Bernstein Harvard Lecture VI: 'The Poetry of the Earth'
In a series of lectures filmed at Harvard University in 1973, legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein examines music from every age and place in the search for a worldwide, innate musical grammar, using analogies between music and linguistics.
In this final, culminating installment, Bernstein returns to his ideas of musical phonology (Harvard lecture 1) to advocate for tonality as the bedrock of musical expression and invention.
He demonstrates new avenues of exploration in the music of Stravinsky, a noted neoclassicist, presenting his work as "the poetry of the earth" (a quote from John Keats).
