Civil War Battle of New Market

The Palmer Lake Historical Society invites the public to a presentation on the Civil War battle at New Market, Virginia. Participants in the battle included cadets from the nearby Virginia Military Institute (VMI). A landmark from this battle is the "Field of Lost Shoes," which was named for the shoes lost by VMI cadets in the muddy field during the battle. The Confederate victory pushed the Union Army from the Shenandoah Valley and allowed the local crops to be harvested for Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Light refreshments will be served.
