Sunflowers

A drive or stroll down Cascade Avenue is sure to bring a smile, as one can’t help but encounter a grove of oversized steel sunflowers. Renowned public artist Christopher Weed created the stems out of stainless steel and the petals out of powder-coated steel. These flowers bring a touch of whimsy to the median, especially during the flower-less winters in Colorado.

Chris Weed, born in Philadelphia and educated at University of Maryland (Bachelor of Fine Arts), is known for his large-scale, brightly colored, whimsical steel structures. Of the many Chris Weed sculptures that have graced Colorado Springs’ streets, three have become part of the downtown permanent collection.

Funds to purchase Sunflowers were raised by friends and family of the late Dan Quigley, a well-known local attorney and community leader. The piece was donated through Community Ventures to the City of Colorado Springs.
