GOCA’s curatorial program has been heavily focused on independently-produced major exhibitions that take years to plan, typical for the museum world. This new series allows flexibility in the curatorial calendar, offering artists a platform, funding, and inviting guest writers to respond to the works and add to the critical dialogue across the community. GOCA’s mission is to spark engaged dialogue about contemporary culture and current issues and to make space for diverse perspectives. We commit to funding 100% of the artists and creatives we work with at GOCA. This series is curated by Daisy McGowan, UCCS GOCA Director, with a goal to invite guest curation in the future.

'PATRIMONIO:' Film Screening and Live Q&A

Presented by Rocky Mountain Women's Film at Ivywild School

May 21, 2022

On May 21 join us for the screening of PATRIMONIO (part of a two week schedule of programming honoring Filmmaker Lisa Jackson and her body of work both). For a full schedule visit rmwfilm.org/legacy. Made possible by the Lori Cohen Endowment, a RMWF Legacy fund. PATRIMONIO begins in 2015 as a mega development is poised to engulf a small Mexican community with a vast hotel/condo complex called Tres Santos. Marketed to wealthy Americans as “green” and “mindful” Tres Santos threatens to transform and overwhelm the idiosyncratic desert town of Todos Santos, quadrupling its population and causing irreversible damage: not only are the fishermen being forced off the beach they’re used for generations but the developers would also drain an already diminished aquifer, taking drinking water from a town where many residents have little or no access.

May 21 - May 22, 2022

The program includes Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony, Copland’s Appalachian Spring, and new voices – featuring Korean artist Ji Su Jung on marimba and a resounding conclusion to our comeback year with Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra’s Fandangos. Multiple GRAMMY-winning conductor JoAnn Falletta serves as Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Music Director Laureate of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the Brevard Music Center and Artistic Adviser of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra. She was recently named one of the “Fifty Great Conductors,” past and present, by Gramophone Magazine, and has been hailed for having ‘Toscanini’s tight control over ensemble, Walter’s affectionate balancing of inner voices, Stokowski’s gutsy showmanship, and a controlled frenzy worthy of Bernstein.” Upon her appointment as Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic, Falletta became the first woman to lead a major American ensemble.

'Diago: The Pasts of this Afro-Cuban Present'

Presented by Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College

Feb 11 - Jul 02, 2022

A leading member of the new Afro-Cuban cultural movement, visual artist Juan Roberto Diago (b. 1971) has produced a body of work that offers a revisionist history of the Cuban nation. His “history,” a term that he frequently inserts in his works using the visual language of graffiti, is not the official narrative of a racially harmonious nation, built thanks to the selfless efforts of generous white patriots. Diago’s Cuba is a nation built on pain, rape, greed, and the enslavement of millions of displaced Africans, a nation still grappling with the long-term effects of slavery and colonialism. To him, slavery is not the past, but a daily experience of racism and discrimination. Africa is not a root, but a wellspring of cultural renovation and personal affirmation, the ancestors that sustain him in his journey. Diago: The Pasts of this Afro-Cuban Present is the first retrospective exhibition of this prominent Cuban artist,…

'Hearts and Minds'

Presented by Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College

May 06 - Jul 09, 2022

Completed in 1995 and acquired by the Fine Arts Center in 2020, Floyd D. Tunson’s Hearts and Minds addresses the ongoing impact of gun violence on youth of color. In Colorado, Black men ages 18–24 are more than 12 times more likely than white men the same age to be killed in a gun homicide (The State of Gun Violence). The work asks us to consider the systems and structures that perpetuate these cycles of violence and the tragic loss that results. Endangered, the multi-disciplinary performance-based project presented alongside Hearts and Minds in the exhibition is a poetic and musical response to the artwork in Floyd D. Tunson’s Endangered series addressing the endangered status of Black men. Featuring the music of artist Tomás Doncker, the lyrics of Pulitzer Prize winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa, and the videography of William Murray, Endangered will run in video form in the galleries through the duration of the exhibition with…

'Deep in Land'
‘Deep in Land’ presented by GOCA (Gallery of Contemporary Art) at Ent Center for the Arts, Colorado Springs CO

'Deep in Land'

Presented by GOCA (Gallery of Contemporary Art) and Ent Center for the Arts at Ent Center for the Arts

May 05 - Jul 14, 2022

Deep in Land is inspired by the deserts of the American Southwest. The artworks emanate from Jo Bertini’s many decades of research and field work into the unique and fragile beauty of remote desert landscapes and the peoples and cultures that have flourished there. The exhibition explores the extraordinary intrinsic value, interconnectedness and essential nature of desert landscapes through a particularly female perspective, distinct from the established historical archive of desert understanding. For the artist, these desert places simultaneously invoke a sense of the vastness of space and a personal intimacy while retaining a fierce, unexpected wildness. These seemingly harsh and inhospitable environments inspire in Bertini a primary instinct to create. Artworks become a type of elegy, a memorial, extending the traditions of landscape painting and oral storytelling. Trees can talk - mountains can move - rivers hold secrets - grains of sand weave myth, knowledge and culture from past…

'Reframing Birds of America: Conversations on Audubon'

Presented by Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College

Apr 08 - Jul 30, 2022

From 1827-1838 John James Audubon published Birds of America, which is generally considered to be among the finest examples of prints illustrating avian life in America. This exhibition Reframing Birds of America: Conversations on Audubon explores these historic prints with a contemporary lens. The FAC show, curated by Colorado College students, fosters appreciation of the prints while highlighting other voices in conversation with Audubon’s work. Reframing Birds of America: Conversations on Audubon comes from the Fine Arts Center’s collection of several hundred Audubon prints and includes rarely seen examples. The selection of prints on display not only bear witness to the natural beauty of America’s birds, but also offer rich opportunities to reflect on current debates and issues around Audubon and his Birds of America. The exhibition explores the problematic context in which the prints were created, including questions of ecology, gender roles, naturalists’ practices, and colonial history. Interrogating Audubon’s legacy allows for a better understanding…

Presented by Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College at Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College

May 14 - Aug 07, 2022

Robert Blackburn (1920-2003) was a key artist in the development of printmaking in the twentieth century. His innovative, masterful expertise with the medium helped define the overall aesthetic of the American “graphics boom.” This new exhibition examines Blackburn’s life and work, which touched the Harlem Renaissance and the WPA; the Art Students League and the New York School; Paris in the 1950's; the venerable print workshop Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) and the graphic explosion of the 1960s. Blackburn forecasted and participated in the proliferation of collaborative, non-profit workspaces in the early 1970s, the rise of multiculturalism, and, ultimately, globalism. The exhibition includes 70 framed original prints by Robert Blackburn and artists with whom he collaborated, including Robert Rauschenberg, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Grace Hartigan, and Will Barnet. Robert Blackburn & Modern American Printmaking is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and curated by Deborah Cullen, in cooperation with…
