Rhea's Box

Rhea’s Box is a giant cube created out of red powder-coated steel. It is mounted on the diagonal and rests on one of the points, while all six sides are covered in rivets placed at intervals. The artist, Christopher Weed, says of his work, “The box represents people’s inability to express themselves, both emotionally and physically.”

Weed, born in Philadelphia and educated at University of Maryland (Bachelor of Fine Arts), is known for his large-scale, brightly colored, whimsical steel structures. Of the many Chris Weed sculptures that have graced Colorado Springs’ streets, three have become part of the downtown permanent collection.

Rhea’s Box was included in the 2003 Art on the Streets program, and then purchased by Community Ventures and donated to the City of Colorado Springs.
