Tara Kelley-Cruz Bio: Colorado Springs-based mixed media painter, Tara Kelley-Cruz, has been refining her painting process for several years. With Fine-Arts background, (Tara has a BFA degree, specializing in Printmaking), she became a Graphic Designer and has worked for 26 years with many high-profile companies. In recent years, Kelley-Cruz has realized her lifelong dream of dedicating much of her time to her art making practice, in which she combines the best parts of printmaking, graphic design and the experimental nature of painting. Kelley-Cruz enjoys travel, old movies and visits to art museums and galleries with her husband and two sons. Artist Statement: Ancient seafarers used the stars to chart their course. In today’s culture, we look to different sources for direction: social platforms, the media, peers and family. Sometimes these sources guide us, but at times we still look to the heavens for inspiration. My paintings are about the things…

'Contradictions'

Presented by G44 Gallery at G44 Gallery

Jul 01 - Jul 29, 2022

Bio: Jes Moran creates saturated and vivid abstract paintings by pouring, staining and brushing multiple layers of thinned acrylic pigments onto lightly gessoed canvas. Her work emphasizes the push and pull of contradictory environments. Her techniques and aesthetics are influenced by her studies in photography, fashion and design. She attended Metropolitan State University Denver for Fine Art and the Art Institute of Portland, Oregon for Apparel Design. Her work has been shown along the Front Range of Colorado. Artist Statement: 'Contradictions' is a reflection on the paradox of the natural and artificial worlds. Nature is simple, soft spoken, minimalistic; the artificial world is complex, shimmering and electric. These environments often have irreconcilable differences, and I am torn between my desire for both. I use a color palette that is a combination of both natural and bright pigments, inspired by things such as earth elements, urban lights, fashion and landscape photography,…

'Still Alive'

Presented by Kreuser Gallery at Kreuser Gallery

Jul 01 - Jul 29, 2022

Enjoy 'Still Alive,' featurinh new works by Nethery Wylie! Artist Statement: I make lush oil paintings of the rot and decay in my compost bin to highlight the transformation of “dead” plant matter into sustenance for new life. The pieces of kitchen discards and garden waste overlap and intermingle, and their forms slowly merge into rich darkness. After working with many other media, I return with this series to the subject, the natural world, and the materials, intense transparent pigments, that first lured me into painting. The history of still life as an art genre is rife with the theme of death. Webster’s Dictionary defines “still life” as “a picture consisting predominantly of inanimate objects.” Medieval and Renaissance traditions often used skulls to invoke the idea of death and the transience of earthly life. The phrase for still life in Italian is “natura morte” or dead nature. In these paintings,…

Presented by Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College

Apr 08 - Jul 30, 2022

From 1827-1838 John James Audubon published Birds of America, which is generally considered to be among the finest examples of prints illustrating avian life in America. This exhibition Reframing Birds of America: Conversations on Audubon explores these historic prints with a contemporary lens. The FAC show, curated by Colorado College students, fosters appreciation of the prints while highlighting other voices in conversation with Audubon’s work. Reframing Birds of America: Conversations on Audubon comes from the Fine Arts Center’s collection of several hundred Audubon prints and includes rarely seen examples. The selection of prints on display not only bear witness to the natural beauty of America’s birds, but also offer rich opportunities to reflect on current debates and issues around Audubon and his Birds of America. The exhibition explores the problematic context in which the prints were created, including questions of ecology, gender roles, naturalists’ practices, and colonial history. Interrogating Audubon’s legacy allows for a better understanding…

'TWO STORIES: construct to deconstruct'

Presented by Kreuser Gallery at Kreuser Gallery

Jul 01 - Jul 30, 2022

The term “to construct to deconstruct” is intended to move away from “true” forms but rather argue the concepts such as truth and justice. A French philosopher, Jacques Derrida, states that there is not one intrinsic meaning in work, but rather many, and often these can be conflicting. This exhibition’s approach on construct to deconstruct involves discovering, recognizing and understand the underlying of unspoken and implicit assumptions, ideas and framework of cultural forms.

Robert Blackburn (1920-2003) was a key artist in the development of printmaking in the twentieth century. His innovative, masterful expertise with the medium helped define the overall aesthetic of the American “graphics boom.” This new exhibition examines Blackburn’s life and work, which touched the Harlem Renaissance and the WPA; the Art Students League and the New York School; Paris in the 1950's; the venerable print workshop Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) and the graphic explosion of the 1960s. Blackburn forecasted and participated in the proliferation of collaborative, non-profit workspaces in the early 1970s, the rise of multiculturalism, and, ultimately, globalism. The exhibition includes 70 framed original prints by Robert Blackburn and artists with whom he collaborated, including Robert Rauschenberg, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Grace Hartigan, and Will Barnet. Robert Blackburn & Modern American Printmaking is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and curated by Deborah Cullen, in cooperation with…

The central video of ^^(Resource) follows the journey of a yellow stone taken from Dook’o’osliid, later named the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona, a location that is sacred to the Diné people. The stone moves from a lab to a shop, and finally to a ritual ceremony. These contexts—scientific, aesthetic, consumerist, and spiritual—contribute to the stone’s changing meaning and significance. Yellow is the is the color the Diné associate with the mountain and the cardinal direction west. While the experiences with the stone change based on the people who interact with it, the imagery of the mountain range reminds us of where this resource came from and has since been extracted and removed.

May 10 - Aug 31, 2022

Are you a butcher, a baker, or a candlestick maker? Or maybe a sculptor, a carver, or a painter? The Makers’ Market is currently seeking 15-30 cottage industry creators who would like a place to sell their wares as part of an indoor “pop-up” style "farmers’ market” with outdoor seating and optional summer sales space. To begin, the market will be held on Saturday and Sunday. As a Maker, you would join the collective to make decisions about the group, but you would be completely in charge of your cottage industry business. Spaces for the market would be secured during our monthly meetings which are in person but could be accessed by phone or zoom if needed. The projected opening date is September. The shop will be located at 2919 W. Colorado Avenue, next to the Mason Jar and the new ENT Credit Union.

Jun 03 - Sep 18, 2022

Where the Saint Lives examines works produced in the Southwestern United States and Mexico spanning from the 1800's to the early 2000's that make visible the link between cultural identity and spirituality. The exhibition takes its title from the combined Nahuatl and Spanish word santocalli, which translates to “the saint’s house,” a historical structure found throughout the region used for cross-cultural religious practices. These spaces were home to santos – images of saints that were considered to not just be objects, but beings that were alive–and were sites for both Indigenous and Christian altars, rituals, and prayers. Using the concept of “home” as a framework, Where the Saint Lives investigates Southwestern identity through the imagery of Nuestra Señora, or Our Lady – the mother of Jesus Christ who has many titles including Our Lady of Guadalupe, who, through her imagery and story, can additionally be interpreted as Tonantzin Coatlaxopeuh, a Nahua…

Oddly, three individuals have managed the nutty task of pushing a peanut up the dangerously steep slopes of Pikes Peak to its omnipresent summit. The first, Bill Williams, had lost a bizarre bet that knew no bounds and subsequently performed the feat on May 20 through June 9, 1929. Perhaps, the most notorious Peanut Pusher was rockabilly music star, Ulysses Baxter, who performed The Peanut Push in a record breaking eight days. In 1963, Mr. Baxter’s fame was forever cemented through extensive news coverage in every major newspaper, an appearance on The Jack Paar Program and even an appearance on the American game show, I’ve Got a Secret.
