens from North America.

Mike Triebold has been collecting fossils for more than 20 years and has been featured on The Learning Channel's "Paleoworld," the Discovery Channel's "Bone Head Detectives," Fox television specials, US News and World Report, Newsweek, National Geographic and others. Currently, Triebold Paleontology Inc. (TPI) maintains the traveling exhibit, "Savage Ancient Seas" featuring marine reptiles from Kansas.

TPI operates dig sites in South Dakota, North Dakota, Kansas and Montana. Mr. and Mrs. Triebold have been residents of Woodland Park since 1996.</p>

<p>FIDEM is celebrating its 30th Art Medal World Congress at the American Numismatic Association in Colorado Springs!

For the first time in 20 years, The International Medal Federation (FIDEM) is holding its Art Medal World Congress in the United States. FIDEM XXX will bring together over 150 of the world’s finest handheld sculpture artists for a series of lectures, workshops, receptions and other activities.

Events include a banquet at the 5-star Broadmoor Resort celebrating FIDEM’s 70th birthday, and a special reception bringing together visiting artists and the Colorado Springs art community. The ANA Money Museum is preparing an exhibit featuring 1,500 handheld sculptures from 35 countries. Edmund Moy, Director of the United States Mint, will deliver the congress’ keynote address on Sept. 19.

Colorado Springs is home to Pikes Peak and a vibrant local art scene, and serves as a fitting home for FIDEM XXX. Several activities are planned to take advantage of this picturesque location. A post-congress trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico explores the heart of American Southwestern art & culture.

For more than half a century, FIDEM has held a biennial congress and exhibition of medallic art. This year’s theme, Passages to Reconstruction, conveys a message of strength and hope following Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami that devastated South and Southeast Asia.</p>

<p>Thomas Hirschhorn-esque is the next installment in the Bad Art Night series. The artist Thomas Hirschhorn is known for his room-size installations made of tin-foil, magazines, packing tape and other non-traditional materials. Hmmm. . . those are precisely the types of materials that make a fantastic Bad Art Night. Come help create a giant installation in the painting studio next to the Gallery that knocks-off Hirschhorn's style in the worst possible way.

The Bad Art Night series is an aesthetically liberating experience where artist and non-artist alike get together to make terrible, horrible, no good, very bad art. Painting, collage, drawing, sculpture, performance, video, abstraction, figuration - no medium or genre is safe in the hands of our participants. If you feel a bit timid dipping your toe into the choppy waters of high aesthetics, fear not, Bad Art Night is all about splashing around the shallow end of the artistic pool. Come and join us for a fun filled evening. Remember, no good art is ever allowed to be made at Bad Art Night. Check your aesthetic sensibilities at the door.

Materials Fee:
$3 - GoCA Supporters, UCCS Students & Staff, Children (6-12)
$4 - Adults</p>

<p>What's the function of art in Society? Can art save the world? Come gather at Venue 515 on The Business of Art Center campus every Wednesday night from 6 to 8 PM as we attempt to uncover the truth about art and its place in the world. What are the spiritual benefits, if any, to art? How has religion influenced art and vice-versa? All religious practices and artistic disciplines are respected. Everyone is welcome. The idea is to build community through dialogue. This is a structured discourse with a different facilitator each week. The discussion group will also have guest speakers, occasional movies and critiquing sessions. Bring your art, your thoughts, and your ideas. Let's talk about it.</p>

<p>The Gallery of Contemporary Art, UCCS and the Smokebrush Foundation for the Arts present the second installment of The Incubator Series, a quarterly panel discussion with visual arts professionals, practitioners, and advocates about their vision for the Pikes Peak region community.

Each Incubator panel discussion will be held quarterly with a different group of arts advocates: directors/curators, artists, art critics/media/publishers, and art collectors. The public is invited to attend and join the discussion. The panel discussions will attempt to make the Pikes Peak region art scene more transparent for the public to encourage dialogue, participation, and camaraderie. The public will be able to meet their local museum/gallery directors, art writers, artists, publishers, and collectors face-to-face and join with them in making the region a more artistically active place to live and work.

This is the second installation of the Incubator series and features members of the media and publishing arenas of the Pikes Peak region. Each will address his/her institutions mission and role in the community followed by a panel discussion and then Q&A from the audience. The panelists are as follows:

    * Mark Arnest: Arts Writer, The Gazette; Musician
    * Noel Black: Publisher, Newspeak and Newspeakblog.com
    * Kirk Woundy: Managing Editor, The Independent
    * Don Goede: Creative Director, Smokemuse (COS); Co-Founder, Soft Skull Press (NYC)
    * Klayton Elliot Kendall: Executive Producer, Springs Culture Cast
    * Eve Tilley: Columnist, Springs Magazine; President of Pikes Peak Arts Council

The panel will be moderated by Christopher Lynn, Director of the Gallery of Contemporary Art, UCCS.

