<p>Comprised of images recently discovered in a lost cache of photographic negatives, this exhibition presents Muray’s portraits of the artist Frida Kahlo. Muray, whose work appeared regularly in Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair, was a personal friend of Kahlo in the 1930s and 1940s. His photographs capture the essence of Frida Kahlo, significant people in her life and her deep interest in her Mexican heritage.

<p>MARAVILLAS DE LOS TEJEDORES
WONDERS OF THE WEAVERS
Nineteenth Century Rio Grande Weavings
From the Collection of the Albuquerque Museum
Opening May 26, 2007

Hispanic weavings are the epitome of Southwestern art and culture and this summer the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum showcases the Hispanic textile tradition with Wonders of the Weavers (Maravillas de los Tejedores).

This collection of 37 Hispanic Rio Grande textiles brings together a variety of Rio Grande textile styles made between 1820 and 1900 and emphasizes weavings from the Albuquerque area, the historic center of the Rio Grande weaving industry. A Hispanic treadle loom upon which two of the featured early blankets were woven is also featured. Weaving tools including a reed, a spinning wheel bobbin, wool cards and sheep shears illustrate the tools of the early industry.

Since 1598 Spanish entradas into the Rio Grande Valley brought the first sheep into the region. They also brought professional weavers from Spain who introduced the horizontal treadle loom. Through trade, raiding, and other aspects of cultural contact between and among Spanish colonists and native people, traditional Spanish weaving tools and methods spread throughout the Southwest.

<p>“A lust for life” characterizes the work of Mary Chenoweth (1918-1999). A prolific artist working in a remarkably contemporary style for her time, Chenoweth served as Professor of Art at Colorado College for thirty-plus years. This exhibit, curated by Daisy McConnell, of Chenoweth’s work will survey both the incredible breadth of media the artist employed during her career, and explore recurrent themes within her work.
A hardworking and self-effacing artist, Chenoweth quietly built an enduring legacy that remains visible at Colorado College and within the Colorado Springs community. She is remarkable for her work ethic—she created art almost every day for 80 years—and her successful career as an exhibiting artist and Professor of Art during a time when very few women artists broke through the art world’s gender barriers.
Chenoweth’s work employed many media, from traditional Printmaking to sculpture; from collage to pen and ink drawing; from painting to artist books. Her artwork is characterized by vibrant colors, lively abstract and stylized shapes, and keen observations from the world around her.
Chenoweth traveled extensively, and evidence of her travels is apparent in her paintings, artist books, and sketch books, many of which will be on display in Coburn Gallery during this exhibit. The ports of Australia, North Africa, and the Orient, among other locales, were highly influential on her choice of colors, collage, and forms.
The exhibit will feature artwork from the Colorado College Art collection, the recently acquired Mary A. Chenoweth Collection in Tutt Library’s Special Collections, and Colorado Springs area collectors and friends of the artist. A highlight of the exhibition will be a hand-carved door recently donated by the estate of Peggy Marshall, a long-time patron and friend of the artist.
Sponsored by the Colorado College Summer Festival of the Arts.

<p>Winner of seven Tony Awards, EVITA brings to life the dynamic, larger-than-life persona of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator, Juan Peron. Blessed with charisma, Eva Peron captivated a nation by championing the working class. This exuberant production creates a gripping theatrical experience and features Andrew Lloyd Webber's compelling Latin, pop, and jazz influenced score. One of the most popular collaborations between Webber and Tim Rice, this legendary musical features the memorable song "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina."</p>

<p>Smokebrush and www.freehub.us are proud to present ROLL, the 3rd Annual Bike Art Show. The exhibit will include works by favorite returning artists such as Taliah Lempert, Larry Diskin, and John & Jennifer Ellis, as well as many new artists, including Canadian Sculptor David McCelvey and local photographer Holly Conlon.

We will also debut 108 Medicine Wheels for Peace at the show's opening. This community-based project will center on a giant, kinetic sculpture to be installed on the roof of Smokebrush's building. Composed of donated bicycle rims that have been transformed into pieces of artwork by local artists and students from FutureSelf & the Children's ARC, the installation will celebrate art, collaboration, peace, and the environment.

Entertainment for the First Friday opening will be provided by the band mumbo-jumbo and beverages are generously provided by Bristol Brewing Company and Southwest Wine & Spirits. The event is free and open to the public, but we will take donations to raise money for the Medicine Wheel Trail Group.</p>

<p>You've seen and read "Hamlet" enough times to know that it's cultural permutations have gone so far beyond the text and the myriad interpretations and stagings of the play. But how far?

HAMLETMACHINE, a post modern ''meditation on 'Hamlet'' written by East German playwright Heiner Meuller, will take you there.

The performance will be presented as a multi-media work using video and audio as well as live actors.

