Spencer Penrose

This statue of Spencer Penrose was constructed to commemorate the philanthropist’s many notable contributions to Colorado Springs, most notably the Broadmoor Hotel, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Pikes Peak Highway, and the El Pomar Foundation.

Sculptor Avard Tennyson Fairbanks studied both art and anatomy and through his lifetime was commissioned to create many sculptures of historical figures and events which can now be found throughout the United States. A Sculptor’s Testimony in Bronze and Stone states about Fairbanks’s work: “Each piece of his was created from the inside out, from skeleton to muscle system to the fine creases in skin. He put into each creation such a sense of concern, whether tragic or happy, that one can feel the significance of each event recorded.”
