In 1859, the small settlement of El Dorado, located at the eastern entrance to the pass, that went thru the mountains to the west, was renamed Colorado City, by its founders, and became the first permanent town in the Pikes Peak region
Early settlers included farmers, ranchers, freighter and outfitters for the people who were rushing to the western minefields By 1886, the Colorado Midland Railroad was one of the city’s largest employers, with headquarter offices, terminal, and repair yards located here
A Glass Works was established in 1887, where bottles were made for Manitou Mineral Water, liquor, and wine, by Bohemian glass blowers Anheuser Busch, Mayor Charles Stockbridge, and others, also bottled beer here at the turn of the century
When Gold was discovered in 1891 at Cripple Creek, prosperity came from the four gold ore reduction mills, operating in Colorado City
The town soon became more famous for its many Saloons and Brothels, while the hardworking residents were much more proud of their schools, The Carnegie Public Library, and the churches As time went on, change was inevitable for Colorado City, and in 1917, it was annexed by Colorado Springs

An HO scale modular railroad – the Colorado East Central Railway – will be operating and running from open to close during Territory Days, May 25th to 27th at the Old Colorado City History Center
This portable layout is 28 feet long and will fill the main display area of the museum
In the spirit of Territory Days and early Colorado City, some model Colorado Midland steam locomotives will be pulling both passenger and freight trains The display will also include freight and passenger trains of the 1920's to 1950's pulled by Santa Fe, Rio Grande, and Union Pacific steam locomotives This would include the smaller lighter steam engines of the early years to the mighty Challenger and Mountain types needed for the long freight trains of the 40's and 50's
The diesel years, from the 1950’s to the present, will also be operating Like the steam engines, they were promptly put to work in both passenger and freight service
Chris Fox, model railroader and chief engineer, built the CEC layout in 2010 He has been modeling trains for 53 years and has been a member of several public and private model train groups

Our Tapestry Of Stories Continues
With An Epic Journey From This World To That Which Is To Come
Utilizing over twenty hand-carved marionettes, this elaborate stage production of The Pilgrim's Progress features puppeteer David Simpich in the role of author John Bunyan as he recounts his fantastic dream of the journey of Christian, a sin-burdened every-man, from the City of Destruction to the Celestial Gate
His harrowing adventures along the Straight and Narrow Path bring to light and life the classic Bunyan "visions" of the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair, the River of Death, battles with demons and dragons, imprisonment by Giant Despair, colorful discourse with an array of wise men and fools and one defining moment at the foot of The Cross
This Simpich production is not only an exciting introduction to this timeless story, but a vivid illustration of the very essence of Christian Faith

A Place Apart: Colorado and the American West, Photographs by Robert Adams For over forty years, Robert Adams’ photographs have celebrated the beauty of the American West, often focusing his attention on overlooked subjects and vistas: the quiet streets of small towns, the wide-open prairies of the eastern plains, or the unexpected junctures when wilderness and urban development meet Inherent in his images is the recognition of the relentless absorption and transformation of nature by human development The exhibition will run through June 15, 2013

Head downtown to GOCA121 – UCCS’ satellite gallery in the Plaza of the Rockies - for an artist talk with Bill Starr at 7 pm, followed by a free concert by Colorado Springs-based musician Alex Koshak Koshak will perform as part of GOCA and COPPeR’s joint “Free First Fridays” concert series with his newest project Charioteer from 7:30 – 9:00 pm Refreshments will be served thanks to generous donations from Brewers Republic, Bristol Brewing, and Nosh Restaurant 121 S Tejon Street (Plaza of the Rockies), Suite 100
DOCUMENTATION features the work of three Colorado-based photographers – Matt Chmielarczyk, Bill Starr and Andrea Wallace - and their compelling personal narratives Artist Bill Starr has for the past 22 years captured movement in dance, theater, performance art and most recently Colorado's indie/electronic/folk music scene through photography Starr's physical and social challenges from living with acute rheumatoid arthritis since the age of nine inform how he observes and translates movement into his prolific practice GOCA is a contemporary arts organization with two galleries - one on the UCCS campus since 1982 and a satellite opened in 2010 in the Plaza of the Rockies building in downtown Colorado Springs The exhibit is on display through June 29, 2013

This year marks the 50th Annual Pikes Peak Gem & Mineral Show, and it will be an eventful weekend! Produced by the museum’s partners from the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society, and supported by the Colorado Meteorite Society, the event centers around meteorites (extraterrestrial rocks) that have CRASHED into our planet from outer space!