"HAMLETMACHINE was written by Heiner Meuller in 1977. It is considered one of Meuller's best works. Written in 5 acts, like Hamlet, this experimental take on Shakespeare's tragedy is a mere 6 pages long and yet some productions of this play have lasted eight hours. The work addresses issues such as communism, feminism, The 1956 Hungarian Revolt, consumerism, and of course, "Hamlet".

"The shrunken head of the Hamlet tragedy" "[HAMLETMACHINE] may be read as a pamphlet against the delusions of innocence in this, our world." - Heiner Meuller

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born in Eppendorf, E Germany. Initially a journalist, he worked at the Maxim-Gorki-Theater in East Berlin (1958-9), was a playwright for the Berlin Ensemble (1970-6), and became one of its directors in 1992. A Communist, his work was influenced by Bertolt Brecht and is vigorously anti-fascist, humanist, and later also critical of the socialist regime in East Germany. He wrote plays together with his wife, Inge Meuller, and adaptations of Shakespeare and classical drama, including Philoktet, Oedipus Tyrann, Hamletmachine and Medea. One of the most significant and much-performed playwrights of the 20th-c, he was awarded the Georg-Buchner-Preis in 1985 and the Kleist Preis in 1990.</p>

<p>Le Chat Lunatique plays a combination of Gypsy Swing, Western Swing, and anything else they please! Filthy, mangy jazz is their forte. The band was formed due to a shared love for the great Hot Club of France, a gypsy swing group from 1940s Paris, which included the combined genius of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. This Albuquerque-based quartet, which features CC alum Muni Kulasinghe ('97) was recently voted Best Jazz Act by the Weekly Alibi.</p>

<p>The new work from Lucidity Suitcase Intercontinental, follows two journeys. An Indian immigrant, disillusioned with the world he lives, takes off into the American West in a Winnebago, while a young man hits the road searching for his past at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. Road-side attractions and rest stops include: New Mexican pueblos, Acoma Sky City, the Wigwam Motel, Route 66, desert RV parks, ‘Ice Station Zebra’ re-runs, the Satellite Diner, the Las Vegas Casino Monorail, and Korean karaoke.

Created in the flux of a world almost irreversibly out of control, FLAMINGO/WINNEBAGO will also explore the planet’s tipping point: the US’s excessive use of energy and resources, peak oil theory, the rapidly changing weather and the Mayan calendar prediction of a transformation that will happen on December 12, 2012.

A sweeping epic about our past and the future - FLAMINGO/WINNEBAGO represents one last journey before the world changes, unrecognizably, forever. Features alumni Thaddeus Phillips, Jeremy Wilhelm, and Muni Kulasinghe.

<p>On Sunday, June 24 at 2:30 p.m., First Christian Church is presenting Drew Mays, one of those dedicated musicians called an “amateur pianist.” By day, Drew is an ophthalmologist. After work, he spends time with his wife and four children, then practices piano until midnight. The second-place winner of the 2006 Amateur Pianists International competition, Drew will play selections by Bach, Beethoven, Ravel, Schumann and Liszt. A free will offering will be taken, and all are welcome at a reception hosted by API following the concert.

Many years ago, Drew Mays received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Alabama. He studied further at the Conservatory of Music in Hanover, Germany and at the Manhattan School of Music with Nina Svetlanova. But at some point, the necessity of having a job with a substantial income and security overcame his love of music, and he changed career paths. Drew is currently an ophthalmologist sub-specializing in glaucoma, but his passion for music has led him back to the piano, which he practices diligently. He lives with his wife, Therese and four children in Birmingham, Alabama.

From May 28-June 3, he will be competing in the International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in Fort Worth, Texas. For his concert at First Christian Church on June 24, Drew will perform the Prelude and Fugue in G Major from J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier Book I, Ludwig von Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata, Maurice Ravel’s Jeux d’Eau, Robert Schumann’s Toccata, and the Mephisto Waltz by Franz Liszt.

<p>On Friday, June 22 at 7:00 p.m., First Christian Church is presenting the African Children’s Choir. Composed of children ages 7-12 from Uganda, the choir will perform folk songs and spirituals both in English and their own language, dressed in native costumes and accompanied by ethnic instruments. Come and enjoy a heart-warming encounter with the children of another culture. A free-will offering will be taken for the choir.

The African Children’s Choir features delightful African children ages 7 through 11. Many have lost one or both parents through the devastation of war, famine and disease. Their voices sing out on behalf of Africa’s 12 million AIDS orphans. They represent the future of the entire continent, demonstrating the potential to become strong leaders for a better future in their homeland. In spite of the tragedy that has marred their young lives, these musically gifted children are radiant with hope and wonderfully entertaining. They melt the hearts of audiences with their charming smiles and joyful African melodies and dance. The primary goal of the African Children’s Choir is to raise awareness of the need of destitute and orphaned children in Africa and to raise funds for continued development and support of the Choir’s relief and development programs. Once Choir members have completed a concert tour, they will return to their homelands with the support, care and education necessary for bettering their future and that of their brothers and sisters.