The Incubator Series 2: Media / Publishing is FREE and open to the public.

This event is sponsored in part by the Gazette.</p>

<p>With all the excellent programming he's been doing, it's hard to believe that Gallery of Contemporary Art Director Christopher Lynn has yet to show off his curatorial skills! Well the wait is almost over, and you can get a preview taste as Lynn expounds on the artists and themes in the upcoming exhibition, Manifest: Colonial Tendencies of the West. Impress your family and amaze your friends with the insightful knowledge you will display at the opening reception - knowledge you picked up weeks earlier at the Pre-Show Appetizer.

Lynn will talk about the exhibit artists Philip Kwame Apagya, Amy Chan, Luis Gispert and Jeffrey Reed, Patti Hallock, Danny Ledonne, Louise Noguchi, and Kehinde Wiley, and how their work relates to the colonial tendencies of Western culture. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session.

Manifest: Colonial Tendencies of the West will be on view September 14 - November 17, 2007.

The Pre-Show Appetizer is open to the public</p>

<p>On Wednesday, August 15th at 7:00 p.m., Palmer Lake resident David Stang will present a short documentary film and discussion on the life and work of his sister Dorothy Stang in Brazil.

Internationally renown, Sister Dorothy, born in Dayton, Ohio but a naturalized Brazilian citizen, worked as an advocate for the rural poor beginning in the early 1970's, helping peasants make a living by farming small plots and extracting forest products without deforestation. . She established 21 settlements of farmers committed to conservation farming methods on rainforest land coveted by Brazilian ranchers and loggers and sought to protect them from the criminal gangs who were after their land. Dot, as she was called by her family, friends and most locals in Brazil, is often pictured wearing a t-shirt with the slogan, "A Morte da floresta o fim da nossa vida," which is Portuguese for "The death of the forest is the end of our life." Stang, age 73, was shot by ranching land grabbers on February 12, 2005.
I don't want to flee, nor do I want to abandon the battle of these farmers who live without any protection in the forest. They have the sacrosanct right to aspire to a better life on land where they can live and work with dignity while respecting the environment.

In 2004, Sister Dorothy was named "Woman of the Year" by the state of Para for her work in the Amazon region and also received the Humanitarian of the Year award from the Brazilian Bar Association for her work helping the local rural workers.
Don't Miss Her Amazing Story!</p>

The listener will be astonished to hear the extraordinary emotional range, unexpected virtuosity, and witty remarks in this rare opportunity to attend a classical tenor saxophone concert. Joined by longtime partner, pianist Michael Baron, this will be an event not soon forgotten.

Mr. Houlik's pioneering efforts on behalf of the tenor saxophone have resulted in the composition of more than eighty new concert works for the instrument, and important performances around the world. <p>The Rocky Mountain Music Association is pleased to welcome back the wonderful soprano Jeanie Darnell who together with pianist, Michael Baron presented such a moving recital on our series last season. This season Dr. Darnell and Dr. Baron will be presenting a highly unusual program that is sure to capture the interest of all music lovers. The program will consist of pieces chosen from the great repertoire of song and opera presented in their original form followed immediately by Michael Baron presenting the same piece in a version for solo piano as arranged by Franz Liszt and other great masters of the piano in highly ornamented and virtuoso versions. Commentary will be given on the pieces and the circumstances surrounding their arrangements. A unique concert not to be missed!</p>

<p>Get a leg up on what's going on in the wider world of visual art as The Gallery of Contemporary Art, UCCS partners with Art21 the leading contemporary art documentary series to preview the fourth season of Art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century for the Pikes Peak region.

Art21 travels across the country and abroad to film 17 contemporary artists, from painters and sculptors to photographers and filmmakers, in their own spaces and in their own words. The result is a rare opportunity for television viewers to experience first-hand the complex artistic process – from inception to finished product – behind some of today’s most thought-provoking art.

The artists profiled in the series speak directly to the audience, describing their passions, impulses and methods. Viewers are invited behind-the-scenes to see artists at work in their studios, homes, communities, and in sites as diverse as an old-growth forest near Seattle, a military base in California, a theater academy in Warsaw, and a film set, in addition to galleries and museums.

“This series not only showcases the contributions of these artists, but also transcends the everyday art experience of a museum or gallery visit,” says Susan Sollins, Executive Producer of the series. “Viewers can discover what goes on inside the minds of these dynamic and thoughtful people, and what they have to say can significantly expand our knowledge and understanding of the world.”

As in the previous three seasons of Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century, each hour-long episode of Season 4 is loosely structured around a theme that unifies the individual artists – as diverse as their mediums may be. Season 4 episodes of Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century include the themes of Ecology, Paradox, Protest, and Romance. The Gallery will premiere two of the four new episodes - one on Friday during lunch and the other Friday evening.</p>

<p>What do circular saws, kevlar, disposable diapers and liquid paper all have in common?

