'F.E.A.R.S'

Presented by UCCS Galleries of Contemporary Art and UCCS Visual and Performing Arts: Visual Art Program at GOCA 121

Oct 06 - Dec 04, 2020

The F.E.A.R.S exhibit is currently featuring artist Danielle Rae Miller. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and her MFA from the University of New Mexico. Her artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally in both solo and group exhibitions, and is included in public and private collections, including the State of New Mexico’s Art in Public Places Program, The City of Albuquerque’s 1% for the Arts Public Art Collection, and the Arjo Wiggins Paper Corporation. Miller teaches at CNM Community College and the Institute of American Indian Arts. Danielle Rae Miller’s works are dense compositions of plant, animal, and insect life realistically drawn with fine line ink on both sides of translucent vellum to create transparency, depth, and interaction between elements. Miller uses images with pre-attached meanings in our human mythologies—snakes, bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, beetles, roses, sunflowers, the human heart, ribcage, Daand pelvis—to engage an…

'Rebecca Belmore: Facing the Monumental'

Presented by Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College

Feb 21 - Dec 05, 2020

Facing the Monumental is the largest survey of Rebecca Belmore’s work ever presented; the touring version presented by the FAC features 14 major works including photography, sculpture, and multi-media installations from the past three decades. A member of Lac Seul First Nation (Anishinaabe), Belmore has given voice in her work to social and political issues for over 30 years. She employs a visual language that is both poetic and provocative to contend with subjects such as water and land rights, women’s lives and dignity, and state violence against Indigenous people. Belmore has created performance art since the late 1980's, and its immediacy infuses her diverse creative practice. The exhibition’s title comes from a performance staged in Toronto’s Queen’s Park on Canada Day in 2012, where she transformed an oak tree surrounded by monuments to colonialism into a temporary “non-monument” to the Earth. The exhibition is organized by the Art Gallery…

'Nancy Lovendahl: Small Glimpses, Many Times'

Presented by Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College

Mar 14, 2020 - Apr 24, 2021

The exhibition title references meditative, repetitive practices found in Buddhist philosophy. In this new body of work, Nancy Lovendahl uses repetition and scale to invite viewers to examine their own perception of the world around them. She has constructed the form of a mountain (Garett Peak, near her home studio) from memory, repeating the form in two and three dimensions and various media, including cast resin and Tyvek. Through the process of iteration and repetition, she aims to offer new ways of seeing and understanding. Lovendahl hopes that this work will prompt viewers to examine their own perception and assumptions, making space for unity and connection. For over thirty years, she has investigated the human relationship with landscape, drawing inspiration from the mountainous panorama that surrounds her home and studio in Old Snowmass, CO.
