UCCS THEATREWORKS begins its season with "Hamlet," the most universal play in the world, the play that more than any other speaks to everyone. And for the first time, our Shakespeare Festival includes another play, "Antonio's Revenge" (see separate listing for dates and times). Why? Because it's another version of "Hamlet," by a different playwright, John Marston, a kind of Elizabethan Quentin Tarantino. Performed in repertory, these two plays, written in the same year and telling much the same story, will give our audiences a unique and unprecedented opportunity of seeing "Hamlet" and its own reflection back to back. We think you'll find it most illuminating, most entertaining!

Theatreworks Director Murray Ross wasn't kidding when he likened "Antonio's Revenge" playwright John Marston, a contemporary of Shakespeare's, to Quentin Tarantino. This raucous, bloody, bawdy revenge play is to "Hamlet" what "Reservoir Dogs" is to "Bonnie and Clyde." What's exciting is that "Antonio's Revenge" plays in repertory with "Hamlet" for this season's Shakespeare Festival with the same cast and set. Though it's not for children 13 or under, adults who love "Hamlet" won't want to miss the opportunity to get a broader glimpse of the times and culture in which "Hamlet" was written. Plus, it's just plain fun.

The Colorado Balloon Classic is one of the most visually spectacular events of the year in the entire Pkes Peak Region. Organized in 1977, it's grown to be the largest and the longest continuously running hot air balloon festival in the Rocky Mountain Region as well as the State of Colorado.

It's free and it's held in Memorial Park off Pikes Peak Avenue between Hancock Ave. and Union Blvd near the shores of Prospect Lake. Mass ascensions of approximately 90 balloons are scheduled for 7 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings with a Balloon Glo (very cool-they fill and light them up from inside with the burners!) scheduled for Saturday and Sunday evenings. Each year a variety of concessions are available and entertainment is provided during each event. See the website for full details.

Le Chat Lunatique plays a combination of Gypsy Swing, Western Swing, and anything else they please! Filthy, mangy jazz is their forte. The band was formed due to a shared love for the great Hot Club of France, a gypsy swing group from 1940s Paris, which included the combined genius of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. This Albuquerque-based quartet, which features CC alum Muni Kulasinghe ('97) was recently voted Best Jazz Act by the Weekly Alibi.

The new work from Lucidity Suitcase Intercontinental, follows two journeys. An Indian immigrant, disillusioned with the world he lives, takes off into the American West in a Winnebago, while a young man hits the road searching for his past at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. Road-side attractions and rest stops include: New Mexican pueblos, Acoma Sky City, the Wigwam Motel, Route 66, desert RV parks, ‘Ice Station Zebra’ re-runs, the Satellite Diner, the Las Vegas Casino Monorail, and Korean karaoke.

Created in the flux of a world almost irreversibly out of control, FLAMINGO/WINNEBAGO will also explore the planet’s tipping point: the US’s excessive use of energy and resources, peak oil theory, the rapidly changing weather and the Mayan calendar prediction of a transformation that will happen on December 12, 2012.

A sweeping epic about our past and the future - FLAMINGO/WINNEBAGO represents one last journey before the world changes, unrecognizably, forever. Features alumni Thaddeus Phillips, Jeremy Wilhelm, and Muni Kulasinghe.

If ever there were a symphonic event in the Pikes Peak Region NOT to be missed, this is it: The Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra presents Sergei Eisenstein's great 1925 film masterpiece, fully remastered, and projected on a giant screen above the live orchestra. The orchestra performs Dmitri Shostakovich's powerful score under the baton of Music Director Lawrence Leighton Smith.

The Soviet film documents the historic mutiny of sailors in the Czar's navy in 1905 and has served as a testament against oppression ever since. Shostakovich based his Eleventh Symphony on the same events as those in the film. A truly unique experience for music lovers, film enthusiasts, students of history, and anyone wanting an exhilarating evening of film and music. First time ever in Colorado Springs! WATCH FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS OF SPECIAL PRE-CONCERT LECTURES AND EVENTS

If you long for the good old days, those seemingly bygone days when your community could get together over pie and ice cream and celebrate the long and lazy days of summer, then long no more.

The Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce presents the 6th annual Pie Baking Contest and the 12th annual Ice Cream Social held in Soda Springs Park from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Little London winds will perform at the park as they have every Monday this summer, but this time you'll be able to eat pie and ice cream and talk to your Manitoid neighbors.

Contact the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce at 719-685-5089 for contest rules and entry information if you fancy yourself a pie baker and would like to participate.

FIDEM is celebrating its 30th Art Medal World Congress at the American Numismatic Association in Colorado Springs!

For the first time in 20 years, The International Medal Federation (FIDEM) is holding its Art Medal World Congress in the United States. FIDEM XXX will bring together over 150 of the world’s finest handheld sculpture artists for a series of lectures, workshops, receptions and other activities.

Events include a banquet at the 5-star Broadmoor Resort celebrating FIDEM’s 70th birthday, and a special reception bringing together visiting artists and the Colorado Springs art community. The ANA Money Museum is preparing an exhibit featuring 1,500 handheld sculptures from 35 countries. Edmund Moy, Director of the United States Mint, will deliver the congress’ keynote address on Sept. 19.

Colorado Springs is home to Pikes Peak and a vibrant local art scene, and serves as a fitting home for FIDEM XXX. Several activities are planned to take advantage of this picturesque location. A post-congress trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico explores the heart of American Southwestern art & culture.

For more than half a century, FIDEM has held a biennial congress and exhibition of medallic art. This year’s theme, Passages to Reconstruction, conveys a message of strength and hope following Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami that devastated South and Southeast Asia.

Did you catch the buzz after last year's groundbreaking FLAUNT: Fashion Under the Bridge event?

Last year's fundraiser, which rocked over 300 people with edgy fashion, art and entertainment, was named "Best New Event" by the Gazette and "Best Use of an Unconventional Space" by The Independent.
This year, FLAUNT will again raise the bar for Springs' events. This benefit raises funds for the dynamic organization FutureSelf: Youth Discovering Success Through Art.
This year's "cirque" theme will combine music and dance performances in collaboration with Idoru's high energy, progressive fashion show - more like theatre, less like a boring fundraiser! There will be food, beer and wine, and a sculpture garden including art from the youth participating in FutureSelf. The fun will continue into the night with a private V.I.P. after-party at a hip, downtown Colorado Springs nightclub.
Ticket prices are $30 for General Admission and $60 for a VIP pass. Tickets will be available at Idoru (218 N. Tejon, Ste. 100), at two Toni and Guy locations (750 Citadel Dr E # 2292 & 1710 Briargate Blvd #143), and at www.flauntfashionunderthebridge.com
This year's sponsors include Samuel Adams, Toni and Guy Salon, American National Bank, The Gazette, Manitou Arts Theater, Sonterra Grill, & Nosh.

FutureSelf provides under-served, low-income youth ages 12 - 19 in the Pikes Peak region with arts-based workshops, exhibition, and performance opportunities. Young people experience connectedness, self-expression and success, and this results in increased self-efficacy, improved academic performance and hope for the future. For more information about FutureSelf, visit their website at: www.futureself.org
