Feb 11 - Jul 02, 2022

A leading member of the new Afro-Cuban cultural movement, visual artist Juan Roberto Diago (b. 1971) has produced a body of work that offers a revisionist history of the Cuban nation. His “history,” a term that he frequently inserts in his works using the visual language of graffiti, is not the official narrative of a racially harmonious nation, built thanks to the selfless efforts of generous white patriots. Diago’s Cuba is a nation built on pain, rape, greed, and the enslavement of millions of displaced Africans, a nation still grappling with the long-term effects of slavery and colonialism. To him, slavery is not the past, but a daily experience of racism and discrimination. Africa is not a root, but a wellspring of cultural renovation and personal affirmation, the ancestors that sustain him in his journey. Diago: The Pasts of this Afro-Cuban Present is the first retrospective exhibition of this prominent Cuban artist,…

Jul 08, 2022

Five-time Grammy-winner Mary Chapin Carpenter’s 15th studio album, The Dirt And The Stars, finds the singer-songwriter pondering life’s intimate, personal moments and exploring its most universally challenging questions at an unprecedented time. Written at her rural Virginia farmhouse before stay-at-home orders became the “new normal,” the songs celebrate invaluable experiences and irreplaceable wisdom, while also advocating exploration of the best in all of us. As one of just 15 women voted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, with over 15 million albums sold, 5 Grammy awards (from 15 nominations) and the recipient of two CMA and ACM awards, Carpenter’s now-classic hits include “I Feel Lucky,” “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her” and “The Hard Way.” Produced by Ethan Johns (Ray LaMontagne, Paul McCartney, Kings of Leon) and recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Bath, in southwest England, The Dirt And The Stars marks Carpenter’s first collection of all-new material since 2016’s The…

'Hearts and Minds'

Presented by Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College

May 06 - Jul 09, 2022

Completed in 1995 and acquired by the Fine Arts Center in 2020, Floyd D. Tunson’s Hearts and Minds addresses the ongoing impact of gun violence on youth of color. In Colorado, Black men ages 18–24 are more than 12 times more likely than white men the same age to be killed in a gun homicide (The State of Gun Violence). The work asks us to consider the systems and structures that perpetuate these cycles of violence and the tragic loss that results. Endangered, the multi-disciplinary performance-based project presented alongside Hearts and Minds in the exhibition is a poetic and musical response to the artwork in Floyd D. Tunson’s Endangered series addressing the endangered status of Black men. Featuring the music of artist Tomás Doncker, the lyrics of Pulitzer Prize winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa, and the videography of William Murray, Endangered will run in video form in the galleries through the duration of the exhibition with…

‘Deep in Land’ presented by GOCA (Gallery of Contemporary Art) at Ent Center for the Arts, Colorado Springs CO

'Deep in Land'

Presented by GOCA (Gallery of Contemporary Art) and Ent Center for the Arts at Ent Center for the Arts

May 05 - Jul 14, 2022

Deep in Land is inspired by the deserts of the American Southwest. The artworks emanate from Jo Bertini’s many decades of research and field work into the unique and fragile beauty of remote desert landscapes and the peoples and cultures that have flourished there. The exhibition explores the extraordinary intrinsic value, interconnectedness and essential nature of desert landscapes through a particularly female perspective, distinct from the established historical archive of desert understanding. For the artist, these desert places simultaneously invoke a sense of the vastness of space and a personal intimacy while retaining a fierce, unexpected wildness. These seemingly harsh and inhospitable environments inspire in Bertini a primary instinct to create. Artworks become a type of elegy, a memorial, extending the traditions of landscape painting and oral storytelling. Trees can talk - mountains can move - rivers hold secrets - grains of sand weave myth, knowledge and culture from past…

'Reframing Birds of America: Conversations on Audubon'

Presented by Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College

Apr 08 - Jul 30, 2022

From 1827-1838 John James Audubon published Birds of America, which is generally considered to be among the finest examples of prints illustrating avian life in America. This exhibition Reframing Birds of America: Conversations on Audubon explores these historic prints with a contemporary lens. The FAC show, curated by Colorado College students, fosters appreciation of the prints while highlighting other voices in conversation with Audubon’s work. Reframing Birds of America: Conversations on Audubon comes from the Fine Arts Center’s collection of several hundred Audubon prints and includes rarely seen examples. The selection of prints on display not only bear witness to the natural beauty of America’s birds, but also offer rich opportunities to reflect on current debates and issues around Audubon and his Birds of America. The exhibition explores the problematic context in which the prints were created, including questions of ecology, gender roles, naturalists’ practices, and colonial history. Interrogating Audubon’s legacy allows for a better understanding…

Robert Blackburn (1920-2003) was a key artist in the development of printmaking in the twentieth century. His innovative, masterful expertise with the medium helped define the overall aesthetic of the American “graphics boom.” This new exhibition examines Blackburn’s life and work, which touched the Harlem Renaissance and the WPA; the Art Students League and the New York School; Paris in the 1950's; the venerable print workshop Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) and the graphic explosion of the 1960s. Blackburn forecasted and participated in the proliferation of collaborative, non-profit workspaces in the early 1970s, the rise of multiculturalism, and, ultimately, globalism. The exhibition includes 70 framed original prints by Robert Blackburn and artists with whom he collaborated, including Robert Rauschenberg, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Grace Hartigan, and Will Barnet. The central video of ^^(Resource) follows the journey of a yellow stone taken from Dook’o’osliid, later named the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona, a location that is sacred to the Diné people. The stone moves from a lab to a shop, and finally to a ritual ceremony. These contexts—scientific, aesthetic, consumerist, and spiritual—contribute to the stone’s changing meaning and significance. Yellow is the is the color the Diné associate with the mountain and the cardinal direction west. While the experiences with the stone change based on the people who interact with it, the imagery of the mountain range reminds us of where this resource came from and has since been extracted and removed.

'Where the Saint Lives'

Presented by Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College

Jun 03 - Sep 18, 2022

Where the Saint Lives examines works produced in the Southwestern United States and Mexico spanning from the 1800's to the early 2000's that make visible the link between cultural identity and spirituality. The exhibition takes its title from the combined Nahuatl and Spanish word santocalli, which translates to “the saint’s house,” a historical structure found throughout the region used for cross-cultural religious practices. These spaces were home to santos – images of saints that were considered to not just be objects, but beings that were alive–and were sites for both Indigenous and Christian altars, rituals, and prayers. Using the concept of “home” as a framework, Where the Saint Lives investigates Southwestern identity through the imagery of Nuestra Señora, or Our Lady – the mother of Jesus Christ who has many titles including Our Lady of Guadalupe, who, through her imagery and story, can additionally be interpreted as Tonantzin Coatlaxopeuh, a Nahua…
