Invasion, Colorado

Artist: Chico Santos of Londrina, Brazil          Year: 2016

Santos’ works are site-specific, meaning they become something new every time they are installed. He says he came to Colorado expecting to make one kind of sculpture, but the place (busy Nevada Avenue) and the timber (culled from a Springs park) transformed his vision into something completely unexpected! This piece, which was inspired by the geography of Colorado, represents a tiny city, charming and vaguely insidious, that seems to be infesting its organic host. It’s worth taking a moment to look at this work up-close, to explore how Santos represents the encroachment of humanity on the natural world.