This event will feature the largest exhibit of meteorites ever assembled in Colorado and will include: A “Hammerstone” that traveled through space to crash through a garage roof in Canyon City, CO - terrifying the only one home on that night in 1973: Little Misty the cat!
Trevor's goal? To prevent the critic from writing a scathing review that could destroy his career

Al Eberhardt’s Changing Times Quintet might be described as “Southern Colorado’s Fabulous Five” This group plays standards and some originals that appeal to jazz and dance crowds of all ages The Changing Times was created by Al Eberhardt in 1976 and was at that point a six piece band made up of all Air Force Academy band musicians who wanted to “moonlight” with gigs off base After the arrival of John Turner as pianist for the group, it added more vocals to it’s repertoire and dropped from a sextet to a quartet format for most engagements, to make the group more affordable The group’s popularity grew through the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s and was featured as a house band in the Broadmoor Hotel for almost two decades during that period The band even once embarked on a special “fan’s musical cruise” of the Caribbean for the group’s loyal followers, and band family members The Changing Times has also made three

recordings
The national magazine monthly publication, “Dancing USA” and the Denver Post, have both given Changing Time’s albums high reviews Currently, the original band members now mostly perform with other groups, but still are featured with “The Changing Times” quintet for occasional local special engagements that demand their unique skills and abilities
For the July 3, 2013 concert at The Broadmoor Community Church, The Changing Times Quintet will feature Al Eberhardt on trumpet and vocals, John Turner on piano and vocals, Carlos Crull on Tenor sax and vocals, Wayne Wilkinson on guitar, and Eric Eberhardt on drums and vocals This highly versatile group will perform a variety of musical styles of jazz and swing tunes

Part of Stargazers Summer Fun Friday Free Concerts! The Glory days of the American cowboy have been relegated to a bygone era that ended over 100 years ago Yet, the romantic legend of the cowboy lives on in song Around the campfire, the cowboy sang of life on the trail with all the challengers, hardships and dangers encountered while pushing contrary critters endless miles up the legendary dusty trails that headed north While much of what is included in the genre of “cowboy music” is “traditional," a number of songs have been written in the last 75-plus years and made famous by groups like the “Sons of the Pioneers” and “Riders in the Sky” and individual performers such as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Michael Martin Murphey and other “singing cowboys” Singing in the “wrangler style” these entertainers have served to preserve the cowboy as a unique American hero
The Flying W Wranglers have been a part of the tradition for 60 years, making them the world’s second oldest western singing group In 2009 the Western Music Association inducted the Flying W Wranglers into the Hall of Fame Definitely not “drug store” cowboys, the lines of these men are interwoven in rural communities around horses, cattle and the great outdoors, And, when it’s time for branding at the Flying W each fall, these cowboys get down and dirty and take care of business There is definite “authenticity” in their performances whether during the Chuckwagon Season, the Winter Steakhouse or performing concerts abroad January and February find them working in an on-site recording studio and putting together new shows for the upcoming year The Flying W Wranglers are an integral part of preserving our great western heritage

A little background information: The Cheyenne Mountain Zoological Society was founded in 1926 by philanthropist Spencer Penrose to house his growing collection of exotic animals In 1938, after substantial development, Mr Penrose incorporated the Zoo as a non-profit public trust for the people of Colorado Springs “for the sole purpose of establishing and maintaining a zoological park to provide recreation, education, conservation, and scientific facilities in the field of zoology and related subjects, and to preserve the Zoo in perpetuity for the people of the Pikes Peak region”

Let’s face it: Bartering is no picnic Once humans realized a medium of exchange might be useful in figuring out how much an ax was worth compared to a cow, money has made the world go ‘round

Visitors to the American Numismatic Association’s Money Museum can see the many different forms, shapes and uses money has taken in the past 10,000 years in a new exhibit, “History of Money”

“History of Money” poses the question: What qualifies as money? In essence, money is anything people will accept as payment in exchange for goods and services From there, the exhibit traces money’s earliest origins and highlights money’s evolution across the ages – from cowrie shells to credit cards and beyond

See “History of Money” for free during an opening reception on April 26 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Money Museum One lucky visitor will win a 2,000-year-old ancient coin during the opening Visitors can take home a special National Coin Week medallette made in the museum’s Mini-Mint

“History of Money” is a permanent exhibit in the museum’s lower gallery Sections of the exhibit displays will change on a regular basis to highlight historically important items from the museum’s 275,000 piece collection
