War dogs have fought beside their human companions for millennia. Ancient Egypt, the Greek city states, and Rome have records of their dogs accomplishments in battle. Alexander the Great named a city after his dog, and Napoleon described a touching battlefield death scene between a poodle and its human. Today, Military Working Dogs (MWD) and Contract Working Dogs (CWD)- collectively called war dogs-are trained to perform more sophisticated duties beyond fighting and standing sentry. They find explosives, drugs, and enemy combatants, saving thousands of soldiers lives.