<p>One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, this moving study of the enigmatic painter Georges Seurat won a Pulitzer Prize for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of life through art and the artist. Act one follows the inarticulate Seurat as he fights a losing battle to maintain a relationship with his mistress, Dot, as he creates his painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” amid the scorn of the artistic community. The second act takes place 100 years later, introducing us to his American descendant, also an artist, burned out and uncertain of the path he must take.

This production was specifically chosen to correspond with the Fine Arts Center Museum’s traveling exhibition Impressionist and Modern Masters from the New Orleans Museum of Art. Call the box office or visit our website for more information on this tremendous exhibit.</p>

<p><p>This poignant and brutal new comedy traces one woman's attempt to regain her memory while surrounded by a curio-cabinet of alarmingly bizarre characters. Every twist and turn in this funhouse plot brings Claire (a suburban housewife and mother who has a rare form of psychogenic amnesia that erases her memory whenever she goes to sleep) closer to revealing her past life and everything she thought she'd forgotten. It's one harrowing and hilarious turn after another on this roller coaster ride through the day of an amnesiac trying to decipher her fractured life. This production includes adult language and subject matter.</p>

<p>The vivid shapes in Laura Ross-Pauls paintings and monotypes symbolize the point at which the internal and external forces combine. The paintings abstract backgrounds represent the intellectual and spiritual realm; the incisively depicted figures represent the material and scientific. Situated, but not embedded in their landscapes, Ross-Pauls figures hover between an emotional world and the real world. Her most recent body of work, simply titled Naked, was developed in response to deeply personal experiences of vulnerability and their related emotions. Exhibiting and active throughout the Pacific Northwest for over 20 years, Laura Ross-Paul is among the foremost painters of the region. Her narrative imagery is known for potent, direct emotion.</p>

<p>Cyberskins are technologically wired powwow garments that draw from traditional and high tech cultures.

The Cyberskins worn by performers in the Tekcno Powwow take on a new life in a gallery installation created by Bently Spang. Spang is a multi-disciplinary visual artist whose work focuses on his experience as a contemporary Cheyenne. His mixed media sculpture, video, performance, and installation pieces explore contemporary Native existence with pragmatism, humor, and deep introspection. Spang has a BA in art and business from MSU-Billings, and a MFA in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has exhibited widely in the US, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and South America.</p>

<p>Let's get this out of the way: "cyberskins" are technologically wired powwow garments that draw from traditional and high tech cultures.

Says artist Bently Spang: "The term "redskin", as Native peoples on this continent were called at one time (and which certain sports teams continue to use), emerges from a time in this country when one could collect a bounty for the skin of a dead Native person. Cyberskins, in direct contrast to this brutal act, is the act of creating a new skin. Cyberskins are technologically advanced exteriors that draw inspiration from current powwow regalia, traditional information and high tech culture to form an impenetrable shield. They are designed specifically to meet the demands of today's Native American Indian Aboriginal Indigenous Native person, as they continue to morph and grow."</p>

<p>LOCATION: 104 E. Rio Grande St., Colorado Springs

THE TOUR: In 1897, fourteen visionary Colorado Springs women founded the Day Nursery Association, now known as the Child Nursery Centers. One of the founders was Alice Bemis Taylor, who moved to Colorado Springs in the late 1800s for health reasons. Ms. Taylor had a keen interest in architecture and a strong desire to bring beauty and elegance into the lives of those who had little or none. With this in mind, she built the Historic Day Nursery located at 104 E. Rio Grande, which was dedicated in December of 1923, as a tribute to her mother and as a permanent facility for less fortunate young children. The dedication reads “to all mothers and all children”. Mrs. Taylor donated the land and building to the Day Nursery.</p>

<p>LOCATION: 701 S. CASCADE AVENUE

TOUR GUIDE: Michael Collins Architecture

THE TOUR: The Maytag Aircraft Corporation building, designed by Jim Wallace, AIA of Lusk & Wallace Architects in 1957, was placed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties in 2006. The building is significant as an exceptional example of Modern architecture in Colorado Springs. Contributing features include its folded plate roof, cantilevered walls, recessed foundation (which makes it appear to be floating above the ground), and use of an exterior courtyard as an integral part of the building. The building is also historically significant for serving as the Maytag Aircraft Corporation’s headquarters from 1957 through 1982. The company specialized in providing aircraft refueling services to the military, and maintenance and servicing of executive aircraft and the manufacture of aircraft parts. Its current owner is Court Appointed Special Advocates of the Pikes Peak Region (CASA), a non-profit organization dedicated to serving our area’s victimized children.

