The sixth annual “Latina Voices” program will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Library 21C to showcase the talents of Colorado Latinas. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. with a social gathering, including refreshments, and the program starts at 10 a.m. It’s free.

This year’s presenters include:
María Vázquez has been dancing flamenco her entire life, and has been teaching and performing since 1994. She has studied with well-known modern Spanish dance artists and owns her own dance studio in Denver.

Deborah Espinosa was director of El Pueblo History Museum for 25 years. She’s a champion of Chicano(a) history and was an activist in the Chicano movement. She also produced and wrote the narration for an educational musical production, “Song of Pueblo” which has been performed for eight years.

Yolanda Avila has overcome blindness to become a dedicated community activist in Colorado Springs, serving on many civic boards and committees and even making a run at being elected to city council. She graduated from Colorado College in 1985 with a BA in international political economics.

Flor Lovato of Denver developed and taught the nation’s first Chicana Studies classes at the University of Colorado and other institutions of higher learning. She started writing poetry in the 1970s and has had a collection of her work published.
