The Craft: Swain’s Creating Characters: Ch 10: The Role of Roles

Enjoy a class on writing! This class is based on the book Swain’s Creating Characters. Participants are asked to bring the book to class and read chapter 9 and 10 beforehand.
The first 15-20 minutes of the class will cover Wild Cards, or “what goes into building an offbeat character.” Then the rest of the class will cover chapter 10: The Role of Roles: How Do You Treat a Hero?

Writers always want to create the perfect hero, one that’s enjoyable to write and memorable to fans forever! However, writers sometimes forget that they are writing stories, works of fiction, all of which must encompass much more than heroes. Writers can also forget that a hero can be completely different than what people are used to seeing.

A hero can be many things, but in all their varieties, writers must shape them to advance the story, to “fit the job he or she has to do.”  But how do you do that while retaining everything you have worked so hard to achieve? The answer might surprise you.

Investigate Swain’s approach to heroes, an eclectic collection of attributes that can apply to any member of our cast.

After the class, there will be a critique from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Tre Critique is  three-member team approach to more dynamic and informative critiques of work. By both giving and receiving two critiques each week, the quality of your writing will improve at a rapid pace and reach high quality in the shortest possible time. Variations resulting from uneven groups include two and four members in a critique group.
