'Sedimentary'
'Sedimentary' Presented by Surface Gallery at Surface Gallery Feb 03 - Feb 25, 2023 Bri McGrew is a well known favorite jewelry maker in Colorado Springs, who currently resides in Pueblo, CO. She is forever an artist in both her jewelry craft and sculptural work. “Sedimentary is an exploration of traditional materials progressing from my work as a jeweler. With sustainability as a core value of my studio practice, I source dead stock vintage chain, and rocks directly from miners and old collections, always attempting to make use of every scrap. Much of this work was built utilizing the remnants and inventory deemed unsuitable for use in jewelry. My process is often intuitive, beginning with a loose composition in mind. I find that most projects require flexibility, allowing for each material, color and shape to dictate the form taken as they meet. The Latin, “genius loci,” translates to, “the pervading spirit of a place.” This is perceived as the distinct way elements combine in any particular natural environment. The… |

'I think I liked it better when I knew everything'
'I think I liked it better when I knew everything' Presented by G44 Gallery at G44 Gallery Feb 04 - Feb 25, 2023 I’ve been working on exploring my own history as an artist, looking at what I make now and how it relates to my past work. I’m mostly curious about what was left behind. Born in Denver in 1972, Michael Dowling spent much of his early life as a typical kid apart from being an obsessive drawer. It wasn’t until the age of 25, and after several years studying various subjects as well as working in many fields, that Michael started painting. With that late beginning, Dowling dove full in and began studying extensively. At 28, he decided to sell a burgeoning art sales company and moved to Florence, Italy to focus on painting. He has since returned to his native Denver where he lives and works and tries to raise three naughty kids. Michael is represented in Colorado by Leongallery, Colorado by G44, Colorado by BRDG project, Chicago by Studio… |

'The abyss came to me in a dream-and said nothing'
'The abyss came to me in a dream-and said nothing' Presented by G44 Gallery at G44 Gallery Feb 04 - Feb 25, 2023 As Nietzsche (1886) notably writes, “if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.” This installation is an invitation to step into the abyss, into absence, into the ruins and remnants of what remains when everything else is asked to leave the room for a bit. You see, my heart broke open awhile ago — and a great and vast nothing spilled out, only silence, reverberations of a quiet despair, empty walls, and only a hollowness left to say — I have never been more afraid. I wanted (could do no other) than stand before you, stripped of jargon, of anything other than silence and emptiness and abyss and absence. I used what little I could, I used only what remained, the only tangible thing left: the body, if it could even be called such a thing. Is the body a presence or an absence?… |

'Positive/Negative' & 'Venerable Stones' Presented by Bridge Gallery at Bridge Gallery Feb 03 - Feb 25, 2023 In The Bridge Gallery: Positive space and negative space are basic concepts of making art. It’s playing with spaces that appear open or closed and how they affect design. One does not exist without the other. “Positive/Negative” is a show with the focus on these two elements. Invited artists included are Chris Alvarez, Betty Atherton, Deena Bennett, Jana Bussanich, Michael Cellan, Ruth Chandler, Julian Gallop, Christine Lawson, John Lawson, Marc Shereck, Darla Slee, Jeanne Steiner, Robin Wolfe. In The Commons Gallery: When you see images of ancient times, often you see mosaics because they stand the "test of time". Paint and paper fade, but stone survives. These Roman and Byzantine mosaics also give us a peek into life and leaders of the time Artist Pam Farris discovered a love for mosaics 10 years ago. Over the years her mosaics have diverged into two categories: historical and conceptual. The historical mosaics she creates range… |
