Unlike many such shows, which sum up a lifetime of achievement, this is a mid- career survey (he was born in 1959) that has the potential to refocus his work and significantly boost his career going forward.
From any point of view, it is a major milestone for Lobato, one only enhanced by the accompanying 88-page catalog and the show's subsequent tour to museums and art centers in Sedona, Ariz.; Ashland, Ore.; and Missoula, Mont. Collapse -

The CSFAC retrospective is installed in a set of galleries on the second floor, just off the connecting atrium that joins the landmark John Gaw Meem-designed building to the expertly conceived addition by David Tryba. The show was put together by Tariana Navas-Nieves, curator of Hispanic and Native American Art at the institution.

Keeping abstraction new and different has led to the development of neo-modernism, which harks back to the mid-twentieth century but looks thoroughly modern at the same time. That's surely the case with Colorado's own Emilio Lobato, the subject of not one, but two solo shows right now. At the venerable Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, there's Mi Linda Soledad/My Beautiful Solitude, a retrospective of Lobato's work from the early '80s to 2009, while the William Havu Gallery here in Denver is featuring Casi, Casi, showcasing work done after that. Lobato's pieces invariably refer to his roots in the San Luis Valley, typically through the use of Spanish titles and somber palettes — but the paintings themselves have an international flavor incorporating various abstract influences, notably minimalism and expressionism. And he resolves these opposites brilliantly. Collapse

Mounting this spectacle of non-stop singing, dancing and intricate patter requires guts and extensive resources. First-time Fine Arts Center director Steve Emily delivers in spades — with some impressive production values, confident direction and dazzling performances by nearly every member of the large cast. It’s probably the best production I’ve seen in the SaGáJi Theatre in the past two years.

“We’re really looking back now and what we see, what we’re drawn to, is the artists that somehow escaped notice,” says Blake Milteer, Fine Arts Center museum director. “We find he was not only in demand (in his time) but doing work that others were looking to. Collapse -
