Rearing Horse

Towering more than 12 feet high, Rearing Horse marks the entrance to El Paso County’s Centennial Hall in downtown Colorado Springs. The steel piece was created by local artist Don Green in 1986, his first commissioned public artwork. A local since 1940, Don Green relocated from Nebraska as a youth with his farming family. After attending college on a football scholarship, Don was hired in 1956 to teach at Colorado Springs’ East Junior High School, and worked for School District 11 for the next 30 years. Now, after more than three decades of public art and the creation of many well-loved landmarks (including the animal benches at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo), Don has lost track of the exact total of just how many pieces he has sited throughout Colorado Springs and the greater region.
