Bernstein Harvard Lecture V: 'The Twentieth Century Crisis'
In a series of lectures filmed at Harvard University in 1973, legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein examines music from every age and place in the search for a worldwide, innate musical grammar, using analogies between music and linguistics.
The Twentieth Century marks a point where musical ambiguity becomes oversaturated, disrupting the balance between clarity and ambiguity which conveys meaning.
Bernstein explores some of the methods used by contemporary composers to restore this balance, demonstrating where they are successful. . . and where they are not.
