Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum

Housed in the elegantly restored 1903 El Paso County Courthouse, the Pioneers Museum preserves the history and culture of the Pikes Peak region through a wide variety of exhibits and educational programs. The Museum is free and open to the public.

      The 2 new exhibits at the Pioneers Museum are fabulous. There are about 50 historic photos by different photographers who were important to C/S and lots of old-fashioned camera and photo album... Expand

      The 2 new exhibits at the Pioneers Museum are fabulous. There are about 50 historic photos by different photographers who were important to C/S and lots of old-fashioned camera and photo album displays. Then there's another 200 or so photos where the captions are hidden so you can decide what you think is in the picture or where it is and then find out if you are right. Those pictures cover several decades in C/S history. There's also a bunch of fun artifacts scattered around the room that brought up a lot of memories for me growing up. LOVE the Olympic Barbie!! This is a must see and, as always at the Pioneers Museum, family friendly. Collapse

      This is always one of the highlights of the year. The quilts range from traditional Feathered Star and Baltimore Album patterns to innovative art pieces combining fabric with photo transfers, watercolor pencils, beads and ribbons. The woodworking entries are mostly utilitarian, but take that prosaic mission to an entirely new artistic level. Woods include the familiar maple, pine, aspen and oak but also venture to the exotic cocobolo, wenge, purpleheart and avodire; some pieces are embellished with materials such as turquoise, wrought iron and Colorado alabaster. The museum staff artfully arranged the exhibit, with pairings including Ginger Quinn Mu?oz's "Ginger's Button Shoes" and Sheryll Robbins' "Old Friends" miniature quilts, and Valdez's "Shoji Screen" and Emmel's Japanese quilt. Don't miss Andrew Macdonald's illuminated pieces, with light shining through thinly sliced alabaster set in wood, and Shizue Mahanay's quilt "His Majesty - the Tree," which won juror's choice.
