Watermelon
Type: Outdoor Sculpture
This giant wedge of steel fruit graces the entrance to America the Beautiful Park in downtown Colorado Springs. Steel rivets create the illusion of seeds in this former 2000 Art on the Streets program winner. It was purchased in 2001 for the city by Community Ventures.
Chris Weed, born in Philadelphia and educated at University of Maryland (Bachelor of Fine Arts), is known for his large-scale, brightly colored, whimsical steel structures. Of the many Chris Weed sculptures that have graced Colorado Springs’ streets, three have become part of the downtown permanent collection.
