“Torch” was created by Ty Gillespie.
This mobile work of sculpture begs to be activated by the elements or the touch of a hand, balancing simple mechanisms on heavy durable shafts to create a sophisticated toy that directly engages the viewer.
Gillespie draws inspiration for Torch and other wind-powered artworks from his own exposure to the elements during a seven-year circumnavigation of the globe by sailboat.
“My intimate relation to the environment during these years heightened my respect for, and wonder at, the raw environmental forces that ultimately influence my kinetic pieces,” he says.
