Cottonwood is pleased to announce a juried show for March, composed of artists of all mediums, coming from within Cottonwood and from across the region. These artists have brought their best depictions of visual art in the brand of abstraction.

Many abstract artists find inspiration in objects found in the natural world. Flora, fauna, architecture, landscapes, and even portraiture can serve as the foundation for texture, color palette, and basic structure for an abstract composition.

Abstraction can also be based around geometric shapes or gestural marks, which have no source at all in an external visual reality. One of the many delights of an abstract piece is the freedom with which an artist elects to deconstruct their subject, and rearrange its elements to suit their creative interpretation of its nature.

Some artists practicing ‘pure’ abstraction have preferred terms such as “concrete art” or “non-objective art” but in practice the word abstract is used across the board. In many ways, abstract art is often seen as carrying a moral dimension, in that it exemplifies virtues such as order, purity, simplicity, and spirituality. Since the early 1900’s, abstract art has formed a central stream of modern art.