They were all invented by women!

Today's women wear many hats: mother, wife, professional, housekeeper, student, to name but a few. In fulfilling these roles, they invent solutions to all sorts of challenges life throws their way.

As a service to the community, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will conduct a half-day "how to" workshop aimed at helping women take their creative ideas for new products to a mass market-whether that's by selling their concepts to established companies, or by starting a business of their own.

The workshop will answer key questions, such as:

How do I...
...formulate my idea?
...protect my idea?
...determine the demand for my idea?
...prototype my idea?
...establish my new business?
...manufacture my product?
...get my product to my customers?

The entrepreneurial spirit of small business owners is the fuel for America's economic engine. Each year, millions of people take the plunge in starting new ventures. Women - and moms in particular - represent a great reservoir of entrepreneurial energy that can contribute mightily to the economic development of our region.

The sessions will be led by product design and development experts from the faculty and staff at UCCS. Lunch will be provided and the featured lunchtime speaker is Ms. Alyson Probst, a local inventor, business owner and winner of a First Prize Grant in the Whirlpool "Mothers of Invention" Contest for her creation of the "Snack and Play Travel Tray".

Admission is $15 and reservations are REQUIRED. Go to www.learntocreate.com to register.

The workshop will take place at the Garden Pavillion of the Penrose House, located near the Broadmoor Hotel, at 1661 Mesa Avenue in Colorado Springs.

The event planning is being handled by Backstrom Events. Joining UCCS in sponsoring this workshop are Imagination Celebration, the Colorado Small Business Development Center, the Colorado Institute for Technology Transfer and Implementation, and the El Pomar Foundation.</p>

<p>"The love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth ... the only home we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need -- if only we had the eyes to see," said Edward Abbey.

William Rogers and Suzanne Jones will discuss both sides of the debate over the adequacy of our region's wilderness areas and other wildlands. Rogers is president of the Trust for Public Lands, and Jones is the Colorado-Utah regional director for The Wilderness Society. This is the first of a four-part State of the Rockies Project wilderness/wildlands speaker series. Sponsored by the Colorado College State of the Rockies Project.</p>

<p>They say and say and say that picture is worth a thousand words, so why don't they just make a picture about it? Well, that's because there is so much science behind the art of photography that it'd be hard to do. Venture to the Museum to experience an afternoon filled with hands-on activities related to the geology and physics of photography. Additionally, Museum visitors will explore the science of art, identifying the elements of art while browsing the Museum's new photography exhibit: "Changing Mines in America."

Family Exploration Days introduce families to the myriad of educational resources available at WMMI (all programs meet State education standards), and provide another reason for families to become Museum Members! Customary Museum admissions apply to this program, and reservations are requested. Please call 719-488-0880.

Location: Just off I-25 at the Gleneagle exit, #156A. Just across from the north entrance to the U.S. Air Force Academy.</p>

<p>The recently-opened WeUsOur Artist's Market in Manitou Springs is a fantastic place to discover all kinds of hand-made oddities. They're also doing their best to break the mold of the Manitou craft store by bringing art and artists from far and wide to mingle their wares with the locals. Take the upcoming visit of Lxmi Kumar Prajapati from Katmandu, for example. The surname Prajapati means potter in the village of Thimi, Nepal. Laxmi brings tableware and ornamental pieces not seen in this area before. Three foot tall lions that guard the Buddhist temples, Ganesh sconces to clear obstacles from your life, and elegant contemporary tableware benchmark the work of Laxmi. Meet this humble man, see him demonstrate how he makes an elephant head on a potters wheel, and view the contemporary wares he brings to us influenced by generations of Thimi potters.
Thimi is a village of potters whose trade extends far back in generations. To make current processes and technologies accessible to these Thimi potters, Laxmi and his brother, Santa, have started a pottery cooperative. <p>"A dreaded sunny day, so I'll meet you at the cemetery gates," crooned Morrissey. Now's your chance! The annual Historic Reenactment & Benefit Walking Tour at Evergreen Cemetery will take place on Saturday, September 22, 2007. Guided walking tours from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. will take you on a 1.2-mile stroll through the beautiful and historic cemetery. The last tour leaves at 12:30 p.m.

The event, sponsored by the Evergreen Cemetery Benevolent Society, will introduce you to characters of the past who helped shape Colorado Springs into what it is today. Costumed reenactors will bring to life many of the early pioneers, the famous and not so famous, who each contributed to the building of this community. They will share their stories of what it was like to live in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region 150 years ago.

The $7 admission fee (children 12 and under are free) helps fund restoration and preservation projects in the pioneer sections of Evergreen Cemetery, as well as continued restoration of the Historic Evergreen Chapel.
Evergreen Cemetery is located at 1005 S. Hancock Avenue (at the corner of Fountain & Hancock). For more information call 630-7328 or 578-6646.</p>
