Why are Chinese merchants selling lingerie in Upper Egypt? This was the question that struck Peter Hessler when, during a research trip to remote cities on the Nile, he stumbled upon a number of Chinese who had somehow found this unexpected niche in the Egyptian economy. The longtime staff writer for the New Yorker magazine set about investigating the experiences and impressions of these migrants, whose stories illustrate China’s growing impact on countries all across the African continent.
