Presented by Stargazers Theatre & Event Center at Stargazers Theatre & Event Center

Jun 02, 2022

Colorado-based singer-songwriter Edie Carey is known for her unmistakable, soulful voice, her intelligent, heart-grabbing songs, but perhaps most especially for her warm, engaging presence on – and off – stage. As much a part of her show as the music itself, Carey’s wry and often self-mocking humor makes audiences feel as though they have just spent an evening with a very close friend. Carey has been singing at festivals, colleges, and listening rooms across the US, Canada and Europe since 1999, performing alongside Sara Bareilles, Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, and Shawn Colvin. Her co-writes have been recorded by Shawn Mullins and Chely Wright. She’s also been a featured artist on PRI’s Mountain Stage. She’s appeared at the country’s most prestigious folk festivals including Telluride Bluegrass, Rocky Mountain Folks, Newport Folk, 30A Songwriters, and Cayamo. Her duo lullabies project with Sarah Sample garnered several children’s music awards, including Best Children’s Album in the 2015 Independent Music Awards, and she was a featured vocalist on Joanie Leeds’ Grammy-Winning Ensemble Album “All…

'The Many Dimensions of Greg Ragland'

Presented by Broadmoor Galleries at Broadmoor Galleries - Traditional Gallery

Jun 02, 2022

Originally from Colorado Springs, Greg studied architecture at Arizona State University, received his BFA from Art Center College of Design and his MFA from the University of Utah. After spending six years in Los Angeles and seven years in New York City, Greg moved to Park City, Utah, and then settled in southern Utah. Greg’s Color Field paintings are freeze frame glimpses of nature’s creatures in abstracted color compositions. He experiences nature by watching the flight of birds moving through the sky, listening to leaves moved by the wind and the songs of birds. With time spent outdoors watching the clouds and listening to the wind, it is nature that has fueled a never ending passion of color and movement. “I experience nature by watching the flight of birds moving through the sky, listen to leaves moved by the wind and the songs of birds.” - Greg Ragland

Meet Patrick, watch him create, and choose from his newest original paintings. Artist Statement: The mountains are full of unexpected delights. Slivers of light across wide stone faces. Deep moss clinging to the edges of cold, winding waters. Wildflowers, both delicate and resilient, thriving above lonely treelines. Songbirds echoing among towering pines and fragrant junipers. It’s hard to encapsulate just how inspiring these terrains are. I’ve delighted in exploring these mountains for much of the last decade. My paintings are the result of some attempt to capture my relentless, wandering observations; they are the embodiment of a constant interest and profound fascination in the impressions nature leaves me with- ornaments of that remarkable topography both vast and diminutive. These paintings are deeply inspired by the mountain West, though often not tethered to an exact set of coordinates or geologic formation. They serve as vibrant, sometimes whimsical, approximations of the mountains-…

Jun 04, 2022

The Manitou Springs Heritage Center and Museum welcomes historian and author Eric Swab for a talk and presentation about his new book, 'The Granite Attraction, Stories of the Pikes Peak Highway and Summit.' Since 1873, the summit of Pikes Peak has served as a U. S. Army weather station, an attraction for visitors, innkeepers, skiers, hunters, and fishermen. Individuals and corporations have been motivated by the challenge of the mountain’s highway to get their horseless carriages, automobiles, race cars, motorcycles, bicycles, trains, basketballs, wheelbarrows, peanuts, and pianos to the top of the mountain. The summit has also been the site of experiments in meteorology, aircraft engine design, and human physiology. Over the years, five structures have been built for this purpose. There have been several struggles for control including an attempt to homestead the summit. It has been the source of tall tales, stories of hardship, and of failure.

Military Band-Aid Softball Tournament

Presented by Helping Heroes at Sky View Sports Complex

Jun 01 - Jun 05, 2022

The Military Band-Aid Softball Tournament is the second largest military softball tournament in the world, and is hosted in the beautiful city of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Being ranked as one of the top three military towns as well as being centrally located within the continental United States, it is just a natural fit for the tournament to continuously be hosted within the city. The tournament was created specifically for medical personnel within the various military branches and was very successful and continuously grew year after year. In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s participation in the tournament had begun to decrease due to increased deployments of military personnel and the decrease in participation led to the invitation of first responders in 2003 which incorporated security forces and firefighters. In 2007 the tournament was finally opened to all military varsity teams, and was the turning point of the tournament. Sponsorship Opportunities:…

Millionaire mine owner Winfield Scott Stratton was a mass of contradictions, and controversy seemed to follow him around. This was no better displayed as when he sold his famous Independence mine above Victor, Colorado to the Venture Corporation of London for $10 million. The Denver Post called the sale "a bunco game," and the Mining Reporter said it was "a most beautiful scheme to milk the English public." But highly-regarded Colorado state geologist Thomas A. Rickard calculated ore reserves, and insisted that there was plenty of gold remaining in the Independence to pay the sales price and still make a profit. Rickard had the backing of the influential Engineering and Mining Journal out of New York City. Join the Cripple Creek District Museum’s Visits With History on June 5th to find out who won and who lost in the sale of one of the best mines in the Cripple Creek…

