    Deirdre Schaneman

    Visual Artist

    About the artist:

Deirdre Schaneman is a degreed musician who felt for years that she was courting someone else's muse–that is, until September of 2002 when she took a lampworking class to learn how to make glass beads. From the moment she lit the torch and melted her first lopsided bead, she knew her true creative voice had finally found her. She started making beads and accessories in earnest–first for herself, then for family and friends, and eventually for her loyal clients. "Glass is a medium which requires your respect, and if you forget, it will remind you!" Deirdre shares, sighting numerous burns and cuts she's endured in working with hot glass. "In many ways, working with glass is just like playing music, especially jazz. Both are temporal art forms, reliant on the performer's skill, creativity, and ability to improvise. If the performer does well, she creates a masterpiece–if not, it's still a valuable learning experience that prepares the artist for the next opportunity to create something beautiful." Deirdre has been honing her craft, seeking her inspiration from many different sources, most notably nature. After years of living on the shores of Lake Michigan, and now enjoying the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, she has been fortunate to live in regions which never cease to provide ideas. She takes shapes, colors, landscapes and creatures from nature and combines them with her own sense of whimsy and design to create one of a kind jewelry pieces and accessories. "There is no feeling in the world that compares to seeing someone wearing a piece that I've created and to know that the piece gives its wearer joy. Accessories are such an integral component in how people present themselves to the world–and it's a privilege to be able to create jewelry for people to help them express who they are," says Deirdre of her vocation.
