Portuguese-Canadian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Anwa Teixeira has toured the world since 2001, mainly as co-leader of the indie-roots sensation, Po'Girl. Awna is now on tour supporting her 2012 solo release, "Where The Darkness Goes," as well as a new EP, "Thunderbird." Awna will also preview her forthcoming record, "Blue Heart on Your Sleeve," and will be accompanied by Jay Speed on guitar and banjo.
Although she handles the accordion, guitar, banjo, harmonica and ukulele with ease, it's Awna's songs that will bring you back to the classic feel of front porch spirituals, where tales of heartache and travel are laced with accordion-driven European folk.
"'Where The Darkness Goes' is the album that Nanci Griffith and Dolly Parton have both been trying to produce for several years." 5/5 No Depression/Maverick Magazine UK
"The first steps on becoming the undisputed Queen of Roots Music. Teixeira's voice is a delightfully gentle instrument; like the elfin sister of Emmylou Harris and Stevie Nicks." 4/5 Americana UK
"It's safe to say there is no one else quite like Awna, with her quirky take on roots music, blending hillbilly music with folk, and her Portugese roots." 5/5 American Roots UK
"Awna's music crosses barriers and draws from any number of sources and inspirations. Teixeira is joined by other musicians, but the vibrato in her voice is the key quality that makes her the focus of the album." Lonesome Highway UK
"There is a quirky beauty pervading this album, a beauty that haunts you gently for some time after the music has stopped." Flying Shoes UK
