Prickly Pear in Bloom

“Prickly Pear in Bloom” was created by Tiffany Matheson.

This work consists of a metal openwork frame in the shape of a prickly pear cactus with seven pink-and-orange acrylic flowers.

At night, the flowers use stored solar power to emit a glow that entices the viewer to come closer.

Changing with perspective, the airy cutout work creates the illusion of the cactus paddles appearing from the front view and disappearing from the side.

The solar-powered element and the busy urban setting contrast with the organic subject of the piece, encouraging the viewer to consider the allure of native plant species, the austere beauty of xeriscaping, and the continued importance of environmental sustainability in a changing Colorado landscape.