This body of work conceptualizes boundaries that have come and gone in the course of my own lifetime. The artwork in this exhibition, 'Lines and Divides' conceptualizes boundaries that have come and gone in the course of my own lifetime. I see lines and divides all around me in this country that is called “United.” Is this journey, this life, a straight line, a spin around the sun, or an orbit in space?  Does the line drawn show a journey, a path taken, or is it a symbol that separates and divides? Is a shape made with paint a divide between spaces, or is it a seam that connects diversity, joined to cooperate? The answers are dependent on one's personal history. This work seeks to open my own personal history, perspective, and expectations. To share a belief that the survival of humanity and our earth depends on our individual willingness…

Moments tied together by visual interpretations of my life. I’ve been creating art my whole life. I’ve also always been a lover of nature and the great outdoors since I can remember. The artwork I create, whether it is the materials or the subject matter itself, will almost always have a connection to nature. Encaustic is made from beeswax and tree resin, which somehow naturally seems to have the most incredible soothing effect. Watercolors create ethereal lands, usually complemented by the use of gold or copper leafing. My cold wax & oil paintings usually depict an abstracted landscape with subtle earth tones, contrasted by small bits of breaking light. I have taken many different paths with artwork, but the sure constant is that inspiration is always available if you step outside. I have two amazing children and a husband who also share my love of the outdoors. We emphasize the…

The inspiration behind these works comes from Making marks; one of my favorite things about being an artist. This award winning artist paints horses against the backdrop of her scenic home state of Colorado. When her kids were younger she photographed them and their fellow contestants competing in rodeo. She painted them on their horses displaying the partnership between horse and rider, reminiscent of the Old West. Tammy enjoys paint-ing horses competing at their finest, while her current focus is paint-ing wild horses in their natural environment and capturing their nat-ural, graceful beauty, the detail of their muscle, and their swishing tails. She enjoys continuing to learn from these beautiful animals and also provides classes to students. The artist is currently working in watercolor and oil. 'The Art of Harvey Otis Young' features 16 paintings from the museum’s art collection. Young, born in New Hampshire in 1840, was a largely self-taught artist who started painting landscape scenes in California in the 1860s after unsuccessfully searching for gold. Young was a keen observer of current painting styles and adapted them in his own work, which was also influenced by his travels to Europe. Young moved to Manitou Springs in 1879 and resided there for a few years, then moved to Denver, and finally to Colorado Springs in 1899. He died in 1901 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery. The paintings in this exhibit were executed by Young between the late 1870s and 1901 and reflect his maturing skills. The exhibit will remain open until the close of business on Saturday, June 25, in the museum’s changing exhibits gallery. Admission to the Special Temporary Exhibit is included in…

Left quad. Right quad. Lunge. A girls indoor soccer team warms up. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals. Finalist! 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama Winner! 2015 Relentless Award for Playwriting “The scary, exhilarating brightness of raw adolescence emanates from every scene of this uncannily assured first play by Sarah DeLappe.” —The New York Times Content Advisory: The Wolves contains strong language, discussion of sex, and adult themes.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2023 Gallery Schedule

Presented by Commonwheel Artists Co-op at Commonwheel Artists Co-op

May 15 - Jun 30, 2022

Commonwheel Artists Co-op is currently accepting applications for individuals or groups of artists for Gallery Shows in 2023. Applications are available in our store at 102 Cañon Ave., Manitou Springs, CO and at commonwheel.com/gallery-show-app.html. Application deadline is June 30, 2022. Commonwheel encourages and looks for new and unique work with our Visiting Artists shows. New work inspires you, the artist, to explore new areas of your medium, or other media. Often the outcome from this exploration transforms routine work and suggests new directions. We open this application process once a year to invite artists to propose concepts for gallery shows or to represent their own work in our gallery space. Submissions from this application process are considered as we put together our gallery show schedule for the coming calendar year.

Feb 11 - Jul 02, 2022

His “history,” a term that he frequently inserts in his works using the visual language of graffiti, is not the official narrative of a racially harmonious nation, built thanks to the selfless efforts of generous white patriots. Diago’s Cuba is a nation built on pain, rape, greed, and the enslavement of millions of displaced Africans, a nation still grappling with the long-term effects of slavery and colonialism. To him, slavery is not the past, but a daily experience of racism and discrimination. Africa is not a root, but a wellspring of cultural renovation and personal affirmation, the ancestors that sustain him in his journey. Diago: The Pasts of this Afro-Cuban Present is the first retrospective exhibition of this prominent Cuban artist,…

Completed in 1995 and acquired by the Fine Arts Center in 2020, Floyd D. Tunson’s Hearts and Minds addresses the ongoing impact of gun violence on youth of color. In Colorado, Black men ages 18–24 are more than 12 times more likely than white men the same age to be killed in a gun homicide (The State of Gun Violence). The work asks us to consider the systems and structures that perpetuate these cycles of violence and the tragic loss that results. Endangered, the multi-disciplinary performance-based project presented alongside Hearts and Minds in the exhibition is a poetic and musical response to the artwork in Floyd D. Tunson’s Endangered series addressing the endangered status of Black men. Featuring the music of artist Tomás Doncker, the lyrics of Pulitzer Prize winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa, and the videography of William Murray, Endangered will run in video form in the galleries through the duration of the exhibition with…