TOUR GUIDES: Michael Collins, AIA Michael Collins Architects will speak to us of the building’s architectural features. Trudy Strewler has been the Executive Director of CASA since its inception in 1989; Roz Stouffer as Operations Manager took on the project of getting the Maytag Building on the State Register of Historic Properties, which was granted to the Maytag Building in December 2005.

<p>The Pikes Peak Derby Dames present the Roller Derby Season Opening Bout between the Danger Dolls and the Candy Snipers at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium.

Watch as Snow White Trash, Fanny Fister, Brat Benatar and Count Smacula of the Danger Dolls take on Slugs-N-Kisses, Yuk Foo, Peaches & Scream and Swiss Missile of the Candy Snipers.

The Mansfields will also be performing at this bone crushing, skin tearing, eye gouging extravaganza.

Has anyone else seen that Roller Derby-ish movie with James Caan playing a futuristic Roller Derby star? I wonder if the movie portends any of the action you'll see here.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Bout starts at 7 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased at the City Auditorium and Park Paralegal, 608 S. Nevada Ave.</p>

Exhibition from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Summer Seminar, is a scholarship program, available nationally to artistically gifted high school juniors (2006-07) in public and private schools. <p><p>W invite you to experience the historical side of our city by touring one of its oldest homes, the mcAllister House Museum. Once known as &quot;Little London,&quot; the community of Colorado Springs boasted a cosmopolitan atmosphere unmatched in its time. Major henry McAllister, a noted Civil War veteran and one of our early pioneers, community leaders and benefactors, built this charming house in 1873. Knowledgeable guides and staff recreate the atmosphere of the early history of the family and city, making the house and its occupants live again. the museum has been restored to its original Victorian elegance by the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the state of Colorado and is listed in the national Register of Historical Places. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.</p></p>

<p>Buy some juicy Colorado Grown Melons while listening to the musical stylings of Dakota Blonde.

The Gettin' Down, Downtown summer concert sponsored by Classic Companies will be held at America the Beautiful Park. The Farm and Art Market starts at 4 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m. The music will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Both the Market and music are free.

People can enjoy shopping for locally grown produce while listening to great music. Both are free and open to the public. The market also has original unique art by juried artists. The market has fruit and vegetables grown only in Colorado. Some are organic and naturally grown and there exists a touch of the conventional. We are the only farmers market in Colorado Springs that accepts Quest/EBT and debit cards. So remember, buy fresh, buy local!</p>

<p>The first Native American newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix, was published from 1828 to 1834 in what is today northern Georgia. Newspaper articles were printed in English and in Cherokee using the Sequoyan syllabary. While the Phoenix is a prized asset to any library, scholarship describing the newspaper's print shop is scarce. Frank Brannon's research regarding the Phoenix explores three primary items used in printing the newspaper: the metal printing type, the press and the paper used in printing. Brannon will present his research on the Phoenix print shop and the Cherokee syllabary. A special focus of the talk will be a description of the limited edition monograph produced from the research, which was printed in traditional letterpress manner with handmade paper and bound in a style evocative of early 19th-century bindings west of the Appalachians. Visit Brannon's Web site at www.speakeasypress.com. An exhibit of Brannon's work will be in Tutt Library from June 25-July 13.

<p>The Press at Colorado College, founded by Jim Trissell in 1978, is a letterpress dedicated to the art of making limited edition books and broadsides. Under Trissell's guidance, The Press became one of the finest letterpresses in the country, producing stunningly beautiful books on a variety of subjects, including "Color for the Letterpress," "Twelve Mammal Skulls," "A Selection of Poems by Helen Hunt Jackson and Emily Dickinson" and "Silence," the latter considered one of the most beautiful books ever made. Over the years The Press has published work by some of the best writers in the English language. Since Trissell's death, The Press has continued its work under the supervision of Brian Molanphy, Chris Forsythe and Colin Frazer. From its inception, The Press has served as a classroom for students interested in book arts and literature.

<p>Pax Quaeritur Bello
(Let Peace be Sought through War)
– Oliver Cromwell’s personal motto

Coins, Crown & Conflict: An Exploration of Cromwell’s England explores the period from the reign of Charles I and the English Civil Wars to the first years of the restored British monarchy under Charles II, through the coins, medals, people and objects associated with Oliver Cromwell.

Oliver Cromwell has been the subject of speculation and research over the 350 years since his death. Some have praised him as a great reformer and supporter of religious freedom while others have reviled him as a ruthless tyrant. One thing we know is true – during his life (1599 – 1658) there was great change in England in religious, economic and political terms. Cromwell’s own actions and the events of his lifetime form one of the pivotal points in the history of Great Britain and her colonies.

The exhibit features the Petition Crown, one of England's most rare and valuable coins. This marks the first time the coin has been displayed in the United States. Other artifacts include Oliver Cromwell's death mask, spectacles, and gauntlets.</p>
