Colorado Springs Sports Corporation
Created in 1978 as the United States Olympic Committee relocated from New York City to Colorado Springs and staged its inaugural National Sports Festival at the foot of Pikes Peak, the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation has grown and prospered over nearly three decades to become a driving force in the agenda for amateur and Olympic sport, as well as for the state’s youth.
The Sports Corp plays a vital role in assisting the USOC and the 48 other national and international sports organizations which call Colorado Springs “home,” in their endeavors and events. It stages the annual Rocky Mountain State Games for some 6,000 athletes in all age and skills group, and hosted the 2005 State Games of America for a record 9,462 athletes from across the nation. The Sports Corp will host the national event again in 2007 and expects 10,000 athletes.
In recent years, the Sports Corp has played a major role in promoting and assisting in the staging of Air Force Academy sports, NCAA Ice Hockey Regional Championships, the USA Boxing and USA Archery National Championships, the 2008 U.S. Senior Open golf classic, and many other high-profile events. It conducts the Colorado Springs Sports Hall Fame induction ceremonies annually.
In 2006, the Sports Corp spearheaded a successful effort that earned Colorado Springs a place in the USOC’s elite Community Partners program alongside Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, San Francisco, Birmingham and other U.S. cities which have committed to help the USOC develop and prepare Olympic and Paralympic athletes in their respective communities.
